18 game season (1 Viewer)

I echo CC's sentiments - 18 game season is crazy . . .

the main point is that reducing the preseason by the two games does not really negate that much contact since most of the key players play only about 6 quarters of preseason as it is . . .

and they talk about OTAs being reduced?? Do they even tackle in those??

owners are crazy . . .

Amazing this is happening considering fans don't even want it.

NFL is already one of the more random sports out there..... this will make things even more crazy.

If someone would've offered me 1000-1 odds before the season that peyton hillis and brandon lloyd would be top 5 players at their position and that Randy Moss would go the entire season un-injured and garner less than 700 yards.... well they would've made a fortune off me... i would've loaded up on the bet.

And I wouldn't trust hillis or lloyd to even be decent next year let alone stars... and I wouldn't be surprised if Moss gets his head right and comes back and finishes in the top 10.

Also how does Dwayne Bowe go from completely droppable to monster statistical star as if the light switch got turned on when his results from the first 4 weeks had nothing to do with injury/opportunity.

If you think FFL is pretty luck based now (and you should think it is) it will be 25% more based on luck after this schedule bullcrap.

drafting in early august is dumb too

Injuries influence every season, regardless of the length. I have no problem trading two worthless weeks of preseason for two weeks of real football.

there will be even more injuries next year . . .
 Players get hurt in preseason games too. Heck, sometimes they get hurt when there's no games at all. In some cases, the extra two weeks may allow a player a chance to get healthier before the playoffs. Like I said, injuries are part of the game.

ok...so by that argument they should go back to the 14 game season right?sure there will be more injuries in an 18 game season vs a 16 game season, but i don't think the rate of injuries will be significantly more than whatever the average # of injuries per week is this year or in recent years.

there has to be a limit at some point - you can't just keep increase the amount of games played and say "well injuries will happen no matter what" . . . of course if they dropped back to 14 there would be less injuries . . .

I bet injuries were a factor back when they used to play twelve-game seasons.
probably - have to ask someone older than me . . .but this game is a good example - BOTH teams are playing with players that even diehard NFL fans had never heard of several months ago . . .

Its not for the fans, its for the tv money.
I don't even want to watch more games.we've got a 17 week season... that was more than enough.I would've actually been more excited if they'd said they were going to go back to a 14 game season than expand to 18.Basically you'll get ONE more ffl week in... i bet it's going to become standard to cut the final 2 weeks off due to good teams clinching and resting even earlier since the margin of division wins could be greater.Regardless of what they do I'm slowly but surely moving away from the game.. it's not as fun for me as it was 5-10 years ago...

I think the injury angle is a bit over-stated. The extra bye week will make a HUGE differance. I'd venture to guess that the average star player misses less than a 1/10 of an extra game/season....and may actually miss LESS time on aggregate.

They will certainly miss less % wise. THE EXTRA BYE IS A HUGE DIFFERANCE.

Funny how USFL guys making peanuts managed to make it through 18 games almost 30 years ago. I guess they were just tougher than today's NFL players.

I think the 18 game season is going to necessitate larger rosters, bigger practice squads, and new rules for injured players so that they can return not just from PUP, but also from I.R.

Right now if you are injured in week 1 or 2 and are looking to be out through week 12 you are done. Teams just can't hold a spot that long and the season is over. With an 18 game season featuring 2 byes your eam may still have 8 games to go if you can get back after week 12.

I can't wait to see how this is resolved. Certainly those teams on th ebottom will be unhappy if good teams can stockpile players. Frankly a salary capcontrols that problem if implemented correctly.

:goodposting: I'm fine with the way things are, but I don't want to hear players/coaches ##### about 2 more games, when coaches have their players on the field throwing bombs and getting sacked when their team is down by 25 with 4 min.

FF is not about skill anymore. The game now is meant for the masses. So much info makes it easy to play. My 19 year old daughter got into my work league and is dominating in her first year ever. Before the draft the only NFL players she knew were Brett Favre, Sanchez and a couple of Detroit Lions. I laughed at her team because she waited so long to get RB, and ended up with Arian Foster, Hillis and Forte. She drafted Calvin Johnson in the first because he is a Lion, Mark Sanchez and Orton as her QBs because she thought Sanchez is cute and she likes Orton because her friend goes to Purdue. The computer auto-picks her Bowe because she waited too long. Then she picks up Lloyd after his first big week because CBS had him as a must add, she had no idea who he was or what position he played. I am not laughing anymore.
