Windows 10, anyone upgrading? (1 Viewer)

iOS and Android apps to be available in Windows 10's Windows Store.

Huge IMO.

No reason not to get a Surface 4 Pro now.

Our goal with the iOS bridge has never been simply to run iOS apps on Windows, Salmaan Ahmed, the Windows Bridge for iOS program manager, explained. Rather, our goal is to help you write great Windows apps that use as much of your existing code and knowledge as possible. We will, of course, continue to work to expand our iOS compatibility, but its important to note that there is much more you can do with the bridge.
Wow. That would be pretty awesome.

meh. i'm thinking of ditching Windows altogether and rolling with Ubuntu.
Try installing VirtualBox on Windows and running Linus distro in seamless mode. It's pretty cool to have Linux applications open in separate windows on your Windows desktop. Best of both worlds imo.

ETA: I run Mint XFCE as described above. Not sure if Ubuntu Unity desktop works as seamlessly.

I also upgraded overnight. I would probably like it better if the stupid apps would open. I can get into programs like Chrome, Excel and the like, but for some reason the apps will not open. Settings, Store, Maps, Candy Crush etc don't do anything when I click on them Do they need to be opened on a tablet and not a laptop?

The new browser doesn't work either. I get a message "Explorer.exe Element not found." Also my Dolby sound program isn't in the tray.

I'm dumb. TIA

Check with your manufacturer if you're having any problems, people.

I've had quite a few other issues than mentioned above as well with power management, display and things like that. Come to find out, some of the hardware on my model (Lenovo Z580) is not compatible with 10 yet so I'll be reverting back to 7 for the time being. Should have done a little more research than just reading here.

Interesting, I have had no issues at all on my Lenovo z570. I have had it installed for a week.

Yeah I was a little surprised myself. Here are the compatible Lenovo models (Z70-80 shown). But incompatible models are listed under #1 here.

How do you remote into a windows 10 PC?

All the tutorials I see out there just show you how to click the "enable remote access" checkbox on Windows 10. Great, did that. But when I try to remote in from a mac it asks for my domain. WTH is my domain here at home?

Try "WORKGROUP" as your domain name. Are you remoting in from within your network or outside? I believe ticking the enable remote assistance also adds a rule to windows firewall to allow remote access to the pc, but you may want to check your firewall rules, just in case.

Upgrade complete, no problems noted. Seems to be running very smooth. All bookmarks and stuff like that intact as far as I can tell.

I'm having an issue on my HP Pavilion 23 AIO that I don't see popping up anywhere else (but did see one person post about it on their HP Pav 23). After the computer goes to sleep, when I try to use it again, the screen is completely dimmed and there is no way to increase the brightness. In fact, the slider for brightness isn't available anywhere. This is insanely annoying. For those of you that upgraded, is the screen brightness slidebar on your machine still? It used to be both in the power options as well as in the right lower corner settings.

Microsoft was founded in 1975. Since then millions of people have died. WTF is Microsoft's problem?

assuming it's a local user set up on your windows pc, they usually are identified by computername\username or even ipaddress\username.

Just upgraded a Surface (no keyboard attached). Maybe I'm missing something, but the keyboard not popping up when touching in a box is absolutely ridiculous. It does in Chrome/FF but not in Edge/Office/search/etc. That is a pretty ####ty oversite.
strange... i was playing around with mine and it does work in edge if the keyboard isn't attached and it's in tablet mode. hopefully they get that fixed. i prefer the desktop mode over tablet mode mostly because they also drop my pinned icons from the bottom bar in tablet mode

Have you tried a clean install? I was having an issue with the screen not showing (black screen) after waking the laptop up from sleep. I bit the bullet and did a clean install and now it works just fine. I had to reinstall my other applications but that's not a big deal to me.

There are some apps that won't won't launch the virtual keyboard if you are in tablet mode but like you, I have had no problems with Edge.

In fact I use Edge only on tablet mode because of this since Firefox won't launch the virtual key boar automatically.

You can keep your bottom icons in the task bar in place in tablet mode as there is a setting for it. Just look for the tablets settings and you should see it.

I must have it in desktop mode. I barely touch the thing. Will check Monday.

I've got 8.1 looking and running like Windows 7...I'll stick with it for a while.
This is where I was. Never understood many of the complaints about 8, since I had it set to open in desktop and the only day-to-day difference for me was hitting the windows key instead of the start button when I wanted to open or search for something not on my desktop. But I was bored and curious, so installed 10. Not much difference for me so far, but at least the little differences have all been positive.

i'm just kind of the inherent buggy-ness of windows and fear of malware. seems like malware for linux based systems is pretty small. i'd also like to squeeze a little more life out of my laptop before throwing down some cash on something.

Can I ask a really simple question? Why do people choose to run apps on a desktop or laptop rather than run directly from a browser? I have no need to have a FB app when I can run it from Chrome and have 5 tabs open on various things at the same time. What am I missing out on here?

For many people that works just fine. For many others, there are many apps (read: programs) that just aren't available (or wouldn't work well) as browser apps. Facebook is a good example of an app that works well in the browser. Visual Studio (a programming environment) is an example of something that doesn't, despite attempts.

I am sure the reasons are different for everyone but I like the apps because of notifications. Unless my browser is set specifically to every app I want, I won't see notifications where as the apps can tell me any time I get mail, or a tweet or when new videos are available or new articles, etc.

Youtube worked fine. However several popular pron sites did not. :(
This is serious. What browser are you using? Try a different one. And make sure adobe flash is updated (just google update Adobe flash).

I use Firefox no porn problems noted.

I upgraded the day after it came out, and I've been having some wireless connectivity problems since.

Almost every other time I open my laptop, I'm no longer connected to the internet. Troubleshooting identifies it as a problem with the router, but all my other devices do not have a problem connecting during this time.Turning the router off and on does seem to remedy the problem eventually. That was tolerable for a while I guess, but now it will just randomly disconnect at times. It can be solved in about 30 seconds (by just trying to re-connect again and again), but it happens several times a day.

I was not having these problems with 8.1, granted this is a fairly new computer and I was only running 8.1 for about a week before I upgraded.

Thoughts? Anyone else having similar problems after upgrading?

No knowledge of this with Windows 10, but laptop going to Windows 8 had this problem when the PC went to sleep or standby it shut off the WiFi and reconnecting was iffy. Had to tell power management to not shut off the adapter. This is the same ancient laptop so it hasn't seen Windows 10 rolled out to it yet and since it is so old I'm waiting for now so don't know if this will return with 10

Hopefully this reply doesn't waste your time.

My 70+ yo father-in-law upgraded his own desktop last weekend. With no issues. Dude barely knows how to write emails. I spent 30 minutes tweaking apps but he loves it so far.

If my father-in-law can do it then nobody should be scared.

Anyone have issues with external HDs? Wanted to move some stuff around and took mine off the TV. Windows 10 can't access the disc. Some help thread online suggested reformatting but I don't want to lose the data. Will try and dig out an old laptop and see if I can move it somewhere else before the reformat.

Had to downgrade my wife's laptop. After about 10 minutes it would throw an error (something about a "conduit") and then the Start button/menu and search field would stop working. Found a number of articles online about the problem, but none of the solutions worked.

Had a hell of a time just getting "settings" to come up just to start the "revert" process, though because there seems to be no way to get there other than the Start button.

I have an issue where W10 backup does not recognize one of my drives, but I use it for everything else.

This may be worthy of it's own thread!

Could be permission issues. Does the drive show up?

Main rig upgraded in 20 minutes. Second rig timed out in the getting ready to install phase with error message: "Something went wrong, try again later".

Anyone figured out the Something went wrong error?

The drive shows up. Windows just can't access it, ie the files
