2006 Vin Scully appreciation thread (1 Viewer)

 Him and Mr. Hearn growing up spoiled the #### out of me, hell we even had Joe Torre calling the Angel games. :banned:

Blabbityblabbityblabbity.
shame on you.
I'm sorry, but I can't stand that doddering old fool.Bill King >>>>>>> Vin Scully

Edit: Maddux getting off to an awesome start is great. Can't believe he was a FA in my leeg.

Hell, I remember listening to Vin call Dodger games back when I lived in California in the 70's....The Spirit Of 76 was a big sponser at the time, and they used to give out little orange car antenna balls with "76" on them at the games....

To me, he is the ONLY voice of the Dodgers. Even met him once when I was around 10 years old around 1980. He signed my Dodger windbreaker on windbreaker night.

All of my aces are waiver wire pickups:Maddux, Glavine, Tim Worrell (thought I was screwed when Gagne AND T. Jones went down). I had Kenny Rogers but dumped him in between his two solid performances.

Contreras is looking like a great late round selection and Lackey has put together two great starts in a row. Unfortunately, none of this came make up for the first round BUST known as Johan Santana. VBD is garbage in baseball and should have known better than to think "grab the SP that is head and shoulders above the rest of the league".

Still need a "holds" guy terribly (haven't had one yet this season). Politte was garbage and Alfonseca can't hold games that his team can't win. I just dropped him for Todd Coffey (who has a few chances against Florida).

Watched some of the "Hawk" earlier this evening. :puke:

Vin
Funny you should say that because I listened to "Hawk" just the other day. And I thought to myself, don't get upset at how bad he is, just let it go or laugh, even. After the second "HE GONE", I wanted to cut his tongue out and shove it up his ###. So yeah, I lasted 1 and a third.

I admire Scully for sure. Definitely one of a kind. I don't think anyone can do what he does. That being said, I just don't like what he does.

LOFL at seeing "haters (nipsey) stay out" and also seeing him with the last post.

My favorite announcer in all of sports...followed by Trevor Denman #2.

Both not only believe that the sport is much bigger than they are, but they try to make it that way.

Scully calling a game on TV is white noise. Perfect for sleeping. Granted, if the Dodgers are in the World Series and hit a game winning homer in game one, he may punch the "gone" in "she is gone". Other than that, he never deviates from the box fan on low setting that he is.

Exactly. Which is why I can't stand all the announcers who try to slam my head against a wall about something I have just witnessed myself. They are so consumed by taking part in the moment, they ruin it. :hophead: Thanks Vin, for the humility.

I think there's a middle ground there between Vin and Vitale.

Probably the worst analysis I've ever read. Scully can paint word pictures unlike any other. Pure gold.

So let him to do only radio. I have eyes.

Maddux was working late in the game tonight -- just a masterful performance -- and Vin is relaying that to the audience by comparing him to a teacher with a blackboard (can't remember exactly). Anyway, moments later, a younger player at the plate just gets schooled, with Maddux painting the inside corner with his patented tailing fastball. The kid just stared at it...and Maddux strolls off the mound to the dugout. Lesson over.

What I love about that stuff is that Vin's sense of the game is uncanny. It's like he's watching a replay at times. Oh, I realize most of us knew what was happening, but very few could tie it in so well, and time it like that. The other part I can't get enough of is that you would have never known he was the Dodger announcer. He will acknowledge and embrace excellence no matter what the uniform.

Who really wants to hear 162 games of homerism and bias? I want the picture painted as accurately as possible, thank you.

:goodposting: :goodposting: :goodposting: He's been covering the same team for 50 years, and if you never had heard him before you'd have no idea.

Really makes guys like the White Sox announcers look like the goobers that they are.

As someone else said, he's worth the price of the Extra Innings package by himself.

And away they go...

"But Bill Shoemaker and Ferdinand are coming like an EXPRESS TRAIN!""The little Snow Chief reaches down deep and finds more!"

"And Alysheba just EXUDING class out here..."

I grew up listening to Vin Scully. He's the gold standard as far as I am concerned.
I grew up with him as well, and I lived in Tempe (Phoenix suburb)! Apparently the Phoenix market was considered Far East LA back in the 70's and 80's (perhaps even further back than that), so we got all the Dodger games.

I never listened to Ernie Harwell on a regular basis like I did with Scully (WS games as a kid + now at work), but when a couple of networks had him on for guest commentary, he seemed like he hadn't missed a beat. Only a small sample size, but he may have been my favorite had I heard him more often.

Scully very close to that.

Josh Lewin, Hawk, well...pretty much most announcers around MLB =
