McCarver's comment, after Fielder was thrown out at home (paraphrased): "If Lamont had it to do over again, he probably wouldn't send him."No further comment necessary.
The same Hall of Fame broadcaster who was talking about Barry Manilow one night earlier

I am at peace with this. Does the parade go down Harlan or Corbett this year? My monies are on Corbett.

Scoring Fielder from first with no outs on a double seems crazy when you say it. When I saw the bounce the ball took off the wall, I did think there was a chance, and that is the time Lamoint had to make the call. However the ball had lost momentum and did not travel too far. Once I saw he hit the relay guy I knew Fielder was going to be out, but it was a lot closer than I thought it would be. With two outs you take that chance. With no outs you don't. That simple.

I think Fielder would have made it with a head first slide to the outside of the plate. I am not sure if Fielder knew the ball was on him. Not sure how much Peralta was telling him. The play just makes me sick. He just should have stayed at third. He may be quick for his size, but he is just too big of a guy to be doing that.

•In The World Series, teams that have gone up 2-0 at home in the series have gone on to win the series 80.6% of the time (29-7)

A lot of focus on Lamont.

Lamont doesn't swing a bat. Or hit a ball.

Neither does the Tigers lineup, and that's our biggest problem. We knew the bullpen would be an issue, that's a bed we have to sleep in, but the bats have to hit if we stand a chance. So far except for garbage time game 1 we haven't.

Road games. Left handed pitchers. Solid teams. Those are 3 things they have a hard time with.

One shred of good news is that the first 2 things will be missing the next 2 games.

A couple of quick takeaways from this game:

1. Fister is not getting nearly enough love for his pitching performance. The guy took a liner of the noggin and acted like it didn't happen. He walked the next batter then proceeded to mow down 12 straight. If Detroit finds a way to score a couple of runs and get him the win doesn't his performance put him somewhere close to the bloody sock category of baseball lore?

2. If you're teaching a high school team the importance of a double-cut relay then show them the tape of the Blanco-Scutaro-Posey relay to get Fielder. Scutaro is positioned perfectly behind Crawford (down the 3rd base line) just in case Blanco overthrows Crawford (which he did, rather than throwing through him). Most the time the trailing man in a double-cut isn't needed but this is a great example of why it should be practiced.

Fister is a great pitcher. His numbers are not great because he was fighting injuries most of the season. It is a shame Detroit has not given him any run production to back up his great performances.

Have to say that bunt the Giants laid down was picture perfect too and a critical play. Good Fundamentals wins games.

He had nasty movement all night. I was shocked when he stayed in the game after getting tagged in the head, then got 12 straights out after one walk

Genius Lamont ####ed the Tigers only shot at a run in that game. I can't stand that that old fool and McClendon will be back next year.
I usually hate Lamont and wish he would have been fired years ago but that was the right call. Despite Fielder slowing down when he was coming to third (thinking he was getting stopped), despite him running on the inside of the line, despite the ####ty slide and despite he's a fat ###...it took a perfect relay throw to get him by 3 inches. Tigers needed to take a lead in that game, and it was pretty obvious why after.
:2cents:He should have sent Santiago last year, I think he made the right call tonight.
 Tigers needed a lead yes, but they were not desperate. It was the 2nd inning and with Delmon's double they were sitting pretty with runners on 2nd/3rd and no outs. It's way too aggressive a call in the 2nd inning of a 0-0 game. There was absolutely no need to take a chance there. I've wondered for a couple years what Lamont and McClendon actually bring to the table for this team, and I'll just keep on wondering.

About Fister..he really pitched a great game and still think his stuff was very good when Leyland yanked him. Was really hoping Leyland would let him finish that inning. I agree it was a great relay play, when Fielder saw Posey getting ready for the catch he should have knocked him into the first row of seats and made sure there was no play.

Agree to disagree, most think it was the right call. :shrug:We move on...

Posey was well in front of the plate. If Fielder had taken him out, there would have been a brawl.

At the time, I disagreed with sending him because of the situation. With benefit of hindsight, it was the right call because runs were at a premium. But obviously nobody knew the Detroit bats were going to be shut down for the rest of the night.

In hindsight Lamont has already stated he made the wrong call. And Leyland said Lamont got a "bit overagressive" which translates to "You stupid old fool, that was just a horrible move" but Leyland would never throw his gambling buddy under the bus.Poor Ilitch. They're going to kill him before the series is even over.

Very true. Plus Fielder has a history of being on SF's bad side when he was playing with Milwaukee. There might have been a riot.

At that point I would trade a riot for a run.

Home team has held serve, nothing more nothing less. Series doesn't get good until the road team wins a game.

11 teams have come back to win the World Series after being down 2-0. I think if the Tigers want to really put the cherry on top of this painful season, they'll win the next three then lose game six in dramatic fashion to force an agonizing game seven. Par for the course really.
I can only dream of a painful season like the one Detroit is having.

The last time a team came back from an 0-2 deficit to win the World Series was in 1996, when the Yankees came back from 0-2 to beat the Braves 4-2. In the history of the seven game series, only 9 other teams have accomplished the same feat, and only one team has come back from 0-3 -- the 2004 Boston Red Sox.

Tigers going to make history and be the 11th team to come back

I disagree. I harp a lot about pitch count, and this was another situation. Fister was at about 115 pitches after 6 innings. He rarely goes more than a few pitches beyond that. Despite how well he had pitched, I say you bring in someone else to start the 7th with a good rhythm - no one on; clean slate. Verlander's a rare exception, but you can't fight the numbers.

•In The World Series, teams that have gone up 2-0 at home in the series have gone on to win the series 80.6% of the time (29-7)
If each game was a coin flip, the odds of the Tigers winning would be 18.75% (6 out of 32 possible outcomes), which matches closely with that. The Tigers are definitely in a hole, and they absolutely have to start hitting the ball or this series will be over this weekend. But at least there is a chance and this is far from over.

Giants are 3:1 favorites to win the WS at this point.

My complete outsider opinion: I would have skipped Sanchez entirely and pitched Scherzer tonight.

Come back with JV in Game 4, especially since he only went 4 innings in Game 1.

Take the giants then, they should be 5 to 1.

She sang it (or God Bless America or Take Me Out to the Ballgame) during the 2010 playoffs as well. She did a duet with Ben Gibbard then.Tonight's version was pretty lame. Those bombs bursting in air only did so because they were so filled with ennui.
