The more episodes of The Expanse I watch, the more impressed I am with this show.  It for sure has me hooked after 4 episodes.

It might turn into a GOT thing where I have to pick up the books and start reading.  They seem to be getting praise as well, and there are 8 books I think?

I tried an episode or two but found it slow to grab me.

We watched "Sherlock Holmes" last night. I haven't seen this since it was in the theaters. It's still pretty fun with the Downey-Law chemistry being a highlight. Rachel McAdams plays another same-ish role of gf/wife/helpmate.  It's overstuffed and gimmicky like all Guy Ritchie films tend to be.

I am about 2/3 of the way through Leviathan Wakes, the 1st of the series.  It's not GOT level, but it's enjoyable.  3.5/5 maybe (but I'm not a huge sci-fi reader either so sci-fi fans may rank it higher).  So far there are only 2 characters' alternating viewpoints.  I was expecting a wider cast so maybe that tempers it a bit as well.

I got through a season or two and liked it...then forgot about it. Where is it- I'd like to keep going.

Watched the pilot last night.  I'm on board.

I probably should have been more clear - not GOT level as far a overall quality, but I've heard people talk of the show in a similar breath as far as following around different characters and jumping you into the story without a lot of hand holding.

One of the podcasts I listen to said something about a character that isn't in the books until book 2 is very relevant in the first season, so I would assume that they get a wider range of characters as the books go on?

Agreed. I loved it as well - mostly because Steinfeld was superb.  That was 9 years ago, now. Holy.  They haven't done much since then.
You don't say that.

Buster Scrubbs was brilliant for an anthology.  Their material still has more layers than an onion.

The Adam Sandler/Jennifer Aniston Murder Mystery movie...bad.  Very bad.  Don't waste your time.
Anything associated with Sandler's stupid face is bound to suck. Did he kiss Aniston in the movie? I swear he casts certain female leads just so he can kiss them.

Do we credit Casino, Bringing out the Dead, and Wolf of Wall Street to lazy Scorsese or prime Scorsese?

Because whatever spectrum they are on, films like Kundun and Hugo have to be on the other and I'm pretty sure I know what side of that argument I'd want to be on.

I loved Buster Scruggs.
Nobody handles the subject of death like the Coen brothers.  They can hit chords that other artists just can't.

The metaphysical charm of characters like Donnie (Lebowski), Charlie Meadows (Barton Fink), and Leonard Smalls (Raising Arizona) are really unsurpassed on film.  They can tiptoe the line between reality and fantasy like few ever could.

And that's not even touching on the brilliance that went into everything about the Tuturro scene from Millers Crossing.

I'm a big fan of The Departed, although that was awhile back. I know this is blasphemy, but I think Wolf Of Wall Street is start to finish the most entertaining film Scorsese ever made short of Goodfellas.

Yes yes yes.

Buster Scruggs received mixed reviews. That really surprised me, because I think it was outstanding.

I admit, the Buster Scruggs story itself caught me a little off guard and I didn't fully appreciate it until later viewings.  The Liam Neeson one can only be described as one of the most haunting segments of film I've ever watched.  The prospector and wagon train stories were poetically brilliant.

Just revisted Wolf of Wall Street a few weeks ago and  has incredible pacing for a 3 hr movie.  Love it.

Scruggs was good.  If I recall I enjoyed 4 of the 6 stories. 3 of which were excellent. What I meant was more that they haven't even been that active since 2010.  i could not get into Hail Caesar! and haven't even tried to watch Inside Llewyn Davis

I've seen Hail Caesar! multiple times and I don't know what I'm watching.  I'm in the exact same boat as you on Llewyn Davis.  You do have incredibly strong points for your argument.

Llewyn Davis was pretty dull. I know people hated Hail Ceasar!, but I enjoyed it as fluff.

I thought True Grit was great, but
Meh. I liked  well enough but it doesn't add much to their oeuvre beyond setting. while i have enjoyed their storytelling over the years, i don't know they have done much to expand on it. maybe "Inside llewellyn davis" or "a serious man" give some personal insight about them but those are weak tea compared to "No Country...".  And "NCfOM" was 12 years ago. they have made a bunch of truly excellent films - some of my favorites of all time, in fact - that have influenced a generation of filmmakers but it's cutting much closer to self-parody lately.

i'd put all of those on non-prime list for me. they can be enjoyable films but also get the benefit of his name attached to them. he can make films that interest him, for sure, because he's earned that.

Further proving my contention that 99% of artists have a peak period of five to fifteen years wherein all their great work is accomplished and the rest of their careers cannot possibly compete.

Interestingly...I think DiCaprio is the flaw in that movie.  The guy they should have cast as Jordan Belfort was actually in the movie...Jon Bernthal.

I don't think Berenthal has the range for that role. Have never heard anyone do anything but praise Leo in that role, bizarre.

Murder mystery, if you like Adam Sandler movies then you will like this one with Jennifer Aniston. Slight ripoff of Clue.  Plus it is another classic Sandler wants to travel so let's film a movie, but funny enough to watch.

Scorsese peaked in 1985.

"Murder Mystery" - Adam Sandler, Jennifer Anniston

meh - it wasn't completely terrible, but it could have been much better.  Essentially a money grab for Sandler and Anniston.

We saw the title and thought, sure let's give it a go. Then saw the stars and immediately opted out for I am mother instead.

There is just no accounting for taste.  Or actually reading a thread.
