I don’t know how I have missed this podcast but “The Daily” NYT podcast is really great.

Picks an interesting topic, sometimes topical often just an interesting subject, and gives about 20-30 minutes of well produced audio on it.
I think it's over-produced, with some really heavy-handed pregnant pauses and manipulative background music, and the host has some odd verbal tics, but I really think it's a great podcast, and one that I rarely miss.  There are days when I just can't face reporting about our current federal administration and just have to shut it off and listen to sports to drown out the truth.

Anyone else listen to the Dave Ramsey Show?
Used to. I even led a few of his classes.

But I decided I disagree with too much of his stuff personally. It's great for those who need it.

But I'll prefer ChooseFI, stay wealthy, stacking Benjamin's, and my favorite of the ilk, Retirement Answer Man. Even if it doesn't particularly fit your life right now, listen to RAM. Roger Whitney does a great job.

I like it enough, but prefer Start Here. Similar concept.

I have been listening to Talking Sopranos and re watching the show with the podcast. Two of the actors from the show talk about each episode per podcast. Inside bull#### about actors and certain scenes. I am up to episode five and I am enjoying the re watch. This is my first re watch of this show.

the throwback podcast couple of 40something guys who have known each other since middle school relisten to albums from the 90s and 2000s and are generally hilarious

cane and rinse podcast deep dive into a video game

Rogan

Hardcore history

Bunch of others I'm forgetting

The recent Rogan w/Jocko podcast was good. Primarily because Jocko parrots what I've been saying about police training but they talk about some interesting topics that followers of Jocko will enjoy.

Also, the recent Hardcore History is just excellent. Dan Carlin could read a recipe for making lasagna from scratch and I'd listen to it. He's a master at what he does. He also mentioned that Blueprint for Armageddon finally went to the vault so you have to pay for them now if you want them. I'm sure you can find them elsewhere for free but from his website it will be $2.49/show.

Dave is great for people who have a problem with managing debt or a budget to gain a mindset of success and work quickly towards that goal. He terrible at investment advice and tries to sales people everything known to man at bad rates.

I have found if you treat him like a motivational speaker he works well for some of my friends that suck with money, but then going deeper with them on finances is better for his incorrect methods on financial stuff.

I'll have to check out RAM!

I'll have to check those two out. Thanks for the tip.

Is that the one with Dan Hanzus from the Around the NFL podcast?

Right now I find myself listening to

all the smoke with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson

joe rogan

flagrant 2 with andrew Schultz and Akaash

Just started this and it's ridiculous, crazy stuff.

Before there were sex tapes, there were sex tapes. Before there were stars who became bigger stars when their private porn went public, there were porn stars. Traci Lords. The first, the best, the O.G. Hardcore since ’84. From the Peabody-nominated C13Originals studios and Vanity Fair's Lili Anolik, comes Once Upon a Time… in the Valley, featuring Ashley West. In the roaring 1980s X world, Traci Lords reigned supreme. No one questioned her right to sovereignty. Only, it turned out, the biggest star in Adult, wasn’t one. As America would discover in July 1986, when the FBI busted down her door. Traci Lords was really Nora Kuzma, who entered the industry as a 15-year-old high school sophomore. Traci, the victim, was saved. And the industry, the villain, was very nearly destroyed. But what if the victim here was also the villain; the villain, also the victim? Once Upon a Time… in the Valley is the world's first real-life psychological thriller and porno-noir mystery. Just think Boogie Nights—if Boogie Nights had a three-way with Gone Girl and A Star is Born.

I started listening to the Fall of Civilizations podcast. It is really well produced and well done. The episode on the Aztecs in particular was interesting.

looks like the Dunc’d On basketball podcast is going to a subscription model. I like the podcast well enough (listen maybe once a week or so), but it’s certainly not something I’d pay anywhere close to $160 a year for. I wonder how successful they’ll be with that model.

It will be $115 per year for the initial subscribers and those folks will be grandfathered into that price forever.  I think they have at least 1000 patrons on patreon, which is like $84 per year.

My guess is that overall he is tired of doing the work of finding and maintaining sponsors and/or paying for them and figures that it is worth the trade-off with possibly lower revenues.  It also seems like ad prices and listens are down a bit now across the industry, making it an easier decision.  I used to have an estimate on how much they made from advertising based on industry standards and it was shockingly high.  But I guess they have other stuff in the pipeline with the potential broadcasting and just want want to streamline their overall operation. even if it is a revenue reduction.  Though if they can get just 3,000 subscribers at $160, that's almost half a mill per year, which is not too bad.

I hope it works out for them.  Even if I was diehard fan of the podcast though, I'm not sure one podcast is worth roughly the price of what I pay for something like Amazon Prime or Netflix.  Though they have a niche as cap nerds, there are so many other quality basketball podcasts out there available for free.

Deep Cover is excellent! It’s the true story of an FBI agent who went undercover in the late 70’s/early 80’s in a biker gang and eventually took down one of the largest international drug cartels in history.

If you are a history nerd and enjoyed watching “Rome” on HBO, there is a podcast called Raising Standards that’s a rewatch.  The people who do The Emperors of Rome podcast are doing it.  They have had quite a few actors/directors on the show.  I think they are 4 episodes in.

I promise I'll only do this once:

A friend and I started a new podcast called Dreams in Color. I'm 53 and he's 23, so we often haven't seen the same films, but we have light conversations (usually with a guest) about film, art, and their meaning in society. We're rarely political, and if you want some light listening, you might enjoy it. It's available on all streaming platforms. But if you don't want to install Apple Music or Spotify, you can stream the podcast here on Anchor for free. There are three episodes to choose from, and we've already recorded four more that need to be edited. I did all the music as well.

Congrats man! That's cool. Good luck.

Absolutely love Dunc'd On pod, easily one of my favorites.  Love the game breakdowns, the team build debates, and the mock off-season episodes are podcasting gold each year.  That said, I just can't justify paying that much for a pod.  I'll miss it and hope the once a week episodes they'll make available hits on enough to make it worth keeping in the rotation.

@jdoggydogg - Just wanted to tell you that I listened to the first episode today - good job on the podcast!   I really hope it works out for you and you are able to do this for awhile.

I'll definitely give it a try.

Completely agree. The more competing distribution models the better for podcast fans.

Seems to me there are so many sports podcasts it would be tough to charge anything for them. Although the advertising on some of them has gotten so bad that I frequently unsubscribe. Every time that I do it seems like another 10 are out there to try. If you want a subscription model I would think that you need a niche topic or you need high profile guests.

BTW, I'm not saying that podcasts shouldn't be monetized and there should be NO advertising and NO subscription price. I'm just saying that if you fill the middle of your podcasts with advertising I will choose not to listen. Rogan ended up making $100mil on a podcast that has never had ads in the middle so people saying they have to advertise in the middle of the podcast to make any money are just plain wrong imo. "The Indicator" was probably one of my favorite podcasts but having ads in the middle of a 8-9min podcast just became grueling. If you can't provide 7 uninterrupted minutes of something to say without an ad you just aren't for me no matter how interesting your content is. I'll never listen again.

As an audience member I'm willing to listen to ads at the start, listen to ads at the end, to go the patreon page to support the podcast, and/or use promo codes and amazon links to support the podcasts I enjoy. There is just too much of a youtube-esque money grab going on in all too many podcasts right now.

Thank you bro. We have 9 episodes recorded and some excellent guests all ready for editing. No money to be made yet but it's fun!

Nice.   Do you get in the rhythm of recording a few in one sitting, and then editing them and releasing them on a different schedule?     How long does the process take, and did it take much start up to get it going?

Doing a podcast is something I have thought about for a few years,  ever since my son shot me down over my idea with him and his friends.

We book guests and curate social media collateral, so once a week is when we record. I wrote and performed all the music, but that's not a recurring time commitment. Editing one episode takes around three hours. Editing software is free and mostly easy to use. USB mic (including a nice posable stand and headphones) was $200.

A couple more movie podcasts I have been loving:

The Evolution of Horror and Journey Through Sci-Fi

Both British, and they have a bit of crossover in the guests.   What's a little different is they both choose a topic, then do a dozen + episodes on each topic talking about 1 or 2 movies in each episode.    For example, the sci fi did a "season" of AI.   So episodes had combos like Terminator/T2 to Short Circuit/Wargames to Ex Machina/Her.   They go from old to new usually.   The horror one did a seasons of Slashers, Ghosts, Folklore, etc..  and are currently doing a season of Mind and Body that has had some interesting movies.

The Missing Cryptoqueen has a new episode up after a long hiatus. Picks up where it left off last August, nothing real earth shattering but an update to the case.

Think I found that podcast from this thread so anyone that was listening might want to check it out.

Been jamming on a music podcast that even @Ilov80s might like (not sure) called Strong Songs.    Each episode is a detailed breakdown of a song.  Each episode is 40-50 minutes just on one song.   People more musically versed might like it even more as I get lost a bit when he is talking specific signatures and scales and such, but he brings a passion that is contagious.  He also plays parts on the piano or guitar and layers in what's going on.   Just listened to the one on Paranoid Android today, and I am currently listening to an episode where he breaks down Aretha's Think 2x - the original and the Blues Brothers version.

Yeah, I pretty much love the idea of this podcast.   Drinking some gin and listening to the Episode on Like a Prayer.

Have to bump this again for "Cocaine and Rhinestones. Season two follows the life and career of George Jones and those around him. The amount of research Tyler Mahan Coe has done to produce this is truly amazing. He does tie in some historical stories that some complain about but I have enjoyed.

might want to try Records Revisited.  They bring in musicians and such to review notable albums - by track  The Matt Nathanson episode on U2 is gold.

let me know what you think.  The first 30 minutes is usually banter and then it gets into the album.
Sounds good, I appreciate the rec - always looking for new pods.

Usually when I try something like this I will scroll down and click a couple where I at least know the album fairly well.   So my first 2 will be Tidal and Who's Next.

Hi I have to drive a very boring 3 hour car trip here soon. Could someone recommend a podcast that I could listen to for the duration of this drive? Something that will keep me awake and engaged for the whole trip. Thank you.

Nothing too over the top, I will be driving. No explosions or sirens or stuff.
