This one is a masterpiece all around. Added bnus that the album looked badass as well.
“..... oh by the way, which one’s Pink?...”One of the best albums ever, and there are days where I do think it is better than Dark Side.
Also, it is worth noting that not every song on the album is about Syd Barrett, just the title track and Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar are about dealing with their sudden popularity following the success of their prior album, generally speaking.
I think Bettye LaVette did a cover of "WYWH" a few years ago. She's great, but she ain't Redding.THIS is one of the best musical ideas i ever heard. Thankyouthankyouthankyou for putting it in my head, for it will have a long & strong life in my imagination.
Somebody should totally do it NOW. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" too, while we're at it. Imagine that? Get a chorus, Slash & Kamasi Washington for solos, a rap break, then just have the chorus sing "Shine on.......shine on.....shine on.....shine on.....shine on.....shine on....." during the upbeat part at the end and have a soul screamer riff the #### out of it like Otis or Wikkit Pikkit. Who would you get? Mary J or Joss Stone could totally do it (i adapted a Floyd song, Learning To Fly, for solo piano/female singer for the Santa Fe cabaret act of that gal i used to sing in hot tubs with and it was great) but i can't think of a guy for it. Cee-lo?
Next best thing...THIS is one of the best musical ideas i ever heard. Thankyouthankyouthankyou for putting it in my head, for it will have a long & strong life in my imagination.

Kind of a "heard it once" or chart-read version, like a lot of old soul covers of Beatle tunes.I think Bettye LaVette did a cover of "WYWH" a few years ago. She's great, but she ain't Redding.
Don’t like Pink Floyd but this is a good album with a great songPink Floyd- Wish You Were Here (1975)
Shine On You Crazy Diamond Pts. 1-5
Welcome to the Machine

Shine On You Crazy Diamond Pts. 6-9
A lot of folks like this better than DSOTM, including me. An homage to Syd Barrett, the “crazy diamond” who left the band 7 years earlier. Good stuff.
Bowie, The Who, and U2 have all been chosen.Don’t like Pink Floyd but this is a good album with a great song
2 PF albums before any Bowie , Who , Kinks , Cars,Lizzy,Zevon,U2,Stooges,REM et cetera
I’ve become a curmudgeon
Oh for cripes sake get off my lawnBowie, The Who, and U2 have all been chosen.
I was being facetious, as per my avatar. It’s 1a/1b/1c among Animals, DSOTM and WYWH.Agreed. I like Pink Floyd, just not a mega fan
Interesting- never thought of that. Guess it probably couldn’t be though unless Kiss knew about the Pistols very early on - Love Gun was actually released before Bullocks.Speaking of sex pistols, anyone else ever think that KISS's Love Gun was a lame pg ripoff of their name?
Correct but pistols were around since 75 and love gun was released in 77. Just sounds like something gene would do.Interesting- never thought of that. Guess it probably couldn’t be though unless Kiss knew about the Pistols very early on - Love Gun was actually released before Bullocks.
Agreed - I’m sure he somehow saw money in it.Correct but pistols were around since 75 and love gun was released in 77. Just sounds like something gene would do.
You know it.Agreed - I’m sure he somehow saw money in it.
I had that one in elementary school.
I was very much into Kiss at the age of five. You couldn't have been cooler than Ace Frehley.I had that one in elementary school.
Rotated between that and this one:

Kiss love must go in cycles. I was into Kiss when I as about 8, again around 16, then again around 28. I still listen to some Kiss occasionally but cannot imagine ever being into them again.I was very much into Kiss at the age of five. You couldn't have been cooler than Ace Frehley.
Then, when I was fourteen and even dumber than I was when I was five, I liked Kiss again -- for the music.
Yep. I can vouchsafe that. I still like the song "Cold Gin," among others.Kiss love must go in cycles. I was into Kiss when I as about 8, again around 16, then again around 28. I still listen to some Kiss occasionally but cannot imagine ever being into them again.
So a couple more years then.Kiss love must go in cycles. I was into Kiss when I as about 8, again around 16, then again around 28. I still listen to some Kiss occasionally but cannot imagine ever being into them again.
About the same cycle as those insects that only come out every few years. So a couple more years then.
Gene really is kind of the proverbial turd in the punchbowl.Correct but pistols were around since 75 and love gun was released in 77. Just sounds like something gene would do.
I think most of the albums have wound up in some sort of digression. But to bring it back on track, Wish You Were Here, both album and song, certainly seem like the most accessible -- to me, anyway -- Pink Floyd music that there is.It seems Wish You Were Here can not even hold the attention of the conversation here. This is not my favorite Pink Floyd album, but the title track is one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs and there is certainly some inspired music here.
Cicada's? Probably about right, every 17 years or so.About the same cycle as those insects that only come out every few years.
Well, yoga pants only held our attention for 15 seconds. Pretty much an ADD crowd. It seems Wish You Were Here can not even hold the attention of the conversation here. This is not my favorite Pink Floyd album, but the title track is one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs and there is certainly some inspired music here.
Really? It seems to me it's gotten more comments than some others. It seems Wish You Were Here can not even hold the attention of the conversation here.
Yeah, I agree with you. Tim's left it up, too.Really? It seems to me it's gotten more comments than some others.
The Wall is what got me into Pink Floyd and was my number 1 album for a long time; I was obsessed with it for years. That said, I barely listen to it anymore, but could turn it on today and still know every little thing about it. That is how ingrained in my head it is.Love Pink Floyd and this is probably their greatest work. However, as a fan of more of a straight ahead rock songs, the wall is my favorite PF work.
You insiders at the NBA thread make it nigh impossible for a mere basketball novice to even hope to keep up.Like the NBA thread, the Classic Album thread has become where rock fans go to rag at each other about whatever they want, with timmy throwing a rib roast off the bridge each morning to get the gators twitchin'
It became a necessity last summer when Danny Ainge dumped like $3.7MM from his roster to get the deal the Celtics signed with Gordon Hayward to fit under the cap with the price of a large slushie to spare but then, because of lost revenue (caps are strictly based on a % of leaguewide income) from so many short series during the '17 playoffs revised the cap down to where the Celts were three bags of Cheetos over the cap and had to trade one of their best players (Avery Bradley) for a cheaper guy in order to comply. Instantly, everybody had a Sportrac eyeball on their team's sitch. Already it's just a thang. You insiders at the NBA thread make it nigh impossible for a mere basketball novice to even hope to keep up.
How the hell do you keep track of contracts like that?
There are a bunch of harshters over there. More than once an entire page of that thread has been notices of posts from folk i've put on 'ignore'Because knowing every player on every team and Simmons spazzing about trades is a big thing in that thread you also needed the cap? Sheesh.
eta* I'm just teasing. I dig that thread but don't comment in it.
Heh.There are a bunch of harshters over there. More than once an entire page of that thread has been notices of posts from folk i've put on 'ignore'
was?!?! wtf is was?! now, i was past vital when hiphop blossomed, so i havent held my ear to the ground like i useta, but this is some sad, sad ####. i've heard maybe 3 new rhyming patterns in the last decade, production value is mistook for genius all the frikkin time and every "artist" in the industry has put cash over grow far as i can see. and, of course, great female artists like Hill & Badu fell off from less-than-zero necessity from their 'peers'. Kendrick Lamar???? Run The Jewels???? Cardi FRIKKIN B?????????????????????????????THAT's 30 yrs of culmination? yeah, right...From Itunes: “To understand the significance of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, it’s important to remember what mainstream hip-hop was like in 1998. Materialism and misogeny were rampant, fanned by music videos that presented women as objects or conquests. Hill’s first solo album provided a sharp counterpoint by projecting the perspective of a young black woman dealing with issues of identity and sexuality.”
