How 'bout them Reds! (1 Viewer)

Also want to add, that it seems like a lot of people are over looking the Reds to win in the playoffs. Hope they prove the doubters wrong.

Nice win in game 1. Glad to see the bats show some life. Latos/bullpen were great in a challenging situation.

Hopefully Arroyo can keep them in the park and the Reds' bring their bats tonight.

What a gem Arroyo pitched last night. I had my doubts, but he pitched his best game of his career. If our offense hits like they hit last night, we are going to be really hard to beat. Every starting position player had at least 1 hit last night. Great all-around win. Hopefully we are able to sweep them tomorrow in Cincy.

Saw some commentary that Arroyo fit well in a fast-slow-fast pattern of starters. Of course that was assuming more than 1/3 of an inning for Cueto, but the pitchers the used in relief fit that bill as well.

Great game from Arroyo. He's looked good in several late season starts, so not a total surprise, but great to see under postseason pressure.

Gotta hope Cueto's back comes around, and they can end this in 3 or 4 to set him up for the NLCS. Latos could come back to start a game 5 if needed?

And I questioned it. No more. Dusty is a genius.

Whatever happens, you'd have to think they'll add Leake to the 25 man for the NLCS as insurance so they'll have to dump someone, right?

In other Reds news, I saw where Billy Hamilton is being converted to CF, since the 2B/SS pipeline is full ahead of him with BP, Cozart, and Gregorius. Could we be nearing the end of the cool breeze we all get from Drew Stubbs flailing his bat around?

I'm hoping Stubbs is gone and Heisey keeps CF warm for +/- 1 year until Hamilton is called up.Why?Because #### Drew Stubbs, that's why.

I would think so. And, I like Leake as a guy in emergency situations. Say what you want about Leake, but he certainly doesn't lack confidence.

Man, rough hop on Rolen there... no way else to play that ball.

Also, I like moving Hamilton to CF. Stubbs is simply horrible at the plate.
Passed ball earlier in the inning really cost them. Both runs given away cheap tonight. So who's on the bump tomorrow?
That's the rub right now. If they bring in Leake, then someone has to leave the playoff roster. This is not only for the remainder of this series but also the NLCS should the Reds advance. If Cueto can't go then better swap him for Leake now. It would be great if Latos could go and defer that decision. Come on Latos, save us from losing Cueto before we know if he can pitch in a few more days. If Cueto stays then we're looking at (P) Simon or IF/OF Valdez as the swap player for Leake, IMO.

Cueto's got an oblique injury, not back spasms. Apparently, Homer accidentally said that Leake is going tomorrow. Still an outside possibility they go Latos/Arroyo for games 4 and 5. With that said, Latos all has the flu, but was in the dugout today so it's not that severe. Guessing there could be an outside shot of Leake pitching tomorrow, and them sending Simon to the DL, but think there needs to be an actual reason for it. Can't do position player for pitcher either.

I think if Leake goes cueto is headed to the DL. This is officially a series now with him out. I would probably try latos/ leake in that order and you may not need roster move. I dont think arroyo on short rest at gabp vs Cain is going to happen.

Leake in game 4, Cueto off the roster. Frazier playing 3B for Rolen and Navarro in for Hannigan today. I dont want this going 5.

Why are you guys that concerned? They only need to win one out of the three games they had at home. They weren't swept at home, at all, this entire season. Leake pitched really well against them in SF. I'm very confident they win one of the next two. Only reason I dont want them to go to game 5 is so we have a fresh Latos ready in game one.

Leake has had his moments and the Reds are the better team so it would not surprise me in the least to see it end in game 4. Frazier may even spark that offense.

Just not that excited about not having Cueto for NLCS. I'm still confident we'll beat the Giants.

While he doesn't lack confidence, I'd argue he does lack MLB level talent.

Hamilton will be fun to watch but I think he'll have contact issues of his own.

Billy lead the California league in obp and average I believe. I'm sure he'll be a lot better in center than what some people think. Fwiw, Cingrani could be brought up and put on the NLCS roster and wouldn't be shocked if that happened at this point. Arredondo had a rough go in the two games he pitched, wonder if they replace him with Big O. Yes, I fully expect the Reds to win today. Am I a little nervous, yea, but it's more of an anxious feeling than nervous. Assuming they win, like I am already, rotation will be Homer, Arroyo, Latos, Cingrani/Leake I believe. Definitely think that's what it should be too so they split up Homer/Latos, and Homer would be on regular rest too.

Not bad, but I think I stay Arroyo, Homer, Latos, Leake. I have never really cared about the "split the power/soft arms up" strategy. Even if I did, the Homer/Latos starts would have a travel day in between. Typing this depresses me though, as you won't mistake any of those guys for Cueto.I'm not as confident as you, but I think we have a decent chance today. Headed that way in 10 minutes. Anyone else going?

Hamilton was 16th in AVG and 6th in OBP in the Cal League. He dropped off a bit when he was promoted to AA but I think he'll adjust. He just turned 22 and isn't a finished product yet but I think it's safe to say he won't hit for power. His walks were up and his strikeouts were down a bit this year but I think his whiff rate is probably enough to keep him from challenging for batting titles in the Majors.Barring some kind of Lonnie Smith deja vu in the OF, I think he'll be fine in Center. His speed should compensate for bad reads and he supposedly had enough arm to play SS.But that's all in the future. Good luck today but not too good

As for the Reds, while this has been a helluva season, I must remind them all, while it is great to enjoy it while it happens, don't get overconfident about the playoffs. I don't care how great you look in the regular season, it can all change as soon as it turns to October. As a Cardinals fan who saw the incredible '04 and '05 teams lose to (supposedly) inferior teams in the postseason, and then saw the '06 and '11 teams win it all by beating teams that were (supposedly) better than them, greatness in the summer never guarantees greatness in the fall. Just a word of warning. :)
:lmao: at jwp and Ghost Rider.
Still laughing?

Hope Dusty's not back. I don't care about the 97 wins.

Far too many errors he made in the postseason.

1-10 in series clinching games all-time.

I don't envy the decision they have to make at manager. I have said all along that it will all be determined by how this year goes, but it's hard to mark this year as a plus or minus right now. I do think you have to factor in that Cueto was out and Votto was on one leg when you consider the postseason flop. That played a bigger factor than who the manager was. Still, it's a results based business and I would think winning a division and losing rd 1 is the absolute minimum you should do with the 2012 Reds roster. Tough call and I will support BC in either direction.

Pretty much what I figured was going to happen. I'm ok with it. Everyone seems like they think it's a bad idea in here but when you say they should have pitched around Arias, didn't Broxton do his job and give the team a chance to get out of the inning. I mean, I don't think it's Dusty's fault that Rolen booted the ball. It wasn't Dusty's fault that Cueto got hurt. Wasn't his fault that he left in Latos "too long" when I thought Latos got squeezed really hard when he gave up the 6 runs.

If Bochy hadn't basically snuffed every potential Reds rally in Game 4 by having a reliever ready from the 4th inning on, the 6 run shelling Latos took wouldn't have been as glaring.

Dusty was saving pitchers like he could turn them in for free toothpicks after the game.

With Votto's obvious lack of power from the knee, I wonder if the offense would have clicked by moving him up and just dropping Stubbs/Cozart down. Maybe put Frazier up at 3, or (gasp) bat two lefties in a row and put Bruce in the three hole?

I'm hoping they find a solution at lead off (finally) so Cozart can be dropped down and hopefully thrive. The offense has got to get more consistent because getting that level of pitching again and avoiding injuries will be tough to repeat. Even a slight drop off could cost them 8-10 games and see them clawing for a playoff berth.

Fwiw, there are negative effects of Dusty not coming back, such as Brian Price not coming back either if he wouldn't get a managerial job..

Reds are close to signing Broxton for 3 years. This all but assures that Chapman is a starter now. :excited:

That gives the Reds a BP of:

Broxton

Marshall

Hoover

Lecure

I'll go to war with that backend and a Rotation of:

Cueto

Latos

Bailey

Arroyo

Chapman

with Leake, Corcino, and Cingrani waiting in the wings or trade bait to fill LF & CF.

The big assumption here is that Chapman will be an effective SP. He obviously has the stuff but he'll have to dial back his velocity to increase his pitch count. If Broxton's contract is in the ballpark of League (3/$22.5M) and Affeldt (3/$18M), it's probably OK, especially since the Reds have other closing options if Broxton gets hurt or shelled. Broxton's strikeout rate these days is pretty non-elite and he's hit at an age where most pitchers lose something off his fastball.

The problem with power pitchers is many times they increase velocity by not following proper pitching mechanics - so when they try to dial it back to increase stamina and control you get mixed results. I hope he does well as he is fun to watch pitch, but my God how many times are they going to jerk him back and forth between various roles.

Per Rosenthal
The deal is for three years and $21 million and carries a club option for 2016. The annual salaries would grow from $4 million in the first year, to $7 million and $9 million in the following seasons, with a $1 million buyout on the $9 million option in 2016.

Almost a lock Broxton turns into 2/12 with that buyout, but I don't mind it if Chapman is ready to start. That rotation is going to be ridiculous.

I like the deal of making Broxton the closer, but mostly its because i cant wait to see Chapman as a starter. That rotation of Cueto, Latos, Chapman, Arroyo and Bailey is going to be one of if not the best in baseball. Pretty amazing the Reds have that type of rotation after it was just a few years ago we would roll out Harang as our #1 pitcher, he can't even hold any of our top 5's jock strap.

Now i hope the Reds spend some cash on a LF/CF.
