Unreal.  While it sounds weird, having that happen on the pitch at a major tournament with top medical professionals around may have saved his life.

This is exactly what happened. The successful resuscitation stats are incredibly grim. That's mostly because when it happens outside of a hospital setting, too much time passes before it's recognized and appropriate treatment is started. In the hospital, you're usually dealing with already sick people.

Here you have a healthy guy that had about as prompt of treatment as you can get. It's why I was so grim when I first posted. He literally had everything in his favor and it saved his life. 

This is almost certainly not your classic "heart attack" from a blockage of vessels to the heart. There could be a structural problem (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) but that's incredibly unlikely as I'm sure he's had multiple evaluations throughout his career and it would have been picked up. It could be he was mildly sick with something that was affecting his heart (myocarditis), but again, unlikely. More likely he had some kind of arrythmia that caused the electrical conduction of his heart to go faulty and stop. They were able to shock him back into a normal rhythm. Those kinds of things (something he may have been born with) are really hard to pick up because a lot of times they are very intermittent with little symptoms. Unfortunately sometimes the first symptom is sudden cardiac death. 

Incredibly lucky and I'm so glad it played out how it did.
