18 Overrated Beers - via Deadspin (1 Viewer)

Banquet Beer is a good one... I had a couple over the last year, was surprised by it each time.

Preach, Brother.

It hits the nail on the head:

Coors Banquet: Plain yellow-can Coors is by far the best of its breed. Most serious beer folk dismiss all Bud/Miller/Coors as the same #### in different cans, but this particular #### is superior.
The list include 4 of my other go-to beers: Guinness Extra Stout, S.A. Boston Lager, Fuller's ESB & S.S. Oatmeal Stout.

Five damned fine beers

Does Oatmeal Stout lower your cholesterol if you drink it everyday?

I don't worry about things like that.

Most of the beers here are just softballs, it's too easy because they are just mass produced for the masses:

  • High Life
  • Blue Moon
  • Killian's
  • Heinie
  • Yuengling
  • Corona
  • Kentucky Bourbon Barrel
  • Stella
  • Rolling Rock
  • Moosehead
The others are:

Bass

Magic Hat 9

Local brewery flagship (for me here that's Abita Amber)

Red Stripe

Shiner Bock

Rasputin

Anchor Steam

I don't get what they're getting at here. If you're at a ballgame or at a crappy bar you're gonna get something. In those situations everything off the top list is in play for me. If I have better choices I say no to them. The ones I really hate in that group though are Yuengling, Moosehead & KBB. The guy's got a point about Heineken, but when it's that or Coors Light....

Out of the bottom list I have to agree with Magic Hat 9. I don't get it, I think I'd rather order the High Life than MH9. I've also had enough Abita Amber to last a lifetime. Abita, thanks for what you've done for local and micro brewing but I've moved on from Amber and almost everything not in a big bottle now. Everything else off that bottom group is Ok with me.

Nice to see someone acknowledge Yuengling's overratedness.
And yet not explain himself. I dont think anyone outside of southeastern PA and southern Jersey drinks the stuff. So how could it be overrated?
Further south its big too and I don't get it. We used to buy this for a buck a six pack back in the day if we couldnt afford our regular brands. New bottle, same shrill

Yuengling made a huge push here in Massachusetts, but after bumping craft beers out of taps at many local bars, it hasn't been able to sustain the initial momentum. I think people realized that once it wasn't the "new big thing," it just wasn't all that interesting.

I was on a big Fat Tire kick for a while, but after getting a case of it brought back for me earlier this year, I'm not as big on it. Still good, but I'm not ga ga about it any more.

The only beer I physically wasn't able to finish was a Samuel Adams Double Bock. Maybe I just got a bad batch, but I remember bringing the last of the 6-pack to a Pats game so I wouldn't be upset if I had to throw it out before crossing Route 1.

I would consider myself a "fringe" beer snob. I have friends who are way over the top about it, and if they bring back something interesting, I definitely can appreciate it. But I won't drive hundreds of miles just to sample the latest session beer or whatever.

I like your taste in beer, Christo.

Not sure if you've tried it but as a recommendation I suggest Pipeline Porter by Kona when you can find it. It's seasonal so it only comes out in the late fall/winter but my goodness is it good. I'm marking down the days for it's return. It may be right up your alley.

I've only had their Longboard and Big Wave.

We get the Kona sample packs. I don't think any of them are bad.
