Looking for an edumacation here if someone could provide some insight to building a good best ball team. (This is my first year in this format).
The big difference in this best ball format is the cutoffs, when teams are eliminated week-to-week. The first 5 or 6 weeks, the cut off is surprisingly low. Any decent team advances. I think the worst thing you want to think in this game is, "I am a little shaky week 8 (or 9 or 10), but if I make it past that week, I am golden." Better to have a weak bye week team early.

The suspensions apparently really cut down on the number of people taking [steve Smith and Brandon Marshall]. :goodposting:
I'm not sure about that. Marshall is the second-most-taken WR and Smith is the 8th. I think the number of people scared off by the suspensions was balanced (and then some) by the number who were thinking along the same lines as you.
Doug, thanks for the statistics. Very interesting stuff as always. I have a quick question for you: how many teams have *both* TE Jason Witten (6.7%) *and* TE Tony Gonzalez (2.8%)?? My 2008 strategy is weird, locking up $54 on the TE.Last year I barely missed the money in week 17, and did it with just 1 TE rostered (Scaife). This year, I just fell in love with the strategy of two elite TEs, with the thought of getting great positional advantage and probably getting my flex from the TE as well, with the 1.5 PPR. If they both get 80+ catches, I might make some noise again this season.

I didn't go with AD & Taylor because that would be a big part of my lineup with the same bye. You might skate by with the week 4 or 5 bye, but you are pressing it past that. A better 1-2 combo is Portis/Betts for the price, but that's 2 roster spots for 1 position.
If AP/CT is risky because of their week 8 bye, how is Portis/Betts a better combo with a week 10 bye?
The only reasone is because of the much cheaper price tag. It will leave you with more $ to field a solid RB corp come week 10. It is still a risky move that I didn't take.

:X Although that doesn't apply to the best-ball format in general, just this particular "survivor" type contest. Here it is very important to watch the byes, especially the ones later in the season. Unlike a regular fantasy league, you can't afford to have one "bad" week - that's all it takes to get knocked out. (As a non-Warner owner, this is why I'm rooting hard for Leinart to win his job back... There could be a lot of Brees/Warner and Romo/Warner teams falling off the map if Warner isn't still the starter by week 9. )

Thanks Massraider. I started thinking along those lines getting closer to the deadline. Early on, I had a bunch of players with a week 8 and 10 bye. Would have been dog meat in those weeks. That is also why I may have incorrectly removed Witten from my lineup.

The only problem is that Gonzo costs the same amount as Smith, Cotchery and Marshall (and more than Ward, Mason and Santana Moss). If you count on Witten being the higher producer most weeks, wouldn't you be better off getting one of those WR's for the same money? On a weekly basis, they probably outscore Gonzo. I think you're better off with Smith (or one of the others) and Fasano or Keller as a backup TE than Gonzo and a $2 WR.

91 entries include both Peterson and Chester.

If Peterson ownership and Taylor ownership were independent, you'd expect only 54. So Peterson owners did have an overall general tendency to handcuff.

Good point. I actually have Cotchery as a WR2 (Fitzgerald, then a bunch of low $ guys -- Walter, Mush, Randel El, Ike Hillard, Breaston). The idea though is that every week I'll get 15-20 points out of the TE spot, if both have good weeks then very likely one ends up a flex. Both guys seem very reliable and unlikely to bust, whereas a guy like Heap/Scheffler might end up being a waste of ~$15. My main RB is Westy (7.3%), along w/ the other popular 3 so i'm clearly very weak at RB. We'll see how it goes!

I do have some week 5 Bye issues that I didn't catch.

I've read lots of theories about how to do this contest, but my opinion is it really invovles to much luck. My 1st year all 3 of my qb's were injured by wk 3 or 4. I still survived 3 wks with no qb score.

I too used the same strategy. I am another owner who has both Witten and Gonzalez. The last 2 years I got knocked out in the final cutdown week. I hope this year I can make it to the money. Last year I went with 4 starting RB (S.Jackson,Cadillac W.,Marion Barber and Adrian Peterson) and TE Gates. that strategy worked fine, but the money I spent on S. Jackson backfired, I anticipated S. Jackson as being the guy that would seperate me from the pack if I made it to the finals. It didnt happen. This year I am hoping that the TE's carry my team. Only thing that worries me is Witten and Gonzo have the same bye week. Good luck.

As predicted, Warner, Slaton, Ray Rice, and Ricky Williams are the most owned players, but none of them are on as many rosters (percentage-wise) as Wes Welker (67%) was last year. I can't seem to put my hands on the numbers, but I recall Frank Gore and Ben Watson being on an absurd percentage of rosters in 06. Like 80%.
A correction is in order. I was looking at some ownership percentages of live teams later in the year when I saw things like Welker at 67%.As it turns out, Warner, Slaton, Rice, and Ricky are more  than anyone was last year. Sorry about the earlier erroneous statement.

Here is last year's ownership report. And this year's.

Haven't checked the scoring application for accuracy (it was shaky at first last year), but it is reporting me after the early games at 131ish. Still have my QB score to go, as well as significant players to bump out some low scores...

Hoping that the Brady score this week kills some otherwise good teams, but with only 600 or so teams (~4.7%) I suspect we are only killing off the weak and malformed at this point.

Quiz Guy set it up. Looks like all the scoring is good, except for kickers, which is low right now.
Um, while I appreciate the shout out CT, it was not my work. I cannot take credit for that awesome utility. It's Organized Chaos who deserves all the props :tfp:

 big thankis to you & OC
Um, thanks even though I have no involvement in the enterprise whatsoever ;) -QG

BTW, the scoring/flex issues have all been fixed and should be reflected on your teams..
Nicely done OC, very cool.145 despite missing three of my top four WRs. ADP, Olsen and DJax still to play. Kind of liking my team after Week One anyhow.

Based on OC's calculations I'm at:

110.80

+ Berrian minus 8.40

+ Prater minus 5.00

I'm hoping this will spare me the Turk in a week with such a low number of cuts

-QG

McNabb+MBIII ought to get me through this week anyway....waiting for an email to set up that scoring application...

168.5+cutler(-21.0)

Didn't exactly need a big week this week, but I like the score nonetheless.

g/l to the 11999 others moving to week 2!

Maybe I missed it but did they announce how many actually signed up this year? I know last year everyone made it to week 2. I'm hoping I can skate by with the 150 I have now.

145.70

I'm hoping Minny D does better than the 1 point Dallas D gave me.
