✦✦✦Official 2014 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (1 Viewer)

Anyone else super happy about being flexed to sunday night? Especially considering how poorly Andy Dalton plays in prime time.
I'm happy. 1) Should really pump up the team and the home crowd to be in primetime. 2) This year they've reversed the recent trend of blowing it in primetime. 3) Means I can spend the daytime out doing something other than parked in front of the TV.

Just happy you were off on this. There were certainly times early on I was doubting my convictions.

Now have to wonder with previous experience and glowing success if Haley will be a candidate for HC openings...
I don't see it. His communication/demeanor is too rough for the HC spot.
I believe he's improved upon that.

If Denver loses out and Pitt wins next week, do we have a shot at a bye?
I think Denver would get it based on strength of schedule. We would have the same conference record and same record against common opponents. My assumption is their strength of schedule is better than ours but i'm not certain of that. That damn loss to the Jets would haunt us.

You are correct. The highest the Steelers can get is the 3rd seed.

It's critical that the Steelers win next Sunday. Watching Denver right now and they look extremely beatable. This isn't the best Steelers team but if they win next week, I really think they could make a run.

I'm torn on who I'd rather face in the second round if we get that far. Denver looks like crap right now but they can throw deep, which is invariably what kills us. Patriots play more of a short-passing game, like KC does, and lacks the vertical threat that usually causes problems. I actually think we may match up better with NE, but Denver looks like they peaked earlier in the year. Tough call, although I suspect most would rather face the Broncos.

The Steelers have stunk on ice in both those venues for a while now, so I can't say I'd feel very confident in them playing in either one of them. And regardless of how "vertical vs. horizontal" the Patriots offense may be, there isn't a single Steeler on this current defense that can take away Gronkowski.

Because of that, I guess I'd go with Denver. The Steelers have shown a better pass rush of late, and we all know if you hit Peyton in da mouf he turns into a finger-pointing girl.

They need to get past round one first before I worry about it.

Nobody can neutralize Gronk, least of all the Steelers. He'll run amok, no doubt. However, Denver's offense features a vastly superior complement of receivers. If Manning has time to throw, and he likely will, he's got so many weapons to use to tear apart our God-awful secondary. Gronk is more of a weapon than Julius Thomas but I like the CBs' ability to cover LaFell and Edelman more than I do Demaryius Thomas and Sanders.

Ok so if we win, we are likely getting either S.D or Baltimore in round 1. If we lose, we are probably going to Cincy. Not a terrible outcome either way.

I'm worried much more about Brady than I am Manning at this stage. I think I'm also more worried about the Patriots defense. Regardless, I think the Steelers have a decent shot against either.

What? Shazier can neutralize him!!

Just kidding. But I do think it would be mostly up to our ILBs to stop him since no one in our secondary is big enough to handle him.

Yeah but how many teams legitimately have an answer for Gronk? You don't beat the Patriots by stopping Gronk. You have to find another way.

Our main chance would be if our front 4 can get pressure on Brady and hit him over and over while 7 drop into coverage. If we can just keep hitting him he won't be the same in the 2nd half. He gets rattled.

Gotta want that home game though. I think a home game against the Chargers would be our best bet.

Ideally our path will be:
Home against SD

At Denver

Home against Cincy/Indy

SB against the Cowboys

I think that Seattle or GB is going to represent the NFC, but I'd rather have our offense against the Cowboys Def especially since Murray has to be running on fumes at this point.

Yup you're right. I would prefer going to Indy actually. I think their defense is atrocious.
That would be a fun matchup for us flyover staters. A couple gunslingers duking it out in the playoffs always makes good TV.

Bell named MVP. Well deserved.
Good sign for your offense when your HOF-bound QB has the best season of his career and your top WR finishes with the 2nd most catches in NFL history and neither is the TEAM MVP.

Would love to beat the Bengals and win the division but a first round matchup vs the Colts might be better than the Ravens or Chargers (more likely than the Ravens).

Home playoff game in Pittsburgh is always better IMO. Also, if we make it past round 1, my preference is to face Denver over New England.

Good points. Ravens-Steelers is always so brutal though. Chargers seem to pick it up late in the season (although losing right now to the Chiefs with a backup qb).

If Flacco is not pressured, the Smiths will torch the secondary. Harbaugh will have no trouble firing up his team for a rematch at Pgh after that brutal beating administered by the Steelers some weeks ago.

Bell and Brown have been outstanding. Yet Ben is a legit MVP candidate and rarely gets mentioned for such an accolade. The guy has proven more valuable than the duo of QBs taken ahead of him in that draft class---Eli and Rivers. Rivers cemented his legacy today as still unequipped to win the big game when practically handed a customized invitation.

I'd say it's probably unlikely that Bell plays on Saturday.

If that proves to be the case, we're going to need to sign someone. No way we can roll into the playoffs with Archer and Harris as the only 2 tailbacks. What are the options?

IIRC, Ladarius Perkins is the only RB remaining on the practice squad. Ray Rice is out there. So, there's that. Any other FAs of note that may be able to come in and contribute?

Ben Tate is available. I think Andre Brown is a FA.
