I have had this terrible pain on the top/front of my right shoulder for a month or two now. It seems worst where the supraspenatus thing is in the pictures. I'm getting some fatigue down the arm and possibly nerve pain. When I tried to throw a baseball this summer I had nothing. I used to pitch. I'm forty now BTW. I can still bring it submarine pain free and strong fyi. It seems to ha e gotten worse over the last few weeks and its killing me now as I sit in the car waiting for my son. It seems like a cold front is coming through now with dark skies so the pressure change may be causing more pain. Anyone got any ideas what's going on? Probably not a heart attack, right?

Well, a heart attack wouldn't last a month or two, so there's that.
That's what I'm saying. I have also been short of breath, and coughing non stop for a couple months but I figured it was allergies. I have them bad. I also have high blood pressure and could stand to lose a couple pounds. On an unrelated note, I polished off a pound of fatty sirloin roast with potatoes and onions about an hour ago. My shoulder also started throbbing like it had a pulse or heartbeat when I started this thread. It probably went on for five minutes but stopped. It felt kinda warm when that was happening. :HereIcomeElizabeth:

Whatever you do, don't actually go to the doctor. Give it a few more months and everything should clear up on its own.

I promise this isn't schtick. I went to the ER three times for the cough and they gave me prednisone and antibiotics each time. My own Dr. Quit a few months ago and I can't find a new one taking new patients. I'll probably call University orthopedic tomorrow, but FBG never let me down before.

Is there any numbness?

I have had dull pain in my shoulder blade/back for a few months as well as numbness/tingling in my arm/hand and found out I had a pinched nerve in my back that is causing everything.

acromion spur creating partial cuff tear. arthoscopic surgery to shave down tear and physical therapy recommended.

I had neck/shoulder pain once so bad I wanted to cry. Turned out it was a herniated disc. It can be that, torn labrum, arthritis, slap tear, etc. Without an mri impossible to tell.

Been laying on the couch on my back for thirty minutes. Pain now down into my elbow (nerve?) But my shoulder is slightly better but I'm coughing again like a mofo.

So I saw the Dr. Yesterday and he is 95% sure I have at least a torn labrum. There seems to be something else going on in the back also so I'm going to probably get an MRI in six weeks. I have to do P.T. first though, or the insurance company won't pay for the MRI. Insurance companies are the Devil.

THIS.

I have tore my rotator cuff 3 times. The worst was when the pain would refer down my arm, and it would ache from the tip of my pinky to the tip of my thumb. I could not lift my arm off the bed in the morning. No strength, could not throw ( I was a pitcher also)

I had a complete tear of the supraspinatus. I had a sub-acromial decompression to shave the spurs and repaired the tear.

The physio afterward is a #####

I just love how insurance company docs feel they know the best course of tx. They are all generalists and they have never met you. They just read the notes and look at their insurance coverage bible and there you go. I always had a great laugh when I'd try and get auths for hip or knee replacements and some of these loser companies would push back with they need to try NSAIDS, PT, etc. The pts caught on to this BS because once your cartilage is gone enough, there is nothing that will help. It's up to you when you want the sx because it's coming at some point.. So they come in telling us they tried PT, NSAIDS...and nothing helps. It goes in the docs note and voila, approved! I've never encountered the insurance company asking for PT records. They go by the doc's notes that I submitted. If it's not auth'd then I would set up a time for the surg to talk to their medical doc and after that, it's always been approved.

Hope you can get what you need done without too many hoops. Best wishes. :)

so, went to the ortho today 2nd time for my shoulder.  got another shot and heard the dreaded possible labrum tear uttered.  I have torn my other cuff and suspected I did the other shoulder, but the pain has been different, more constant, coming from back of the shoulder and deltoid.  if this is a labrum, any background on the pain would be helpful.

So this is your excuse for sucking at golf?

Isn't a labrum part of the ######?

There are so many things it could be. Goto a ####### orthopedist and stop asking us.
I don't understand why there is so much of this whenever people post health question threads. It isn't like doctors are all knowing and always solve your freaking problems instantly on the first try. Sometimes getting other ideas can help.

But what do I know. I only had to go to three doctors several times, pay for two MRI's, and go to countless therapy sessions all for nothing before a doctor I was seeing for something else actually asked me how I was feeling overall. I explained to him my elbow pain and he pretty much instantly identified the problem. Said he had gone through the same thing. Referred me to his doctor and voila. Today I am pain free.

So I am sure you will point out that a doctor is who ultimately identified the problem, it certainly wasn't because it was in his area of expertise and it had everything to do with him having personally experienced it. If I had listened to the first doctor, things would have been miserable for me. He even had told me he was 99% certain with the 1% being a possible more serious issue. I don't think the OP wants to use FBG in place of all doctors. Just looking for ideas.

Please tell me you had tennis elbow and know the cure.

Tore the labrum in my left shoulder. It was a mother####er. Pain was burning and sharp and made my arm useless. Had multiple MRIs and did PT and multiple cortisone with no relief, still weren't sure what the problem was so I went in for an arthrogram. That showed the labral tear. The surgery used two plastic screws that the doc stitched the labrum to those screws so it would heal in place. Took about a full year to get back to fully pain free and 18mths to get all the motion back. PT was a mother####er too. Oh and because it was torn for so long all the tendons had stretched so the doc tightened those too so in PT the stretching the PT did was one of the most painful things I have ever endured. Good luck chem...labral tears are the suck.

can you describe the pre op pain?  also, I have read MRI with dye may not work great.  was your MRI useless?

MRI was useless with and without contrast, only the arthrogram showed it. That sucked....about a 8" needle into the interior of the humerus head/shoulder girdle. Wasn't painful due to the lidocaine but felt really odd and if you move wrong it can damage the humerus head.

As to the pain in my shoulder, it was the posterior side of the labrum I tore so the pain was under the shoulder blade (I was diagnosed with bursitis at one point which was wrong), that came up and over the top of the shoulder and then down my upper arm. It was mostly burning pain with some sharp pain in the back of the shoulder.

72 hours and I am encouraged by the shot so far.  it's been 5 months with the pain and I noticed that I am doing things differently to compensate for the pain.  part of me is scared to use my arm properly, but I will give it another 48 hrs of ice and naprosyn and maybe I get lucky.

:goodposting:

I still go see the doctor to confirm they aren't as smart as I think they are. I have an entire thread on IBS and I mostly didn't learn #### from the doctor. Once I was incorrectly diagnosed a couple times I finally went to the internet and found a specialist in a part of the country I don't live...

I agree with this poster and you can't always trust doctors. Don't even get me started when we get to real issues like cancer and such.

Partial rotator cuff tear which was a surprise to the Dr.  Lots of traveling pain involved apparently.  He also mentioned tendinitis or something.  He gave me a shot in the office back in March or April and it helped alot.  He had a screen he was watching to see where to hit with the needle.  It was pretty cool.  He said it could last up to a year, but may wear off sooner.

so, I had 2 shots of cortisone for shoulder and after shot I developed thrush, which led my primary doctor to test me for HIV..........yeeesh.

so, in compensating for my shoulder I have stressed my neck creating a pinched nerve.  ortho today took X-rays and determined I have cervical bone spurs, exacerbated by my weak shoulder, impinging at C6-7.  prescribed a medrol pack, but the steroid just is something I hate taking due to bloat and side effects.

anyone remotely have this issue and any advise?  should I be put down at this point?  if so, in office or at home?

One thing that happened to me due to dealing with the tear for so long was that my AC joint was messed up. That required another surgery to remove the meniscus clean up the joint and remove about 8mm of the distal clavicle. That surgery was a quick recovery though and much easier. GL chem....I'd push for the repair if you can. It's a long 12-18mths but IMO totally worth it.

I had my R shoulder scoped and it wasn't fun.  That was 'only' an acromion shave and cuff repair.  18 months just to feel normal.  My arm wont ever be what it was, but at least it's somewhat normal.  Not sure I have the fortitude or want to spend $$ to go thru with a Labrum repair and the discovery involved (arthrogram).  Very shortsighted right now.  My only other option is to ride shots for the time being.

I will drop by later and take a look at it.   I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night, think I can fix it.

That sucks and the cuff repair is about the same length of recovery as the labrum repair.

Boy, i wish i'd had my shoulder cleaned up. Tore my cuff playing b-ball in my early 40s, but i was dealing poker at the time and didn't want to afford the loss of six months' tips getting an op. Now, in my mid-60s, the shoulder is a constant issue, especially w sleep. Another thing to consider - if you intend to be elderly, the shoulders become ever more important (canes, walkers, getting up & adjusting oneself) as the rest of one's frame starts to go. My 92yo ma is having more mobility issues due to her shoulders than her legs. Dunno how much reconstruction helps with geriatric issues, but it's shonuff worth investigating. GL -

Timely thread. Hurt my left shoulder in the summer during a move. Oddly enough, I was moving the last box which contained some of my beer cellar for my brother to hold onto. Maybe that was a sign. Anyway, held off as it wasn't ridiculous pain but it was always nagging. I still can't sleep on it and depending on the angle of movement, it has varying degrees of pain.

I figured I'd had enough when trying to put on my coat and had a sharp shooting pain so went to the orthopedic doctor yesterday. Had an x-ray on my left shoulder yesterday and it came back negative, as expected. The MRI is scheduled for next Tuesday. Based on some of the responses in this thread, I am a little concerned that this may not be enough and this will drag on for a long time and cost a ton.

I'd bet you're in for some PT, which does help. Sorry GB.
