San Bernardino Victim Died After Shielding Co-Worker and Saving Her Life: 'I Got You'San Bernardino shooting victim Shannon Johnson used his body to shield co-worker Denise Peraza as bullets started flying on Wednesday, CNN reports. Johnson was one of the 14 people who died in the attack, but Peraza lived and is now able to share the details of Johnson's heroic actions.

In a statement released to CNN, Peraza, who was shot in the back and is now recovering at home, honors the "amazing man" who sacrificed his own life to save hers.

"I will always remember his left arm wrapped around me, holding me as close as possible next to him behind that chair," the statement reads. "And amidst all the chaos, I'll always remember him saying these three words, 'I got you.' "

Peraza also said that Johnson was a selfless person who "always brought a smile to everyone's face in the office with his lively stories about his hometown back in Georgia."

According to ABC7, Johnson, 45, was a Los Angeles resident who had worked as an environmental health specialist for 10 years.

"A resident of Koreatown, Shannon rose before dawn each morning to get to his job as a San Bernardino County health inspector. He shared a home with his girlfriend, Mandy Pifer, a longtime member of the Mayor's Crisis Response Team," Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement, ABC7 reports.

Pifer also spoke to CNN in memory of Johnson, who she says "everybody" will miss terribly.

"Shannon Hilliard Johnson was covered in tattoos, he had a big bushy beard, but he was a kitty cat. He was the kindest person anyone has ever met," Pifer says. "He loved people and animals – just everybody. He just loved people. He loved telling stories."

Pifer shares that Johnson was friends with co-worker Syed Rizwan Farook, one of the shooters.

"He liked Syed. Syed's religion was really important to him. Everybody's religion there was very important to them, and Shannon just wanted everybody to know that every religion is important," she says.

Pifer also recalls how she and Johnson had actually discussed how they would react in a similar situation to Wednesday's attack.

"I was always, 'I am ducking and covering,' and he said, 'No, screw that, I would charge, I would go after that gun,' " Pifer says. "He was not afraid to die and so I knew, if there was a gunman, Shannon went after him, he wasn't hiding anywhere."

She adds, "He had an incredible soul. It's a loss for humanity. He gave out good vibes, so I hope through all of this ... that we can keep those good vibes going and just reverberate them."

Their talks were usually about religion, Pifer said. Johnson told her that Farook would get very upset if offended.

Visited our longest running customer last week. He has a different theory. He claims that the whole Middle East is a cesspool because of the women. Says they are mostly hairy, smelly, and ugly. So many of these men that have 3-4 nasty ugly wives that they have sex with just get angrier and angrier. Said when they finally may find a hot mistress to bang, she gets arrested or killed, which then makes them even angrier. we need to do more to make it difficult for terrorists ay home (both domestic and foreign) to carry out attacks like CO Springs and San Bernardino

reiterate again that people like ISIS do not represent mainstream Islam and we can't allow ourselves to be drawn into that narrative, as it ultimately serves ISIS's goals

will likely hammer Republicans/NRA for blocking legislation to keep people on terror watch list from buying guns

will probably also talk about the larger issues around gun regulation

It's perfectly fine to report suspicious behavior. But what is suspicious behavior? If one of the components to that behavior is the appearance of the person doing it (Middle Eastern in this discussion) then it's not fine.

In other words if you report a Middle Eastern looking person doing something you regard as suspicious, but would not report a white person that was doing the EXACT SAME THING, then you're acting in a bigoted manner, and it's not OK.

In this case someone saw a few Middle eastern men enter an apartment .. and now feels guilty because he feels he should have reported it..

I just got around to reading this thread and I generally try to not post in these threads but you bring up a good point. While I can understand people being concerned about things that appear suspicious, what about personal liberty, freedom of religion and freedom in general? I live in metro Detroit and one of its suburbs is Dearborn, which has one of the largest if not the largest population of Muslims and others from the Middle East. I feel totally safe being there and cant recall ever hearing of any major incidents involving Muslims (if something did I dont recall it).

Basically, I cant stand anything related to racial profiling. Things like databases for certain groups of people is just plain wrong. I know people may be concerned but where does the line cross into freedom and personal liberty?

Gun control shouldn't have anything to do with a speech on ISIS unless he's going to talk about legislation that you mention. New gun legislation is going to prevent anything and this recent shooting was in California, not exactly a place that's "easy" to get a gun compared to some states.

I think if he politicizes this instead of dealing with the enemy ISIS, he comes out of this NOT looking like a leader of the country.

It's perfectly fine to report suspicious behavior. But what is suspicious behavior? If one of the components to that behavior is the appearance of the person doing it (Middle Eastern in this discussion) then it's not fine.

In other words if you report a Middle Eastern looking person doing something you regard as suspicious, but would not report a white person that was doing the EXACT SAME THING, then you're acting in a bigoted manner, and it's not OK.

In this case someone saw a few Middle eastern men enter an apartment .. and now feels guilty because he feels he should have reported it..

Reported what.. some middle eastern guys going into an apartment.. How many middle eastern people can gather before it becomes "suspicious" .. 2, 3.. ???

As I stated above, middle eastern people soon will not be able to gather for Birthday Parties, to watch Sports, or gather in any groups larger then 2 before people feel they need to report "suspicious" activity..

I just got around to reading this thread and I generally try to not post in these threads but you bring up a good point. While I can understand people being concerned about things that appear suspicious, what about personal liberty, freedom of religion and freedom in general? I live in metro Detroit and one of its suburbs is Dearborn, which has one of the largest if not the largest population of Muslims and others from the Middle East. I feel totally safe being there and cant recall ever hearing of any major incidents involving Muslims (if something did I dont recall it).

Basically, I cant stand anything related to racial profiling. Things like databases for certain groups of people is just plain wrong. I know people may be concerned but where does the line cross into freedom and personal liberty?

I've been very clear - I'm not sure what the solution there is, or if there even is one. My criticism of Obama is that he's not a leader, and that's been pretty clear on this issue.

I applaud him for his comments, however, there are way too many soft targets (pretty much everything is).

If he's going to make gun control a center piece of his speech on ISIS tomorrow, that will look extremely political and will be dismissed as a partisan speech.
