2010 FBG Post Season Contest (1 Viewer)

Like most others I picked the two teams I think will make it to the Super Bowl and loaded up on those players, particularly the studs. I went with a SD/MIN matchup. I ended up with nine players from these two teams at a cost of $179. I then needed to fill in the rest of my team to survive weeks 1 through 3. And that meant I needed to spend the rest of my salary on players that would play week 1, so I took a chance and skipped any players from NO or IND. I picked one player each from the BAL/NE game, ensuring I have a player from that matchup playing in week 2. Likewise for the other week 1 games. I'll need an upset of NO and/or IND in week 2 to advance my players from the wildcard week and at least 2 each from MIN and SD to score BIG in week 3 to survive. I figured to win this you have to score big in the SB and just hope to survive weeks 1-3.QB - Philip Rivers - SD - $28QB - Brett Favre - MIN - $25RB - Adrian Peterson - MIN - $25RB - LaDamianian Tomlinson - SD - $17RB - Ray Rice - BAL - $16RB - Brian Westbrook - PHI - $10RB - Chester Taylor - MIN - $8RB - Felix Jones - DAL - $8RB - Larry Johnson - CIN - $5RB - John Kuhn - GB - $2WR - Vincent Jackson - SD - $21WR - Sidney Rice - MIN - $19WR - Greg Jennings - GB - $16WR - Steve Breaston - ARI - $11WR - Julian Edelman - NE - $11WR - Brad Smith - NYJ - $2WR - Greg Lewis - MIN - $2TE - Antonio Gates - SD - $24Ideally I want BAL, PHI, GB, and CIN to win week 1 giving me the SD & MIN players and Rice, Westbrook, Jennings, Johnson and Kuhn in week 2. That'll give me 9 scoring players in week 2.I'll need NO or IND to lose in week 2 and to advance my SD & MIN players and preferrably GB and BAL wins giving me SD, MIN and Jennings and Rice in week 3. With only six players scoring in week 3 I'll need some big scores from my two SD and two MIN players. If I'm fortunate to survive weeks 1-3 I like my studs from SD and MIN.Edited to add that the simulator gives me a 6% chance of surviving week 1.
I figured Minn and SD in the Superbowl too, you'll crush my team if you make it to the SB.

Guessed on a SD/DAL SB

Philip Rivers $28 0.00

Darren Sproles $13 0.00

Malcom Floyd $10 0.00

Antonio Gates $24 0.00

Fred Taylor $11 0.00

Julian Edelman $11 0.00

Miles Austin $22 0.00

Jason Witten $19 0.00

Kurt Warner $21 0.00

Tim Hightower $13 0.00

Like most, I went with the two teams that I think will be in the playoffs - SD/GB - and spent most of my cash there, getting both QBs, both Ks, both TEs and a WR from each team. Spent another chunk of my cash getting players from the Championship games - Heap/Rice from BAL and Peterson/Berrian from MIN. Spent the remainder of my cash filling in some players that should help keep me in the contest for the early weeks. Hopefully, anyway. ;)

My team:

Pierre Garcon $13 0.00

Philip Rivers $28 0.00

Malcom Floyd $10 0.00

Antonio Gates $24 0.00

Nate Kaeding $14 0.00

Andre Caldwell $8 0.00

Dallas Cowboys $8 0.00

Aaron Rodgers $30 0.00

Jermichael Finley $17 0.00

Mason Crosby $11 0.00

While I said above I am just in it to see how many weeks I can last, if I were to go all out to win it I would go with anything BUT chalk. Going chalk only guarantees you don't win. The guy who plans everything right statistically cannot win. I promise you that.

Those of you hoping to be in the money and counting on Manning and Wayne and Clark to get you there need to realize there are so many others doing exactly that same thing and owning those exact players that even if the Colts make it to the SB your chances are very slim unless you have juuuuuuust the right minor unique player as well.

There's no carry over of points from the previous week, so someone in SB week has to set you apart, and it WON'T be a big name player. You have to have picked the right opponent, most likely some unlikely underdog (like the Cardinals were last year), and some guy like, say, Urban has to be your lucky wild card. That's just how it is with 8901 permutations. And it's why, with a .0001123 chance of winning this thing to start out, I didn't overthink it. No point in me trying to sweat who the nobody player will be who will win this for someone.

If the JETS make the SB, I think I have a shot at the $$, especially if it's MIN and possibly GB.

I went go big or go home with a NYJ/MIN SuperBowl. I originally had IND/MIN SB, but IND players were too expensive, and it would have had too many zero's week 1. I figured not too many people would pick JETS, and they have a realistic chance at making the SB.

My theory was to stack up on the two teams I thought would make the Superbowl.

Notes:

Week 1

My theory for the first week was to only pick players from teams I think will win(NYJ, NE, GB, DAL). This is a better approach than picking one player from each team, as if you pick correctly you have 2 active players week 2, instead of 1. The only exception to this rule was D Williams, for $2 I couldn't resist the guaranteed score for Week 1.

For the support teams, I mostly went with Kickers and Defenses. Mostly because they were cheaper and were consistent points. They are not there to win me the championship, only get me there...

I couldn't resist Finley @ $17.

Week 2

Week 2 I wanted to have 2 players from each of the bye week teams, but decided not to for the Colts. If I was going to have a chance, it would be in having the JETS beat the Colts. So

Total Players 22

SUPERBOWL TEAMS($130)

Mark Sanchez $13

Thomas Jones $14

Braylon Edwards $10

Brad Smith $2

Dustin Keller $9

New York Jets $7

Brett Favre $25

Adrian Peterson $25

Percy Harvin $16

Minnesota Vikings $9

WEEK 1 SUPPORT TEAMS($63)

Julian Edelman $11

New England Patriots $9

Demetrius Williams $2

Shaun Suisham $6

Dallas Cowboys $8

Jermichael Finley $17

Green Bay Packers $10

WEEK 2 TEAMS ($57)

Indianapolis Colts $9

Nate Kaeding $14

San Diego Chargers $10

Jeremy Shockey $13

Garrett Hartley $11

I see a lot of QB/RB/WR teams. I went exactly opposite:

QB - Drew Brees - NO - $29

QB - Philip Rivers - SD - $28

RB - LaDainian Tomlinson - SD - $17

TE - Antonio Gates - SD - $24

TE - Jeremy Shockey - NO - $13

PK - Nate Kaeding - SD - $14

PK - Stephen Gostkowski - NE - $13

PK - Mason Crosby - GB - $11

PK - Garrett Hartley - NO - $11

PK - Neil Rackers - ARI - $8

PK - Billy Cundiff - BAL - $6

PK - Shaun Suisham - DAL - $6

TD - New Orleans Saints - NO - $13

TD - Philadelphia Eagles - PHI - $11

TD - Green Bay Packers - GB - $10

TD - San Diego Chargers - SD - $10

TD - Minnesota Vikings - MIN - $9

TD - New England Patriots - NE - $9

TD - Arizona Cardinals - ARI - $8

I have just 5 kickers and 5 defenses playing this week, but I have a lot of Chargers and Saints if I survive. I know a lot of people eschewed kickers and defenses in this contest for "higher scoring" positions like RB and WR, but I think there's very little value at running back for the most likely Superbowl teams, and all of the top teams have a good chance of spreading the ball around. I like New England's chances, but it's going to be very difficult to get consistent scoring out of anyone but Brady, and I figured that any team that picks New England to go far would automatically have Brady. Same problem with Manning.

I also thought that the top TE's scoring was a huge factor in these games, with 1.5 PPR. Gates and/or Shockey will likely outscore Vincent Jackson and whichever New Orleans WR you wanted to draft.

If I survive this week, I will probably have more players involved in week 2 than most teams, again, mostly kickers and defenses. And after that, everyone will be pretty thin, so if the Chargers and Saints do go to their conference championships, I'l have a lot of points. I have no Colts, but have the Packers, Vikings and Cardinals K/D, the Dallas kicker, and the Eagles D, so if the Superbowl is Saints/Chargers, I'll have at least five or six players in the conference championship week to go with the highest scoring players from two of the higher scoring teams in the playoffs.

I don't expect to put up huge points each week, but this is a high risk/high reward team.

My team is extremely similar to bostonfred's:

Austin Collie $14 0.00 Philip Rivers $28 0.00 Antonio Gates $24 0.00 Cincinnati Bengals $8 0.00 Julian Edelman $11 0.00 New England Patriots $9 0.00 Todd Heap $10 0.00 Baltimore Ravens $7 0.00 New York Jets $7 0.00 Drew Brees $29 0.00 Pierre Thomas $15 0.00 Marques Colston $19 0.00 Robert Meachem $14 0.00 Shaun Suisham $6 0.00 Neil Rackers $8 0.00 Greg Jennings $16 0.00 Mason Crosby $11 0.00 David Akers $13 0.00I took all four defenses playing outdoors this weekend, and all four kickers playing indoors. That gives me 8 scorers, and a guarantee of four next week. Then I guessed NO/SD in the Super Bowl and went with QB/receiver hookups there to increase variance.

Then I filled in with support players that looked like decent bargains: Collie, Heap, Edelmn, Jennings.

I clearly miscalculated how many points it would take to get to round 2, as the sim shows only a 23% chance

That comes from the NCAA tourney I think. It means picking all the favorites. In this case, what I mean is picking all the big name scorers on the teams (esp. Indy since the NFC is less clear) favored to be in the SB.

You realize that even if it's Dallas/Baltimore Super Bowl, you'll never get there? You're going to have 4 players counting for you in weeks 1, 2, and 3 (aside from those token GB guys). Good luck with that.

Like the approach bostonfred and Doug Drinen took.
I went with 4 PKs and thought there was good $ per point as Bass and Brew put it earlier, but I don't see the value of defenses per dollar since there are no points awarded for yardage or points against. Just sacks, INTs, safeties, and TDs. Not a high scoring weekly ceiling without the YA and PA factors, and barely better than a 1/1 ratio of $ to points. Maybe I'm missing something? Someone tell me.

Went Evelyn Woods on the contest rules at the last minute. :confused:Go Jordy!

My approach will probably cost me...I only saw the email about the contest today, and had about 15 minutes to do it since I had to work. I thought the rules said you could only get the points from the two highest scoring players you owned per team. That being the case, I decided to just have a player from each team, that way I should get points from two players each game (baring no injuries). Each game I will lose one a player though...I definitely went QB and RB heavy on this strategy.

Peyton Manning $29

Philip Rivers $28

Cedric Benson $16

Fred Taylor $11

Ray Rice $16

Thomas Jones $14

Robert Meachem $14

Brett Favre $25

Tony Romo $26

Kurt Warner $21

Aaron Rodgers $30

DeSean Jackson $19

Edit: DOAH ... Missed this little tidbit! In the first three rounds, ONLY YOUR TWO HIGHEST-SCORING PLAYERS FROM EACH NFL TEAM WILL COUNT TOWARD YOUR SCORE. In the Super Bowl, ALL your players count toward your score. Here is to next year! lol

I don't think you're missing anything, although defenses still seem to score a decent number of points in this format, especially in cold weather games. About the only thing you can guarantee from your defense is that they will play. I'd feel a lot better about my entry if there were 5-6000 participants than the 8000+ we actually had.

I have no players from: NO, GBP, NEP, SDC, PHI. Looking for a NYJ/IND vs MIN.

Peyton Manning $29 0.00

Austin Collie $14 0.00

Indianapolis Colts $9 0.00

Cincinnati Bengals $8 0.00

Ray Rice $16 0.00

Derrick Mason $12 0.00

Mark Sanchez $13 0.00

Thomas Jones $14 0.00

New York Jets $7 0.00

Brett Favre $25 0.00

Adrian Peterson $25 0.00

Minnesota Vikings $9 0.00

Tony Romo $26 0.00

Marion Barber $14 0.00

Kurt Warner $21 0.00

Arizona Cardinals $8 0.00

Looking over some other rosters, I may not have the juice in the SB to win. I'm hoping other teams that are fairly well balanced knock out the heavy SB teams and I picked better starters. My best case scenario only leaves me 6 players in the big game.

I took a different approach. I don't think you need players that set you apart in the SB. That's where the tie-breakers come in and I took a few $2 players to increase my number of players for the first tie breaker. I also wanted to take players in the first round that if they don't advance they will at least score points to help in the second tie breaker. Doubtful if it ever gets to the third tie breaker but I have a few $2 players to help there as well.

Hey Doug, any chance we could get some stats on the maximum number of active players per team? Not sure if that makes sense - for example, if I search for all teams with exactly 3 players playing this week, it returns teams with, say, three Packers. So really, they only have two players playing this week (since the third won't count).

I am predicting a MIN - IND Superbowl. I decided not to spread myself around to too many teams but keep my players from the teams that I thought would advance past week 1. So, no players from ARI, NEP, PHI, etc (except Brad Smith because I liked him for a $2 value). If my predictions are wrong, then of course I won't make it past the second cut, but I thought that the winning team would have to take some risks like that. Players in Green are from Wildcard Teams (hoping to get me past the first round of cuts). Players in Purple are my anticipated Superbowl participants.

Peyton Manning $29

Reggie Wayne $23

Dallas Clark $26

What I liked about their approach was the "thinking out of the box" angle - assume that not many went that direction. Agree that using that many defenses may not yield the optimal result, but I think these types of angles are the type that can get someone into the finals. This thing is 50% skill and 90% luck anyway, so I agree that an "Urban" type of player will ultimately decide it.

I clearly miscalculated how many points it would take to get to round 2, as the sim shows only a 23% chance
I was very tempted to hope to squeak through week 1, but with so many contest teams and so many different SB teams people would be choosing, I knew week one would be a bear. And the fiendish part of this contest was having to survive week 1 with throw-away one game players. The sim indicates that on paper I planned it perfectly, my teams checks in around 3900 out of 4000 that will make it.Even if the brackets go exactly like I laid out, I'm still sure there will be teams with more Minn and SD players than I have. With how tough it was to plan out a contest team path to get to the SB with Minn / SD, it will be interesting to see how others did it.

Peyton Manning $29

picked 4 teams I thought would advance and picked 2 players from each of those teams then filled in will left over cap room. rice mcnabb/westbrook are the fill ins. we are light this week, so we need to get lucky, not sure how many entries

Went big with Colts, although no Addai/Wayne/Clark. Tried to be a bit different in that regard.

Wanted to just get by this weekend. The sim has this team at 4087 iirc, so I think I accomplished that. Now just have to see what happens.

Just looking at my team now though..I'm not thrilled. I had not planned on Wells and Bush but for some reason they fell into my final iteration. Late night tweaking last night seems just so-so  .

Put my money on a Packers Colts super bowl, also thinking Eagles & Ravens win a game or two. Tried to pick players that should see a lot of touches along with my wildcard Tamme in the super bowl  . Should have enough wildcard weekend players to advance the first week.

WR - Derrick Mason - 12

WR - Julian Edelman - 11

So is Tashard Choice the new goal line back for Dallas? If so what a boon to those with Choice and what a body blow to teams with Barber and to a lesser extent Jones.

After a million combos I settled on 2 teams that I think have a shot but that will be less favored as my main entry. I went heavy QB (4 total) as that's a :lmao: position in this contest.

Colts - 6 players $98. Yes Clark, No Wayne.

Bengals - 1 player $2. Just Quan Cosby. Actually got a little $ out of him.

Patriots - 2 players $19. Sammy Morris is almost a must play at that price IMO.

Kinda regret turning away from being Cowboy-heavy as I had originally been. Edelman is a bit of a shot in the dark - you never know with Belichick.

Ravens - 2 players $21. I think Flacco is good value and I wanted to have 4 quarterbacks. Also an angle of my strategy is to actually go with 2 players in the head-to-head games of the teams I don't have in the SB, figuring I then will get the needed 2 to advance.

Jets - 1 player $2. Just Brad Smith given that he will see time in the wildcat and having a $2 guy that gets guaranteed playing time is a rare thing. Didn't favor the offenses in this game all the way around.

Vikings - 1 player $2. Just Kleinsasser. Guy with at least the potential to get a random TD. Stayed away from Minny and NO (like I bet most in this contest did). Had to skimp somewhere.

Cowboys - 1 player $9. Only Crayton. I'm really getting a feeling I shoulda gone Cowboys instead of Cards right about now but again I figured there would be more folks that did that.

Cardinals - 6 players $74. The concept is this. Basically zig where others zag. You have a team that can pile up points at that has experience winning playoff games. You have a guy in Fitzgerald who has been outrageous in these spots. With Boldin's possible absence, the other guys move up in value as well.

Eagles - 1 player $23. Just McNabb. I was tempted to consider the Eagle route as well but 3 road games is just a tough one to bank on. McNabb has been known to light it up in the playoffs before.

Saints - 0 players. :drive: I think I goofed here.

Chargers - 0 players. :wall: I KNOW I goofed here. But again if the premise is that I'm rolling with the Colts...

Packers - 0 players. I bet my fortune on the Cards so I felt it made sense to go away from this team.

The other concept is that rolling with the QBs will possibly make up for my lack of players at other positions.

This week. 10 players will count

Next week. 9 players will count

I clearly miscalculated how many points it would take to get to round 2, as the sim shows only a 23% chance
I figured that this could be a much bigger problem than many gave credit for. Which is why I scrubbed the load-up-on-bye-week-teams strategy.I think next week people will also suffer from the only two players from a team rule, as some folks might not have many players scoring if they went hog wild on only two teams.

We get it...too complicated for you.

Philip Rivers $28 0.00

Vincent Jackson $21 0.00

Antonio Gates $24 0.00

Nate Kaeding $14 0.00

Carson Palmer $19 0.00

Joe Flacco $14 0.00

Felix Jones $8 0.00

Miles Austin $22 0.00

Shaun Suisham $6 0.00

Kurt Warner $21 0.00

Aaron Rodgers $30 0.00

Just call me the 7 QB guy...8 if you include Brad Smith. Wonder if anyone took all of them.

I do recall jettisoning Greene to work Palmer into the equation. that was a mistake.

I really didn't put as much strategy as I wanted, so I ain't too optimistic, but I absolutely loved the contest. Kudos to FBG for a great idea. Quite the brainteaser.

I figured whoever is gonna win has the two QBs from the Super Bowl teams, so I guessed SD and Minny. If I can roll in the game with Rivers, Gates SD Def, and Favre, Harvin, ADP, I'll be interested.

I think I made a mistake with not enough Packers. But I also think I wished I had spent more time thinking about ignoring a position. TEs were expensive, in hindsight, and it never occurred to my dumb ### to just ignore them.

Donald Brown $9 0.00

Reggie Wayne $23 0.00

Matt Stover $10 0.00

Philip Rivers $28 0.00

Antonio Gates $24 0.00

San Diego Chargers $10 0.00

Julian Edelman $11 0.00

Thomas Jones $14 0.00

Shonn Greene $7 0.00
