Dropped from 23 to 48 because of Bryant last night

I have tried to score each team and this is my UNOFFICIAL list for Week 14. I am still working out bugs and tweaks, but should be pretty close (My defense scoring may be off). I will need to compare to the official numbers tomorrow to see if my spreadhseet is working correctly. Does anyone know of a resource where I can get the player points real time rather than looking each one up on NFL gamebooks? Thanks!

There is a scoring glitch where it doesn't catch yardage correctly if they end up with a negative, but that amounts to very little error for an early summary. Great job on your scoring work! Did you script a way to input the teams, or did you download them all manually? I started a project like yours last year, but abandoned it after about 25 entries because it was taking forever. If you have an automated team download method, I already have a scoring algorithm setup in excel.

I have a 0.5% chance to make it. I had three guys (Well Steve Smith twice) get tackled at the one costing me 18.2 points.

And of course this week, I score 213.

Put me in for the bad beat award as well. Week 11 I missed the cut by .60 and would have passed every week since. This week I get 228.25 with Westy, Slaton, Bryant, Marshall, Steve Smith, and Walter.

I downloaded them manually for now but will work on a way to script it in for the future. A few years ago, FBG gave everyone a file a the beginning of the contest that had everyone's team in it which made everything real easy (HINT, HINT). Back then, they also did not use a flex player which made the excel calculations a lot easier.This did take a lot longer than anticipated, but once I started, I couldn't stop. My scoring algorithm in excel works great (took a little longer to figure out the flex position), it was the manual player scoring entries that accounted for my point total inaccuracies. If I can rectify that, then my data will be 100% accurate. Now that FBG is a lot faster on their publishing of totals, I might not invest a lot more time in this. Several years ago (when I was paying attention), they would wait until Thursday to publish the contest results and that was just WAY to long to wait.

A very interesting point about the tendency to rate studs too high in the projections. I doubt that is the case. The actual performances of the studs probably have no greater statistical variance than for other players. I think we should keep in mind that the Dodds numbers are not created for this game. For example, it makes good sense to project a stud RB to do 20 points because some days he will do 24 and others only 16 (I am sure that Drinen can supply the appropriate bell curve). If you have to make a weekly lineup choice between Barber and Lewis almost any sane person would want Barber and that is the direction that the Dodds numbers point. However, there will be a day when Lewis turns out to be a better choice. In this game (or any salary cap game) having a player like Barber means scrimping elsewhere. On those days when Barber does a 11.0 his owners will likely hurt a lot. This tends to lead to large fallout rates because those owners probably don't have a lot of middle ground players to take up the slack. Bye weeks are a bigger problem with large amounts tied to one ot two players. Injuries in this group also tend to be catastrophic.

Want some proof? I arbitrarily took all players selected by any team in the contest who cost more than $33 and I looked at their survival percentages. The overall survival rate in the contest is 1.98% of the teams which started out. Those high priced players had these rates (in order from top to bottom): 3.32, 2.28, 2.27, 1.83, 1.66, 1.21, 1.15, 0.83, 0.70, 0.66, 0.53, 0.47, 0.44, 0.30, 0.24, and 0.00. So of 16 players only 3 had higher survival rates than the overall survival rate. Perhaps even more telling, nine of the 16 had survival rates less than half of the overall survival rate.

Those 16 players collectively appear 218 times on the rosters of the remaining 250 teams and Barber accounts for about 1/3rd of the total. This suggests that since most survivors have a stud it is possible to beat the odds, but you need to be right on target with the rest of your roster.

Excellent points. I think this year may be a little unusual because premier players like LT, P. Manning, Randy Moss, Steven Jackson, Tom Brady, and some others did not have dominant years either due to injuries or other factors. In past years, huge performances by a single player like LT or Manning has been enough to get many teams to the final 250.That being said, I'm not surprised by the above result that most teams with high-priced studs had lower survival rates than the "average" team. IMO selecting one or more high-priced studs is a high-risk, "all-or-nothing" decision -- your team is either very successful (small percentage of the time) or mediocre or unsuccessful (more than average).

Another factor working against high-priced studs is that, even though their average actual points is close to average projected points, they score less than their projected points over 60% of the time (because of many outliers on the high side). Thus, there is more week-to-week variation which hurts a team that must survive the cut for 13 straight weeks.

As opposed to high-priced studs, I think "value" and "diversification" are the keys to consistent success in this contest. Because of the fact that salary $'s are set on August 1st, this means that there are numerous "value players" the week before the 1st game is played. Some of these players like Warner and Slaton are virtual locks because they have earned the starting position. Others like Ryan, Chris Johnson, DeSean Jackson, Antonio Bryant, Kevin Walter, Fasano and Keller have substantially better prospects at the close of camp than they did on August 1st.

Random stat o' the night:

Only 17 of the 250 remaining teams have never been within 10 points of being cut. And this team here wins the award for least sweat during the course of the contest. The closest it came to being cut was 22.8 points. That's living right.

I love this team. It has no high-priced studs and is a great example of the principles of "value" and "diversification" IMO. Highest paid players are Portis ($33), Calvin Johnson ($25), Tony Gonzalez ($23), Marshall ($23), and Thomas Jones ($21).QB - Romo, Cutler, Warner

In general, it's a stronger team than my team. Although I finished 10 spots higher in week 14, I think the above team has better prospects to finish high. Basically, our objectives were similar, but it did a better job of implementation.

O was on the field, therefore it's a TD for Staley, not D/ST. Stat service for FS is not the FBG official stat source, so they must have done something different, but I don't see why.I missed this TD, but that's a cool one, my FIL is good friends with Staley's dad and he also grew up just down the street from where I live. His family took a bus of friends to the SF/CHI preseason game last year so I got to meet him and he's a pretty good kid! Felt kinda weird being the only one on the bus with a Bears jersey on tho...

Interesting...if you didn't break 210 last week things aren't looking good. Only three sub 210 teams in the top 30. I would guess that a large percentage of the field has basically been eliminated from contention. Need some huge weeks from low % owners to see some turnover at the top.

Unfortunately those week 14 scores will be all but impossible to overcome if you missed out. Week 14 I was down at 169th, then this week was 3rd overall, but that only moved me up to 65th.That still leaves me over 50 points from the top guys. Oh well, this contest has been a nice added bonus to the regular Fantasy Football leagues. The nearer it got to the end of the season, the more I was paying attention to this contest.Thanks to FBG for doing this contest, and those of you who kept us up to date in this thread!

I'm in 100th place with 348.0 pts.

But I'm two small money moves away from 5th place. Switch out Nate Washington ($3) for Antonio Bryant ($2) at WR and Utecht ($5) for Carlson ($4) at TE and my score jumps to 407.4......of course I never actually considered either Bryant or Carlson at the beginning of the year, so this really isn't relevant.

I still can't believe Bryant's last two games. Ridiculous.
