✦✦✦Official 2014 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (1 Viewer)

Brown just took off. When Archer is on the field all eyes are on him and it opens everything up. Hope there is a lot of that this year.

Anyone else watching the game.... Figured this thread would be hopping. Porter first one to great Shazier on the pick. Pretty sweet.

Not live here and I was out hanging so I'm recording it tomorrow on NFLN.

Liking what I'm reading but gonna avoid "spoilers" for now.

Well without spoilers for game plays:Ben in midseason form

Offense looks good, Archer is fast (already known)

Shazier adds a new dimension to the D and the line looked moderately better than last game

Landry Jones still sucks

A little surprised by that last one. Mind you, Steelers are in trouble if Ben goes down for any amount of time but it seemed from reports and the first game that he's showing improvement over last year.

Shazier is even better than I thought. This guy is going to be a monster if he can stay healthy.
I just saw him make the leaping INT as I read this.He was talking about him in the context of a different position, but independent scout Frank Coyle called Shazier the best WLB prospect since recent Hall of Fame inductee Derrick Brooks.

Future All-Pro potential, imo.

Just getting started. That tackle on the first series by Troy made me smile. :)

Shazier coves a lot of ground and has a nose for the ball. Love it!

I'm a little surprised at all the things along these lines that I'm hearing AFTER the draft, when I heard very little -- well, NOTHING -- along those lines going in. On draft day, for like half an hour, everyone thought they reached, then suddenly everyone was yelling "steal!"

Not evaluating anything in saying that. Just an observation. Don't remember a guy whose perceived value around the league seemed to be so well hidden heading into draft day.

Looks like a player.

Shazier 11 solo tackles (2 on ST) in 25 minutes of play, plus the INT.

Landry Jones is atrocious. I can't believe this guy cost a 3rd and a 4th rounder.

My only real negative watching the game now is that Mike Mitchell need to calm the hell down. Already got 15 yard penalty (yeah it is a stupid rule but still) and still didn't stop barking. Need all the secondary help we can get.

Still not overly sold on Marcus Wheaton as our #2 WR and we haven't seen enough of Lance Moore in this preseason. Hopefully Lance becomes that possession receiver we need.

DeCastro is blowing people up! Right side of the oline looks good.

On the TD pass to Wheaton, Beachum got into his backpedal so nicely and did a great job pushing the defender around the pocket. Nice to see both tackles on that play take their men around Ben.

Ya I agree... I can't remember having a pocket perfectly form around him. Nice to see him step in and not have to scramble to make the deep throw. Through the draft, FA, and coaching hires this team had a lot of potential just has to put it together.

Can someone talk me off the ledge? a healthy OLine and playmakers all over the defense now ... I think the Steelers are going to tear up the AFCN this year.

The only reason I'd say to back away from the ledge is because I think there's a very real chance the AFCN is a total bloodbath this year. You could use descriptives not too different from "a healthy OLine and playmakers all over the defense" to describe every team in there. Luckily, at least with the Browns, you can also add, "and QB will probably be a total cluster ####."

The Steelers LB corp is going to be soooo much better than last year. R. Shazier and A. Moats, the return of S. Spence, J. Jones in his 2nd year, added to J. Worilds and L. Timmons... all of a sudden, this doesn't look like a weakness any longer.

And the DLine looks better too, loved the play where Tuitt made a tackle 24 yards down field... showed excellent hustle on that play.

If the online can stay healthy, the offense has a chance to be really explosive... really looking forward to the season.

I'm usually a fairly pessimistic person, but I really like how this team is coming together. Troy may actually be able to play his position. The linebackers will be much improved. The Defensive line may not be the wasteland we thought. If the o - line stays healthy, I really like their chances.

On another site we did a mock draft and Shazier was a first round pick. Then draft day picks were coming over Twitter well before the announcement on TV so I said:

Me:And Steelers fans fly off the handle for sure.

Pick announced

Other guy: Good pick by the Stillers there....

Me: Worilds, Timmons, Shazier, Jones. That's a fairly impressive left to right LB group.

Go back to May 8 in this thread for a good laugh. FUJB at his best for sure.

where's irish when you need him?
Thought the first team looked really good on both sides of the ball but the secondary is still a big concern. Shmarko is looking good though.

The Steelers starting offensive line is looking real good, better than it has looked for a very long time. That said, when was the last time the Steelers did not sustain several major injuries on the o-line? The second unit has been a bit underwhelming so far so that is also a concern.

Suisham has missed a short FG and an XP in two games. Not sure if the new holder/LS are an issue but whatever it is it needs to be fixed.

Landry Jones looked awful, even when playing with the 1st team. Unless he shows something soon I don't see the point in taking up a roster spot for him. Keep an extra LB, DB or defensive lineman instead. They can sign Jones back to the practice squad later cause I really doubt anyone picks he up. Even if they do there is likely better sitting on the WW.

Anyway, I get fired up at the prospect of a bad### LB showing up at one of the traditional defensive powerhouse teams. Just makes all seem right with the world.

Sounds like the kid on the Ravens is shaping up to be a player, too. Ought to add fuel to that rivalry for the next several years, which is just another thing to love, AFAIC.

Good stuff.

I was thinking about the line too, how bad the second unit has looked... First of all, hopefully there are no injuries but if there are I would hope it's only one guy. Subbing in one guy like Wallace or Adams won't be the clusterF we see with the entire 2nd line being out there. The starters can compensate for the backup. I wouldn't want Adams on the left though which to me makes Beachum a can't get hurt guy. Gilbert is playing up to his draft spot but not certain he can go to the left.

Suisham has some sort of weird issue between the 30s. It was documented somewhere and with this test (is it more than that?) of having the PAT out past 30 yards it could get interesting.

Shamarko looks great. Golden made some plays. Ike and Cortez will be okay, the backups are capable but won't strike fear in anyone.

Landry looked really bad with that 2nd line in. Under constant pressure and he didn't handle it well. Doesn't have the mobility like Grads. He really only had that first series with the first line and threw that ugly pick. I see no reason for them to keep him on the 53. PS at best, free up a spot for one of those linebackers like So'oto.

A dose of realism (pessimism?) for yinz: the Steelers did not adequately address their significant needs at nose tackle or at cornerback. While the LBs look solid, who is going to be covering especially on the outside? A team that can protect their QB or a team with a mobile QB will be able to tear apart the secondary. And if you can't stop the run up the middle, the D looks even worse. On offense, the WR corps is awfully thin and I am not sold on the rookie yet. Just imagine, heaven forbid, if Antonio Brown gets hurt. All in all it looks like a boom/bust team. With Ben at the helm, I give them a good chance to do better than average (9-7 or 10-6) but this is not quite a great team yet.

Shazier on his way to make all those draft day haters in here look like fools
It was a surprising pick. I defended it but I understood people's frustration. I was only lukewarm to it too and wanted Kyle Fuller. Now that he looks like the 2nd coming of Urlacher, I'm not sure he wasn't their guy all along.

I don't know if some people thought of Shazier as a reach, but it can be hard to know how much momentum a prospect has leading up to the draft. He had the 42" VJ at the combine, addressed size concerns by showing up at 235+ at his pro day, than ran a sub-4.4, so his stock was probably surging leading up to the draft. Later, there were reports that DAL would have taken Shazier ahead of OL Martin if he had been there. We may be saying Shazier was a steal in the near future.

Had a feeling (as did many others) this was coming but Ed B. is saying deal is close for Keisel+Steelers.

Just a note to mention I'm very specifically targeting the Steelers D/ST in my big draft of the year, taking place this weekend. The thinking being no deeper than that I ought to be able to trade them for a tidy profit after they score me about a million points against the week one clown show that the Browns QB corps is shaping up to be.

Well that was quick

Steelers source confirms Brett Keisel has agreed to terms, will be in the rotation on the defensive line in 2014.

Word was that his locker was never cleaned out. Great signing for depth, experience and leadership.

They just lost Dockett to an ACL. My guess is that the interest was legit and that it just forced the Steelers' hand. I think they were planning on re-signing Keisel all along but we're trying to avoid eating up any of their limited cap space until they could determine whom they could or wanted to extend. Once Arizona came knocking, Keisel's agent probably told them it was time to ##### or get off the pot.

Wonder if he'll still show up in a tractor even though it's a few weeks late.
Doubt it but would be cool if he could. Camp broke a few days ago so he'd have to ride a tractor to the facility in Pittsburgh. Maybe he can get a construction company to lend him a backhoe for a short trip.
