if other players are calling for his release then he should go. Pick up someone from another practice squad if they need to.
Free Agents still on the street:

Larod Stephens Howling (did he ever heal properly?)

Felix Jones

Deji Karim

Delone Carter

Willis McGahee (toast)

Edit: a few others I missed -- Ronnie Brown, Brian Leonard, Michael Bush, LeRon McClain

That is an ugly list. Probably better off just promoting Josh Harris or steal a body from another team's practice squad.

I still think they have a talk with Blount, he makes an apology to the team, and he sticks around.

If there's any truth to the anonymous quotes by Steelers players saying they "wished they'd left [blount] in Memphis" or that they're worried that he's "corrupting" LeVeon Bell, then this is a MUCH bigger issue than leaving the field early. Management could decide he's taking more off the table than he brings to it, and if that's the case, he's history.

The PS lists are just as ugly.

With the Browns cutting Tate a few minutes ago he'd be target #1 if they punt Blount(see what I did there?!)....but he'll also probably be target #1 for Indy too, or any other team that's currently hurting at RB.

My question would be "Why was Tate cut?" Is he doing the same thing in Cleveland that Blount is doing in Pittsburgh? If he is, I doubt they'd cut one complainer/malcontent to pick up another.

Ben tate is available
He has to go through waivers. He will only cost a team 375K for his remaining salary this season. He can be released after that without any $$ impact.

Details from ESPN --"

Breaking down Ben Tate's contractMarch, 19, 2014Mar 19

Ben Tate's contract with the Cleveland Browns is a “show me” deal that rewards him for staying healthy, but puts off his big payday until 2016.

The deal is for two years and $6.2 million, and breaks down this way, according to ESPN's Roster Management System:

  • Tate received a signing bonus of $1.5 million.
  • He will be paid $1 million in base salary this season, a figure that is fully guaranteed.
  • That gives him $2.5 million in guaranteed money.
  • After the season, Tate will receive a roster bonus that pays him $46,875 for every game he’s active. If he’s active for 16 games, he’ll receive $750,000, which is the maximum bonus. This clause clearly is a protection for the team against Tate’s injuries. He has been injured in every season he’s played.
  • The roster bonus is counted in an interesting way against the salary cap. Likely to be earned money counts against the cap. Because Tate played in 14 games in 2013, it’s considered likely he’ll play in 14 in 2014. That means $656,250 of the roster bonus counts against the 2014 salary cap (14 games times $46,875).
  • Tate is due a base salary of $2.2 million in 2015.
  • He also is due the same roster bonus.
Tate’s salary cap cost in 2014 is $2.406 million -- $750,000 for the prorated signing bonus ($1.5 million divided by two years on the deal), $1 million for the base salary and $656,250 for the roster bonus. His salary cap cost in 2015 is $2.95 million.

The deal is extremely team friendly, but Tate will get a great opportunity to prove he can and should be a starting running back. If he succeeds he’ll cash in two years from now, or in a year if he’s good enough to demand an extension from the Browns.

It’s a contract that works for both sides.

Blount's gone now. At least we have a couple of weeks to get someone up to speed.
I can't see another team taking a shot. Nothing but immaturity since college. He has talent but no greater than an average back. The weed smoking incident and now this adding to the other events throughout his career. I'm guessing he's done.

The bye gives them time to come up with....something, I guess. The problem is that the "somethings" that are out there aren't very appealing and the extra week isn't likely to change it.

That said, if Blount was that much of a distraction/bad influence then they didn't have a choice here.

Is Mitchell's contract structured such that he can be cut without a lot of dead money?

edit: not suggeting we should cut him only because of being bad a twitter. being bad at football is another reason.

If they cut him after the season, they save a 2 million roster bonus owed to him on the 5th day of the 2015 league year, but he's guaranteed the prorated balance of his 4.8M signing bonus (guaranteed money) . So, it would only cost the team 1.8M in real money, but 3.8M in cap dollars next season.

Thus, if they roster him for another year and then cut him, he still counts 2.85M against the 2016 cap and they have to pay the roster bonus. I think it's possible he gets cut after the season, otherwise it's likely we're stuck with him for at least 2 more seasons beyond this one.

I don't see them cutting him unless we draft a safety in the top 2 rounds next year or get one through FA. We have Mitchell who is currently underperforming (a better pass rush would help a lot) and Polamalu who is old and owed a lot of money next year. I'm not sure how Shamarko is doing at safety since he's hurt all the time and doesn't see many defensive packages.

I think that if a safety gets let go next year it's Polamalu, not Mitchell. Purely because of cap savings and age.

I thought it was nearly a given that Troy was going to retire after this season.

Little late with the news but just read that Steelers south (Cards) signed Josh Mauro off the practice squad. And now the Chiefs are supposedly going to steal Nick Williams. Maybe the Steelers should have promoted one of those guys and dumped Thomas.

Ike Taylor and Jarvis Jones cleared to return. We'll see what happens. No need to rush Jarvis back and Ike might take an extra week.

And right on cue, Kiesel gets hurt and is likely done. :(

Obviously Ben was off yesterday, really bad. The defense played like crap after the 1st quarter though. Maybe they were better off without Ike cause he was lost yesterday.

We're back to making key mistakes that cost us momentum and the game. If a couple things went differently then the whole game could have changed. Martavis dropped a TD pass, Ben sailed a handful of passes that would have been big gains, Ben had an unlucky pick from a batted pass, a couple blown coverages that left wide open TDs. If any of these didn't happen (Mainly Ben's pick deep in saints territory) then we could have tied or won that game. But they did happen because our team looked woefully unprepared.

We had more time than them to prepare, and still couldn't make it happen. Their run defense is horrible, but their pass defense isn't much better. But we still couldn't move the ball against them when we needed to. Luckily Cleveland and Baltimore lost, so we still have a chance if we can sweep the Bengals. The Bengals almost lost to Tampa sunday so they aren't some powerhouse at the moment. But at this point even if we squeak into the playoffs I don't see us making a run. We really need to win 3-4 of our next 4 games and get a streak going like we did against the texans/colts/baltimore earlier in the season.

And yet, with Cleveland and the Ravens losing, we are still in charge of our own destiny.
Yeah but do you believe this team is capable of winning 4 in a row? The defense is atrocious.
If they play like they did against the Colts and Ravens, sure. If they play like they did the last couple weeks, not a chance.
And that is the problem. They might have one or two good games in them but it is tough seeing them do that for three or four. The NFL has a few good teams right now (Patriots, Packers, Broncos and Eagles maybe) but the rest of the NFL is so schizophrenic that it is almost impossible to figure out winners in any given week. W-L record certainly is no help.

My guess is the Steelers go 2-2 and finish 9-7, probably just missing the playoffs.

Yup I think they'll split with Cincy and beat either Atlanta or KC. This team is not consistent to win all 4 and I would be surprised if they could pull out 3. That is not an easy schedule to end the season. The defense is just playing terrible at the worst possible time.

I really don't blame Lebeau. They are really going to have to poor the draft and FA into defense and get Ben extended. I don't want to already start talking about the offseason and as optimistic as I've been this team would shock me if they made the playoffs and went deep into them. Hopefully Jarvis comes around because I don't think Worilds will be back and haven't had much pass rush from the LB's. Moats needs to be retained as he has been a serviceable reserve.

I'm not sure 10 wins gets them in. I feel that they have to sweep the Bungles to get in.

Won today and get the Bengals at home week 17 so it looks like they could control their own destiny. Win and in. Dolphins didn't help today though. Ravens seems to have the path to the spot. Jags, Texans and Browns left for them. I could see them winning out while Bengals and Steelers lose at least one each.

Of course they control their own destiny. All they have to do is win 3 games and there will be a playoff game at Heinz. The problem is that after they have a game like this, they often lay an egg.

And it's the Falcons that worry me most. They're playing decently now and are playing the Packers tomorrow. They lose and really need a win next week at ome vs Pittsburgh. Classic setup for a loss.

Actually it's the Steelers that worry me. They've proven that they are talented enough to beat good teams. Why do we need to worry about a "classic setup for a loss" to an inferior team? The top teams don't lose games like that and that's the problem.

I hope the Falcons have a reason to play tough next week. This iteration of the Steelers plays better when they have to take the opponent seriously. If they've had the opportunity to take a team for granted for the past 3 years, or so, they haven't passed one up yet.

A lot of that is on the coaching and that scares me to death
