⚽ Soccer Match-day Thread (5 Viewers)

Not sure where to post this without Floppo yelling at me but huge kudos to the Brentford fans yesterday for their reception of Saka.  Seriously made me smile - such a great moment.

I don't play fantasy soccer, but this reminds me of the week where Kane and Son had like 4-5 goals/assists between them. Pretty sure anyone that stacked a Pogba/Bruno mf has won this week

Btw...love how refs appear to be letting them play so far (in two games). No ticky tack bs calls, and I haven't seen them go to VAR yet. Hoping that VAR is used more on clear and obvious, and not to dissect every play in minutia.

Yeah, Lukaku is going to fit in so well. Exactly what they need
Tbf to their attack, CP (eta...Palace, not Puli) sitting deep doesnt allow those three quick, smaller attackers much room to do their thing. And they're not doing well playing shorter combinations.

CP has been oddly indecesive with his first touch. Sitting on it a moment before moving forward (and then looking frosty). Either he's needing a split second to figure out what to do (not good), or setting up players to take on off the dribble (better, but also allowing the double to form, so not great). I'd love to see him take his first touch positively into space and immediately get to CP frosty mode.

Liverpool seem fairly in control but it’s been a weird half.  Norwich with more possession and passes than Pool??  I’m assuming an aberration and not a change in philosophy.

They’ve looked a little disjointed most of the half, hopefully they can tighten up the passing and keep the ball better.

Man, who absolutely hates Norwich?

Starting schedule for them.

Liverpool

Manchester City

Leicester

Arsenal

What a brutal 3 game start before they finally get an easy matchup.

Just posted in the US thread... TV today w US players

Mainz v RB Leipzig - 9:30a on ESPN+

It’s yet another debut as Jesse Marsch leads RB Leipzig in Bundesliga action for the first time on Sunday. Marsch will be looking to start the season on the right foot with a win in his first league match since joining the club this summer from sister club RB Salzburg. He will of course be joined by Tyler Adams, who US fans are hoping will settle into a more permanent role in the midfield. The team will be taking on a Mainz team that finished just six points out of the relegation playoff spot, so anything less than a win would be a disappointment.

Other network notes:

Sergiño Dest and FC Barcelona get the big network treatment when they kick off their regular season against Real Sociedad at 2p on ABC and ESPN Deportes. There is a Messi-sized hole in Barca at this point, so it will be intriguing to see how Dest and his teammates adjust.

Miles Robinson, George Bello, and Atlanta United, who just hired Gonzalo Pineda to take over next week as their new manager, take on Bob Bradley and LAFC at 4p on ESPN.

It’s rivalry action as the Portland Timbers take on Cristian Roldan and the Seattle Sounders at 7:30p on FS1.

Streaming overseas:

Konrad de la Fuente and Marseille take on Bordeaux at 2:45p on beIN Sports. Konrad picked up an assist as his team came from behind in his debut last weekend.

It’s American v American in Italy potential as Venezia, with newly arrived Gianluca Bussio and Tanner Tessmann, take on Andrija Novakovich’s Frosinone in Coppa Italia action at 2:45p on Paramount+.

NYRB are having one of those seasons where everything possible is going wrong.

Last night, in a tie game in injury time, they get called for a questionable handball in the box giving up a PK.

Their keeper saves it, but the refs says he moved too early so a rekick is taken.

Their keeper saves it again, but ref again calls for yet another retake for moving to early.

3rd pk goes in for the loss.
