2009 Rookie Draft Picks (1 Viewer)

Do you see a team becoming a QBBC, with a QB that comes in specifically for the red zone? Similar to what Arizona did this year. I agree with you about Tebow tho, I think he could find some success in the NFL with the right coach and team.
Why would they have to run a QBBC? I think a good comparison would be Daunte Culpepper. The styles aren't a perfect match, but both guys are big, strong, hard to take down, a threat to run the football, and great in short yardage. Both guys have a rocket for an arm, both guys have questions about their ability to scan the field and move through their progressions. I think Tebow has more physical upside, and I think he's going to be a better decision maker as a pro, but that's just speculation at this point because he really hasn't been asked to do so yet. I think Tebow will be a better prospect coming out than Culpepper was, which is saying something because Culpepper was a great prospect. I don't know if Tebow will be as good of a pro, because despite the massive disrespect for his accomplishments, Culpepper is still a very good QB. He's looked serviceable in Oakland, and serviceable in Oakland is very good anywhere else.Either way, there's no need for a QBBC, because Tebow is at the very worst an acceptable passer (I think he's better than acceptable, personally- he has a higher passer rating than any heisman-winning QB in history, for instance). He's a better passer than Leak was. The only reason Florida ran a QBBC last year is because Tebow was still learning the offense and developing as a passer. By creating a "Tebow package" of plays, they could take advantage of Tebow's skills without scaling back the offense at all while he learned (because Leak knew the whole offense).

If Tim Tebow gets drafted in the top half of the first round, then I think he's actually underrated on that list. If Tebow is a top-10 pick, I might be tempted to burn a top-2 or top-3 rookie pick on him, because that short-yardage rushing ability is going to be a fantasy goldmine in the pros.
I think he will, and I'll be angling for him in my dynasty drafts. I would vaguely compare Tebow to VY - he's not as elusive as VY, but his running ability is just as valuable for fantasy, especially because as SSOG has pointed out, he can not be denied in the red zone. Also, like VY, the way he gets it done ain't pretty, but it sure is effective, and he seems to will his team to wins - he has the QB leadership intangible that a lot of NFL clubs could use right now. He has also improved as a passer as the year has gone on, and should continue to improve. As long as his pro OC is creative, and doesn't tinker too much with him, Tebow should be a QB1 for fantasy once he arrives.
I think this is the key. Everyone disparages his 22 TDs, saying they're only 3-5 yard plunges at the goal line. My big response to that is, if it were so easy to score on 3-5 yard plunges at the goal line, why didn't Herschel, Bo, Shaun, Garrison, Emmitt, or any of the other stellar SEC RBs manage to get 22 scores? I mean, Tomlinson and Holmes probably scored just as high of a percentage of their TDs in goal-to-go situations as Tebow did this year. Some players just have a "nose for the end zone"- strength, desire, and a knowledge of what's needed- and Tebow has it. That's a skill that translates to the pros. If Tebow were in the NFL right now, I'd think he'd be one of the best short-yardage options in the league. He's not fast, but neither was Jerome Bettis. I feel sorry for any RBs on the team that drafts Tebow, because that kid is going to be the biggest goal-line vulture in the league.

Ok, now that we have a better idea of who is coming out this year, maybe we can revisit the 2009 crop. I think most are putting Wells as the top guy for next year. Who do you think rounds out the top 12 as of today. I think Spiller and Moreno are the next 2 backs to be looked at, but not really sure in which order. You've got Crabtree and Percy Harvin probably at the tops of the WRs and Tebow as the top QB prospect...

1. Chris Wells

2. K. Moreno

3. C.J. Spiller

I think these 3 are actually probably interchangeable in a PPR format

4. Marlon Lucky

5. Keiland Williams

6. M Crabtree

7. Tebow

Thoughts?

Crabtree is a beast. In a PPR league he probably warrants consideration in the top 3.

Agree. Most likely above Lucky and possibly above Spiller. I need to see more of Spiller, but what I've seen I don't think he translates very well.

In PPR Lucky will be much more valuable. One of the most natural receiving RB's I've seen. I haven't been impressed by his running (not very shifty) so unless he improves he's likely going to be relegated to a 3rd down type role, maybe a little more in a RBBC.

Are you saying Lucky will be more valuable than Spiller (I agree) or Crabtree?BTW, these threads are the best place to find the best FBG has to offer on these boards. You guys in here and in similar threads are what makes the Shark Pool my home page!

This will be the defining year for Spiller b/c he doesn't have James Davis there. Its going to be all Spiller, all the time. Can he handle the load is the main question.

With or without Davis, I was unimpressed w/ Spiller as a RB. Speed alone can get you a lot in college, not always so in the NFL. Decent KR, and a good but not dominant college RB. Granted, he's got time to improve enough to become a good prospect.

Realistically, Crabtree is probably the best offensive player in this draft and should even be considered with the 1.01 pick in PPR. Forget about next year. He would be the top WR prospect in the draft if he came out THIS year. Moreno and Wells are nice and all, but they're more or less just your garden variety first round RB prospects. Crabtree is a bit more rare.

Yea, Heyward-Bey is another underclassmen who looks like a better prospect than any of the receivers available this year.

Looking at the top of the WR class, that's not saying all that much. He probably would have been the top WR of the Holmes/Johnson class, too. :goodposting:

2009 top 32 from CFN

1. Tim Tebow, QB Florida (Jr.)

Think Alex Smith with talent. Tebow seems like the type who'll want to stay for all four years, but 2009 projects to be among the worst quarterback drafts in a long, long time making the bulldozing lefty a hot prospect. He has the size, the passing accuracy, the mobility, and the makeup to become a franchise-shaper.

3. Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB Ohio State (Jr.)

With size, breakaway speed, and toughness between the tackles, Beanie is a do-it-all back who can be a 25-carry NFL franchise builder. With the talent coming back on the Buckeye line, only injuries will keep Wells from being deep in the hunt for the Heisman.

11. C.J. Spiller, RB Clemson (Jr.)

With James Davis out of the picture, the Tiger running game will be all about the one-time super-recruit who has shown flashes of greatness over his first two seasons. While he's not huge, he has great pop and breakaway speed once he gets through the line.

16. Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR Maryland (Jr.)

Fast, fast, fast. At 6-2 and likely to be a solid 210 by 2009 draft time, and with the best wheels in the draft, or at least in the top five overall, he'll have all the measurables to go along with the polish from another year.

19. Percy Harvin, WR Florida (Jr.)

He might not be a pure wide receiver at an NFL level, but he's an elite playmaker no matter how he gets the ball in his hands. No, he's not going to be a No. 1 target for anyone, but he'll be a fun toy for some creative offensive coordinator to play with.

Spiller is a better version of Lorenzo Booker, but I still don't think he has the size to be an every down back. Versatile, yes, but if you want to draft a stud RB, no. For him a lot will depend on what team he's drafted by.It's hard for me to tell how much of Crabtree's success is his talent or the offense he's in. I'm looking forward to his combine and would feel much better about him if he runs a sub 4.5. I like Keiland Williams a lot but hasn't shown much as a receiver. He would be much better in non-PPR and I'd move him up to 1.03.In PPR:1. Wells2. Moreno3. Crabtree (assuming sub 4.5)4. Lucky5. K. Williams6. Spiller

In a PPR I would look hard at the WRs in the top 3 and as of today I would prefer both Crabtree and Heyward-Bey to Lucky.I've had both Knowshon Moreno and Keiland Williams on my college dynasty roster since they were in high school (they were my 4th and 1st round picks in 2006). They're both good players, but I don't know that either really qualifies as a rare talent. Knowshon is a solid first round RB, but he's closer to Maroney than Peterson (aka solid starter, but not a stud). Keiland is a bit of an enigma since LSU seems determined not to give him any opportunities. He certainly has the potential to be a late riser and vault up the charts next year, but he's really just a curiosity right now.

Any thoughts on Javarris James? His 2007 season was pathetic, but that was probably due to his weak supporting cast, rather than his own play.

He won't get drafted to start unless he blows up this season. Not saying he couldn't start down the road if given a chance. 2nd rounder most likely in rookie drafts.

You don't think he will even be drafted? walterfootball.com has him as a top 5 RB. I know that doesn't mean much, but to say he won't be drafted could be a stretch.

Drafted to start = drafted to be a starter. Sorry for confusion. He could very well be 5-8th RB off the board.

Yes, thank you. I always get those Chads confused.

I don't want to pry too much into this as we have an developmental draft upcoming, but i would be shocked to see Lucky go before Moreno...i also think Spiller and Williams should be ranked higher.

I agree with this. From what I have seen of Lucky, he would not be in my Top 30 of RBs in college football.

I'm liking Heyward-Bey more and more. It's still early, but I think he might be the best draft-eligible skill position prospect in the NCAA right now. No way would I pass him up for some of those marginal RBs.

He is a definite contender for WR1 on this list and I think the only comparable guys in the NCAAs are Crabtree and True Sophmore Arrelious Benn.Harvin will no doubt be a nice weapon in the pros, but he is not the natural WR that the above 3 guys are.I usually overrate RBs on my lists because most leagues value the RB positions more. (assume no PPR)Another guy I really got behind last year was Clemson's Aaron Kelly and he has emerged as a potential 1st Rounder in '09.

Agreed, but I think Crabtree and Heyward-Bey are potentially better WR prospects than Wells and Moreno are RB prospects. It's obviously a bit early in the game, but they look like the two elite talents in next year's crop.

Do you really think Crabtree will def come out next year? There are obviously questions about the system he plays in inflating his numbers.I also didn't realize Jeremy Maclin, another electrifying Sophmore WR was a Redshirt, thus putting his name in the mix along with Harvin as arguably the best DeSean Jackson-like weapon eligible in '09.I moved a few names around, but I'm very satisfied with the current list. Tough to leave out some neames, but I figured I'd limit the Bubblers to potential 1st Round QBs and WRs, and likely Day 1 RBsFunny to see an '08, '09 and '10 USC WR in the discussion, and all eligible next year.

Most guys don't pass up top 15 money if they can get it. I figure he'll be two and done like Larry Fitzgerald if he gets good feedback from the advisory committee.

I agree with that. Yes, Crabtree's numbers are inflated due to TT throwing the ball 50-60 times a game, however, make no mistaKe this guy is a the real deal. I got to see him in Austin this past year. He easily got seperation (but TX secondary was suspect this year) and ran good routes from what I could tell. He just struck fear in me every time he touched the ball, he is a homerun threat everytime.

2. Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State*

3. Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia**

4. Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech**

5. James Davis, RB, Clemson

6. C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson*

7. Darius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland*

8. Terry Grant, RB, Alabama**

9. Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri**

10. Tim Tebow, QB, Florida*

11. Percy Harvin, WR, Florida*

12. Javon Ringer, RB, Michigan State
Murray over Wells
Considering all '08, '09, plus the top 2 RBs from the '10 class are eligible for this list, being #2 is no insult. Murray is the real deal and Wells is undoubtedly in the top 3 here and I wouldn't even consider any QB or WR in a fantasy draft over him.

I just traded for the 3 pick (had the 5) to SECURE Crabtree. From what I see of him, he's just that good. That and the lifespan of the RB troubles me.

although I agree no WR or QB compare, but Murray over Wells, that's a tough sell.
Living in Michigan, I see a lot of the Big 10 games.Being an OU alumnus, I see a lot of their games. In both cases, they have dominant OLs, so it's somewhat tough to project them. We've seen more of Wells, so he's the safer pick at this point, but Murray looks every bit as good to me. I'm not sure how complete of a back he is, but that's generally true of most college RBs, particularly freshmen. Also, Peterson isn't anywhere near a complete back, but that hasn't stopped him from being the #1 dynasty QB this summer. Murray's not Peterson, but he is really good.

Harvin, Crabtree, and Heyward-Bey are better than any of the RB prospects in my (early) opinion. Those are the guys I'm excited about heading into next college season.

***PRE-SPRING PRACTICE UPDATE***

The lists are based upon the fantasy upside of these players in their best potential situation.

Crabtree could be 1.01 in both the NFL and dynasty leagues, but the other two are not that special. Beanie is a beast like Stewart. I'll be surprised if you feel this way this time next year.

This yrs clss was Hyped all last season... now that its here; I am a little disappointed.

Yes; there are what seems to be 3 sure fire RBs / 1 or 2 maybes after / and then there always another 1 or 2 mid-season surprises that come out of nowhere.

However; what we all learned by playing FF is that atleast 1 of those big 3 will bust and then only 1 of the next 4 drafted RB will even bee playing draftedable in FF 4 yrs from now.

So I call this classes a disappointment since

there is only 1 WR that is being mentioned

No TE is being hype; and only one seems draftable

There only seems to be Matt Ryan as a NFL QB; everyone else sounds like a project pick

IDP wise there are no LBs to even speak of

theres is some great DLs in this draft... but thats every yr (DLs are so tough to call)

and then theres a couple of good DBs coming out

So; I have been loading up on 2009 picks... honestly; If I can't get in the top 4 or 5.. I'm just not interested. Give me a productive player or give me another shot at the next yrs draft.

:shark: Im looking for a hole in his game, but I cant find it. Any worries about Texas Tech's system making him look better than he really is go poof when you watch him play. He's the real deal and then some. I have little doubt that he will come out next year and be the first WR off the board.

I think Moreno has a legit shot at being the #1 player selected in fantasy drafts next year (if he declares).

Moreno vs Florida

Check out his highlights from the Florida/UGA game. The guy has great vision, loves contact, and has good speed.

Crabtree is a beast, but i still think he falls behind Wells and Moreno (maybe Murray if he stays healthy)

Who do you think will be the better pro, Harvin or Maclin? And how do they compare to Ginn/Desean?

Bump. Looking for the Rashard Mendenhall of 2009 (who is the guy behind THE graduating guy)?
Are you looking for someone who's going to step up and emerge as a beast next season? Keiland Williams has a chance at LSU now that Hester is out of the picture, but my current opinion is that he's overrated. Marlon Lucky sort of fits the Stewart/Mendenhall mold. Not sure if he's got the goods though. Arian Foster from Tennessee is like Duckett without the 40 time. Javon Ringer and Tyrell Sutton are two solid, smallish Big 10 backs. Andre Brown from NC State is kind of a Brandon Jacobs type. Chris Wells and Knowshon Moreno are the early top two backs on most lists. I like Moreno more than Wells at this point in time. He's not an elite prospect, but he's worth a mid-late first round pick. You can bet that some other unheralded guys will emerge. Happens every year, but it's hard to predict where the lightning will strike. For me, the early story of the 2009 draft class is Darrius Heyward-Bey versus Michael Crabtree. Two beastly WRs who have the potential to be top targets in the NFL. Crabtree is shiftier, rangier, and tougher with better hands. Heyward-Bey has ideal size and elite long speed. Crab is kind of a Boldin/Fitz hybrid, while DHB is in the Chad Johnson/Reggie Wayne mold. I'm excited about both of these guys. They're in my early top 3 along with Moreno. I think Crab is my top player since he looks like a can't-miss.

With Broussard and Lester out of the way Keiland Williams could be who you're looking for. Aaron Brown of TCU was slowed by injuries, not an upperclassmen, but he has NFL talent and is well under the radar right now.Of course, Slaton gone should get us all a long, fun look at the force of nature who is Noel Devine.CJ Gable fits the profile with Washington departing, but he has McKnight coming on strong behind him.
