2009 Rookie Draft Picks (1 Viewer)

Ok, now that we have a better idea of who is coming out this year, maybe we can revisit the 2009 crop. I think most are putting Wells as the top guy for next year. Who do you think rounds out the top 12 as of today. I think Spiller and Moreno are the next 2 backs to be looked at, but not really sure in which order. You've got Crabtree and Percy Harvin probably at the tops of the WRs and Tebow as the top QB prospect...1. Chris Wells2. K. Moreno 3. C.J. Spiller I think these 3 are actually probably interchangeable in a PPR format4. Marlon Lucky5. Keiland Williams6. M Crabtree7. TebowThoughts?
Crabtree is a beast. In a PPR league he probably warrants consideration in the top 3.
Crabtree is way overrated, at this point......at least until he goes out and measures himself against other top WR prospects, in either a Combine setting or other drills (he'll likely not play in an All-Star Game since he'll probably declare before his Sr. Yr........Sr. Bowl would have been a good eval tool for this guy). I'm just not buying the hype. He plays in a gimmicky, Run 'N Shoot type offense. From what I've seen, lacks explosion on his breaks and hasn't ever faced any type of press coverage in that 5 WR set offense......Not impressed by any means by his athleticism.......

Bump. Looking for the Rashard Mendenhall of 2009 (who is the guy behind THE graduating guy)?
With Broussard and Lester out of the way Keiland Williams could be who you're looking for. Aaron Brown of TCU was slowed by injuries, not an upperclassmen, but he has NFL talent and is well under the radar right now.Of course, Slaton gone should get us all a long, fun look at the force of nature who is Noel Devine.CJ Gable fits the profile with Washington departing, but he has McKnight coming on strong behind him.
Keep an eye on Graig Cooper, Miami.

This article mentions some incoming Juco 'backs that could replace the likes of Jonathan Stewart, Dantrell Savage, Yvenson Bernard, Albert Young and Brandon McAnderson. Must read for fantasy college ballers.

Great prospect.A deep sleeper in my book is Jonathan Dwyer who looked very good at times filling in for an injured Tashard Choice.

All you have to do is watch him to know he's the real deal. He has everything you look for except blazing speed, but his speed is certainly adequate.

OP has a point that he hasn't been pressured at the LOS and probably won't be much at all in his career at TT. But that will be one of the only doubts about his physical skillset. But we have to remember, this isn't Larry Fitzgerald we're talking about here- I'd worry about his maturity and overall development as a WR if he comes out after only two years in college.

I think maturity and experience are overrated for RBs and WRs. Playing WR in the NFL is a bit of a craft and there is often a 1-3 year development period, but more and more we're seeing guys step into the lineup and make an immediate impact. Marques Colston was an immediate impact player right out of the gate despite playing at small school Hofstra in college. Brandon Marshall has become a big time receiver in just two seasons despite playing at a smallish school and being inexperienced at WR. Chad Johnson only played one year of NCAA ball before entering the league and he became a 1,000 yard guy in his second NFL season. Those guys are exceptional talents, but if Crabtree is as good as I think he is then his career will follow a similar trajectory. He's plenty big and athletic to beat the jam, so I doubt he'll have any trouble learning that part of the job. There's no such thing as a sure thing, but right now I think he is the best draft-eligible skill position player for the 2009 group.

Bump. Looking for the Rashard Mendenhall of 2009 (who is the guy behind THE graduating guy)?
Are you looking for someone who's going to step up and emerge as a beast next season? Keiland Williams has a chance at LSU now that Hester is out of the picture, but my current opinion is that he's overrated. Marlon Lucky sort of fits the Stewart/Mendenhall mold. Not sure if he's got the goods though. Arian Foster from Tennessee is like Duckett without the 40 time. Javon Ringer and Tyrell Sutton are two solid, smallish Big 10 backs. Andre Brown from NC State is kind of a Brandon Jacobs type. Chris Wells and Knowshon Moreno are the early top two backs on most lists. I like Moreno more than Wells at this point in time. He's not an elite prospect, but he's worth a mid-late first round pick. You can bet that some other unheralded guys will emerge. Happens every year, but it's hard to predict where the lightning will strike.

For me, the early story of the 2009 draft class is Darrius Heyward-Bey versus Michael Crabtree. Two beastly WRs who have the potential to be top targets in the NFL. Crabtree is shiftier, rangier, and tougher with better hands. Heyward-Bey has ideal size and elite long speed. Crab is kind of a Boldin/Fitz hybrid, while DHB is in the Chad Johnson/Reggie Wayne mold. I'm excited about both of these guys. They're in my early top 3 along with Moreno. I think Crab is my top player since he looks like a can't-miss.
Yes, looking for the high pedigree guys who will finally get their opportunity to carry the load. What do you think of DeMarco Murray?

In a players you may not know thread,I named Cooper last August as a probable breakout player along with Knowshon. Pretty sure that's the first mention of either around here. Cooper's spring a year ago was a lot more impressive than his play, but he is exciting. James did a decent job holding him off. I wonder if either is going to do much at the next level. Knowshon, of course, was a pretty good call considering he had yet to have a carry. I think Kahlil Bell at UCLA has interesting game. He's improving by leaps and bounds anyway. Jeremiah Johnson looked really good in RBBC with Stewart several times. His knee is a mess though. Ryan Matthews at Fresno State is gonna be a good one. Lonyae Miller plays behind him (sort of) and has a very complete NFL skillset, but something's been missing so far.

Should be getting reports from spring ball, but I'm not paying close attention yet. Spring ball reports would be an interesting thread. That's where I picked up on Knowshon last April.

Yeah good call on Moreno that early. What have you been hearing about J.Johnson's knee? That incoming Juco transfer may win the job and break out assuming Oregon can find a replacement for Dixon not named Leaf.

I picked Moreno (4th round) and Keiland (1st round) in my college dynasty draft when they were coming out of high school.

He's okay. Kind of reminds me of a cross between Steve Slaton and Kevin Smith. He has long legs like Smith, but can still make some sharp cuts and definitely has a nice burst of speed. I look at him as a 2nd-3rd round guy right now. He could move up into the first if he has a big season and good workouts, but he's not an elite prospect in my (early) opinion.

I knew Moreno was about the most talented RB to come out of New Jersey maybe ever. I have family back there. Then he redshirts and just tears it up in spring ball. I was more interested in Lumpkin and Brown when I started reading about how good Knowshon looked. Funny thing about that link is EBF already owned Moreno, right out of high school, then Construx... well, read a few more posts in that thread. It's funny. Construx missed on that one. :lmao:Johnson's knee is the kind that could take two years to be right and that could be career ending for someone in his situation. It's a shame because his ability is the reason Stewart was in RBBC, not coaching philosophy. The juco transfer, LaGarrette Blount, will probably start the season, and who knows what he can do? I've heard he's a beast.

I like the guy alot and suspect he will be close to tops in the nation in total yards and touchdowns next year. He needs to bulk up those legs and play closer to 210 to be considered an elite RB prospect. Obviously he's got a long way to go with only one season under his belt.I can see teh Kevin Smith comparison as well. Only difference is that I'm a big fan of Smith! :lmao:

Before the turf toe injury he looked pretty special to me. After he looked to slow for his strength. He was playing in pain, so maybe he does better healthy. Maybe that turf toe is serious though?

His knee is what I'm more worried about. Hopefully he'll have a clean bill of health soon enough.

LOL, but I was right on Goodson!

After seeing the first two rounds of the draft, I'm starting to contemplate trades involving 2008 rookie picks. Probably the weakest area for me in FF is my knowledge of prospective classes for the next year. Not a completely debilitating thing; like many have said in this thread already, a lot can change to shift the evaluation of a college class over the course of post-season, let alone an entire year.

That said, treating a first round rookie pick as the same value year in and year out without getting a feel for how strong an upcoming class is in various areas is not good. I'm sure others could benefit from a discussion on this, but just to give an example here -- if there's expected to be some top-notch talent at RB next year, then I'd be inclined to move my #3 and #9 in 2008 for something like an elite TE, a first rounder in 2009, and a low first rounder / high second rounder in 2008. One of many, many options to consider, and how (or whether) 2009 picks get involved would depend heavily on how the top prospects compare, the expected depth, etc.

So, any early evaluations of the 2009 QB/RB/WR classes as a whole compared to the 2008 classes?

The RB class will almost certainly be worse. Although nobody saw Mendenhall coming into his own like he did in '07, I can't predict quite the same to happen in '08.Of the RBs- Chris Wells (Ohio State), Knowshon Moreno (Georgia), C.J. Spiller (Clemson), and Keiland Williams (LSU) will probably be the top underclassmen to declare. The only Senior I see being a solid NFL prospect is James Davis (Clemson) who is basically a more durable version of Tashard Choice.Williams is a guy who could see his stock soar depending on his upcoming Junior season. I think we've already seen the best of Spiller who is a Felix Jones type speed back who will have some questions as to weather he can carry the full load. The again, he could come back for his Senior season to prove he can do just that with Davis gone. Not likely though.Moreno will only be a redshirt Sophomore, but he has alot of talent to go with a relentlessness seen out of backs like Marion Barber. I think he'll come out as his value will be very high IMO.Wells was a 5-star recruit out of H.S. and hasn't disappointed at tOSU. But questions will always arise out of a Big 10 back who has produced behind a (usually) dominant OSU O-line. He has the build to be an every-down NFL 'back and will probably be the first back selected in the draft.I expect Wells to be valued as Jonathan Stewart would have been valued without the durability issues. In that light, I suppose he will be just about on par with most years' top Rookie RB pick in terms of fantasy potential. Moreno will get probably a 1st Round grade similar to Felix Jones but should be a bit more valuable in FF circles, but we're not talking as valuable as Mendenhall or Stewart. Spiller will be valued as a 1st/early-2nd rounder who people will have questions as to weather he'll be a bell cow NFL back. Williams probably won't go lower than the 2nd round due to his size and speed, so we should assume he will be no less valuable than a guy like Forte, with Mendenhall-like potential. It doesn't appear there are any QBs that are destined to be top 5 NFL picks, even given all the hype surrounding Tim Tebow (Florida). Analysts will still drool over this guy which will most likely give him the edge to be the #1 fantasy QB to be sought-after, but I don't think he should be valued higher than Matt Ryan. The depth at QB in '09 appears much more evident than this year, which was weak.At WR, I don't think next year's class could possibly be as deep and lacking at the top, especially considering the potential some guys have already shown. Darius Heyward-Bey (Maryland), Michael Crabtree (Texas Tech), Percy Harvin (Florida), and Jeremy Maclin (Missouri) should all be 1st Round picks. Maclin may stay since he'll only be a redshirt Sophomore (as is Crabtree though he looks more likely to come out in '09).

I'll have a lot more to say about these guys a couple weeks from now.
hey EBF, thanks for all the great posts!Would you be willing to give us a top10 for each class year? And maybe a top 50 in high school? Thats how I got ADP and Devine. I had to jump out a few years to find the blue chippers. My leagues gobble up all the talent even at the high school senior level. Mcguffie Scott and pryor have been rostered for 18 months already. Thanks again.

Wells won't come out early unless he wins the Heisman. He has already annouced it!

2010 all you little boys will get to see what you missed the Jimmy Brown ERA.

Personally, I think he will change his mind. $$$$ has a way of doing that but that's what he said!

There are a couple of guys that are totally being omitted in this thread that have star potential. I'll say more once my draft is over.

I'm almost certain Wells will come out next year. He will be the #1 RB taken in the draft if he declares.

Two now seniors who stuck in my head while watching 08 prospects were RB Jeremiah Johnson of the Oregon Ducks, whom at some points looked better then his counterpart and Tar Heels WR Branden Tate, in the game against ECU (Chris Johnson) he might of been the biggest playmaker on the field.

Johnson was as productive as Stewart for a period of time at Oregon and they relied on him as a primary ball-carrier in some games. But he tore his ACL last year so i'm not sure he won't sit out this season. Not to mention the injury could doom his chances of becoming a next-level talent.Haven't heard much about Tate, but I know his teamate Hakeem Nicks has some serious talent. Butch Davis isn't doing a bad job recruiting down there.

There was one potential stud who I originally omitted becuase his eligibility was in question. It seems now that this player will be eligible and perhaps a top 3 fantasy pick next season.ETA: I'm guessing the second player you were thinking of was OU TE Gresham who I passed up becuase I hadn't completely checked out the underclassmen TEs.

The most significant omission is LESEAN MCCOY from Pitt. He is a future fantasy star: strong, durable, home run speed, a prototypical NFL RB. Reminds one of another great Pitt RB that had a fairly successful NFL career in Dallas.

McCoy will be a Sophomore this year - but he went to prep school, which means he'll be out of high school for 3 years after the 2008 season and thus eligible for the 2009 draft.

Top 10 pick in 2009 if he declares...maybe top 5.

A couple RBs.
From My List?
I'm like jurb unfortunately. Let a draft get behind me and I'll tell you who I think is being missed. Sorry. Neither of us should have posted cryptically like that. Good news is we have a little time before this matters. :)

I like McCoy a lot, but I don't really get all the Dorsett comparisons. McCoy plays a much different game, and the one thing he lacks is what Dorsett did best... acceleration. Dorsett could go from five yards behind the LoS to five yards in front of it in a blur, literally a blur. McCoy is a nice runner with all kinds of talent, but the feature of his game isn't blinding burst like TD had.

He seemed to have more burst before his injury senior year. Still not really an accelerator though.

McCoy was on my radar in BYB III. I've known about him for a while. Just kept my mouth shut because I was considering him in the draft. Unfortunately, his profile blew up in the past few days after being featured prominently in a number of articles on the 2009 draft. He's a nice player. Good speed and moves. Good instincts. The Pitt fans rave about him. The glaring deficiency in his game is a lack of pure size and power. That could hold him back in the NFL. He's a first round talent though.

Another guy to watch next year is Stafon Johnson of USC. I just took him with the 8.14 in BYB III. Look for him to rise up the boards after a 1,000+ yard season in 2008. Here's a little taste of what he can do:

Another guy to watch next year is Stafon Johnson of USC. I just took him with the 8.14 in BYB III. Look for him to rise up the boards after a 1,000+ yard season in 2008. Here's a little taste of what he can do:

Those USC guys are no joke. I just updated my 2009 lists not too long ago. Chalk full of Trojans.

What do you think of DeMarco Murray?
Lets see how he recovers from that dislocated kneecap.

Murray's best attributes are is quick (Portis like) feet and vision.

I just took Keiland in BYBIII, so obviously I'm high on him. He did have another fumble in the spring game, and Murphy took over after that, but what I love most about Williams looking at him through the lens of NFL readiness is his size/speed combo. He's about 5'11" 225, but clearly has sub 4.5 speed.

This video isnt good quality, but it shows his vision

He reminds me a LOT of Mendenhall. Also, he's a military academy kid, so you know he understands discipline.

the coaches say he is looking very good and is coming along well. I expect him to be ready for August. He is a true playmaker that come out in 2009 as a redshirt sophomore.

The most significant omission is LESEAN MCCOY from Pitt. He is a future fantasy star: strong, durable, home run speed, a prototypical NFL RB. Reminds one of another great Pitt RB that had a fairly successful NFL career in Dallas.McCoy will be a Sophomore this year - but he went to prep school, which means he'll be out of high school for 3 years after the 2008 season and thus eligible for the 2009 draft.Top 10 pick in 2009 if he declares...maybe top 5.

He's also bulked up to around 212 pounds. I can't wait to see how he comes back from his injury, and if he still has that breakaway speed.
