The 49ers have agreed to terms with dynamic return man LeRoy Vann of Florida A&M. He will have great opportunity to make team, contribute.

The 49ers have landed free-agent CB Patrick Stoudamire of Western Illinois, according to his agent

West Viginia QB Jarrett Brown has agreed to terms with 49ers, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus.

1. Matt Barrows mattbarrows

Add CB LeRoy Vann and FS Chris Maragos to the UFA haul. Vann might be the best punt returner on the team ..

Hmm, this draft was almost Raider-ish, but nice overall and left me with a good feeling. Looks like no more excuses for Smith this year. Same coordinator, weapons all around, stud lineman, and stout defense. If his performance isn't in line with the top third of the QBs this year, then he'll never be more than just a career backup.

I like all the extra signings...still not seeing a change of pace type RB, maybe they aren't done yet. Great weekend, let's get them boys in shape coaching staff!

Maiocco is not the only one to bid farewell today...

LeGarrett Blount talked to Singletary and has decided to sign with the Titans instead!!

He said he likes his chances better there; in his defense - he's right he can step in and fill the LenDale White void very nicely!

This helps Gore's value as well I think Blount would have vultured many TD's from Gore...

not a big deal really...coffee/dixon/blount was a cluster of the same type of back.

Maiocco's Blog Farewell.

Looks like we're losing the best Niner beat writer.
that sucks...I think my employer will be happy since I won't be checking is site every hour. wonder where he'll end up, unless i missed it while speed reading.
Per MB's twitter, he stated MM won 't be going far. Theres a rumor on the webzone that MM will still be covering the 49ers but for ESPNsf.

May 3rd we will know. I hope he's still covering the niners. He's the reason why i got on twitter.

I doubt they will go too run heavy. Addressing the oline is as much in the interest of the passing game as it is for the run game.My concern with the niners is their super-conservative game management philosophy. It seems whenever they're up by like a FG the playcalling changes as if they're up by 3 TDs. Run Run Run punt. Playing not to lose is not the way to go.

Anyone worried they might try to run the ball too much and neglect all the talent they have in the passing game?

I don't. I think they'll be able to run to set up the pass like they've wanted to under Singletary.Threat of a physical run game, very good receiving options both outside and inside, more time to throw the ball due to line upgrades and more TOP due to an improved defense ... I expect our passing offense to improve a notch or two (maybe 11th best in the league?) while we rely on a dominant ground game as our bread and butter.

ESPN Locals have been really good at stealing local football beat guys. They grabbed Rich Cimini off the Daily News week before the Draft. They're clearly selling some job security or something you aren't getting in print....

According to the San Jose Mercury News, the 49ers have offered a free-agent contract to former UC Davis wide receiver Bakari Grant, who was in Santa Clara over the weekend for a tryout. Grant would be the 10th WR on the roster, not counting Isaac Bruce, who has yet to file retirement papers.

I lil late to the party, but the 9ers locked up P-Will today thru 2016 and made him the highest paid MLB ever...money well spent, bring the the pain BamBam!

looks like locking up Vernon is next and then Goldson. I think A. Smith, Manny, Franklin, and Baas are gonna have this season to prove their worth before they see any extensions.

Also, reading some other 9ers news it sounds like Baas might have more value than I previously thought...he could be a great asset if he has the ability to play both guards and center.

Guard. You might say the true competition is at left guard where David Baas will try to hold off first-round draft pick Mike Iupati. But if Iupati were to supplant Baas - and I fully expect he will - you have to wonder about the repercussions. First let's talk about Iupati. Both acting GM Trent Baalke and offensive line coach Mike Solari described Iupati as special, the type of guard who only comes along every few years. Iupati is massive, he moves that bulk like a man who weighs 250 pounds and he's comfortable at left guard. All that seems like a very bad omen for Baas, a former 33rd overall pick who had trouble cracking the starting lineup when he first arrived with the 49ers and who has dealt with injuries in recent years. Baas also is playing on a one-year contract.

But if Baas is dislodged, it might put pressure on two other positions. (This is what Jimmy Raye was anticipating when he said that intra-squad competition breeds success). Baas also has played right guard in the NFL and center in college. The 49ers fully expect Chilo Rachal to blossom in his third year, but he was inconsistent last year. Having Baas on the bench puts more pressure on Rachal. It also will be interesting to see whether Baas snaps the ball this offseason. He played center - and played well - his senior season at Michigan. Eric Heitmann is the unquestioned starter at center. But there are question marks about his backup, Cody Wallace.

Meanwhile, here's what Rachal recently told 49ers.com about his mindset this season: "It's more serious now, because I know what to do and now I just have to do it versus last year. In the beginning, I wasn't playing at a high level but towards the end I picked it up and started playing good ball. I just have to use what I did at the end of last season to continue to get better and not have the same season this year. I want to make last year my worst season."

9ers have some tough choices to make and maybe even tougher contracts to work out...wonder what they will do? I definately see them signing V.D. and Goldson. I could see Hill and Morgan being let go, if their $ wanted gets too high especially if they have V.D. and Crabs locked up. They can run that 2 TE setup and then they could fill in someone opposite Crabs (Ginn maybe?). I think A. Smith and Manny will have to wait and see how they play this year...same with A. Franklin who isn't listed for some reason. 2011, I can see them keeping Rachal for sure if he matures this year. I'd hate to see them lose Frankie, but RBs just get abused...not sure how much they'd have to spend on him and he's getting close to 30.

So happy about the PWillis extension.

This is from Matt Barrows:

Key Niners signed through 2010:

TE Vernon Davis

S Dashon Goldson

WR Jason Hill

LB Manny Lawson

QB Alex Smith

Signed through 2011

RB Frank Gore

C Eric Heitmann

WR Josh Morgan

K Joe Nedney

G Chilo Rachal

While explaining the challenge of retaining information in the heat of battle, 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye delivered another of his famous malapropisms. "What happens when Joey Porter is coming at you? Or Manny Lawson? Or Paris Hilton?" Think he meant LB Parys Haralson?

Bill Walsh, the only San Francisco 49ers head coach of any significance, used to have a saying about Steve DeBerg, his starting quarterback before Joe Montana took over the reins for good halfway through the 1980 season.

DeBerg, he said, was “just good enough to get you beat.”

He wouldn’t ever embarrass you. He wouldn’t get you blown out. However, DeBerg had this maddening way of playing up or down to his level of competition, and always making a critical mistake, whether it be an interception, a fumble, or a more innocuous screw-up like a bad read or a poor throw to a wide open receiver.

By hook or by crook, the guy just found a way to lose, and eventually he sapped the confidence of the team around him as well. Walsh went 2-14 with DeBerg in 1979 and finally gave him the hook for good when Montana was ready.

Alex Smith is our Steve DeBerg :lmao:

...and you don't have a strong leader like Bill Walsh to get rid of him.More specifically, the leadership has been so invested in their decision to pick Smith #1 overall that they have actively avoided putting any QB on the roster who could challenge him for playing time.

 The team is pathetic from top to bottom. A coach that can only produce one liners and drop his pants occasionally, an offense that is brutally uncreative, a qb that stinks but somehow is still starting after 5 years, a d that can't get it together and an oline that is full of 1st and 2nd round picks that can't block

You forgot the 2 real killers: Denise DeBartolo e John York

Yesterday was a low point for me as a fan. No team should lose a game like that, not even the Bills .. although they would because they're the Bills  I think as of yesterday Alex Smith has run out of excuses, and the longer he is starting, the longer we're content to wallow in mediocrity. I understand that Singletary does not believe Nate Davis is consistent enough to fit into his system, but (1) Smith is not a consistent QB, either, and (2) at least Nate Davis (from what I've seen in preseason) has the audacity to strive for greatness on the field.

Basically I'm not sure I can take watching Alex Smith play anymore. It's like watching Riley QB for Cal. Too frustrating.

It looks like there will not be a QB change unless the season is a lost cause. Even then, I doubt Sing will do it unless he feels his own job is threatened.

Check out the bolded below for a chuckle :hifive:

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/kawakami/2010...ear-is-himself/

-Q: You’ve made it very clear that David Carr was not brought here to compete for the starting job. And you’ve said that there’s no question Alex remains the starter now. Could you have done a better job in the offseason bringing someone in here to compete for the job?

-SINGLETARY: I guess… looking back on it, I would say this: I knew what I was doing when … the thought-process was. I wanted to bring someone in that in the event something happened to Alex, could come in and play.

But the thing that I wanted to accomplish this year, and it’s still a work in progress. I wanted Alex Smith to focus on executing the offense. For the first time you had a coordinator, you had a system that was in place.

You’ve had five or six coordinators. He’s played a little less than three years, with those changes, there’s no consistency anywhere. So the thing I wanted to do is make sure that he had some consistency without trying to compete with somebody else.

Let’s give him the opportunity to get out there and play football, work through some of the stuff that he’s had to work through, whether it’s this coordinator says you have to read this, this coordinator says you have to read that, this coordinator says you have to throw this way, this coordinator says you have to look there first.

So getting all that crap out and just having a system that he can run.

I think the only person that Alex Smith needed to really compete with this year is himself and get rid of some of the ghosts that he already has. That’s the competition I felt was the most important thing for him to get rid of.

And I think he’s working through that. I think he’s doing a good job of working through that.

-Q: How is he doing at competing with himself?

-SINGLETARY: I think he’s doing a decent job.

Note that Singletary said that Jimmy Raye's job was safe, the day before Raye was fired. He either is not running the ship, is full of crap, or both.

This week they get a vulnerable Eagles team at home. If the Niners win, they'll get a pass for a couple more weeks. If they lose, it'll set up the Raiders game as doomsday for Smith and/or Singletary. If the Niners go to 0-6, ending in a loss against the hapless franchise across the bay, there will be a change at QB and probably at head coach. If they win against the Eagles and/or the Raiders, Smith will make it through to the bye week (9), possibly to be replaced against the Rams in week 10.

I really want to see Nate Davis get on the field. Similar to Gradkowski across the bay, the team just seemed to have a spark when he was on the field. Preseason or not, I want Davis to get at least one game this year.

What's the worst that could happen - the Niners lose by a few touchdowns more? A loss is a loss...at least see if he can flash something we've seen Alex Smith can't offer.

I really sucks being a fan of this team with the crappy owners.

ETA - I'm still furious they didn't make a move for McNabb. With Donovan at the helm SF would be a legitimate contender...

Agree with all the hate in here so far. If you want to be an optimist, though, the schedule is about to get really easy after the Eagles game. If Singletary hasn't completely lost this team (and for the record, I think he has), they might be able to rally in the second half. It's a shame, because the rest of the division is far worse than even I anticipated (I'm looking at you, Arizona).

At least SF put one team in the postseason this year...

I remember all the people piling on the Titans about this time last year. By the end of the year nobody wanted to see TEN make the playoffs. SF is in a much better division to catch from behind than TEN was last year. Just sayin'.... it's a long season. I'll admit I'm a Singletary fan though. Always will be.

Gotta agree here. Niners have always been a bad road team... So with 3 on the road and the one home game against the champs it's not a complete shock that they're 0-4. The 2 "blowouts" they were very much in the game at halftime in both until implosions in the 2nd half due to inept offense and the defense finally just couldn't sustain anymore... Last week should have been a win, but then again you could've said the same thing about the saints game. With 5 of the next 6 at home against mediocre competition, it's very possible for them to be back within .500 by the bye week. The niners are a streaky team and with the home/away games setup the way it is, it's even more exaggerated this yr...

Call me Jed York, but even with DeBerg at QB, I gotta agree here....

Can we get the OP to change this to the in season thread?

Anyhow, there were reports the Yorks wanted to hire Holmgren before going with Singletary this year.

There are now new reports they'll go after Holmgren in the offseason.
