***2013 Chicago Bears Offseason Thread*** (2 Viewers)

Let's get the Roach deal done already. We need this guy back more than anyone else. Don't make a mistake, Phil. He's been groomed and brought along slowly. Keep him!!!

I think that the Bears need to add at least two OL-I'm thinking one through free agency, one with an early draft pick. I'm not ready to give up on Carimi at tackle-yes he was bad last year but there's a good chance that the knee was still an issue. Ideally they find a LT, keep Carimi/Webb at RT and acquire a guard. LT seems to be the problem though-I don't know if one will be available with the 20th pick, and aside from Jake Long-who probably is not affordable-I don't know what the free agent pool offers either.

I'd be very happy if one of the two elite guard prospects was available at 20

If they sign a RT, wonder if that means its over for Gabe? I really don't see him as a guard.

Jensen saying he sees Gabe competing at guard, regardless of what happens. Myers and Loadholt should both be great value pickups. Have to get Roach back, though.

I don't think Carimi's final chapter at RT has been written yet, I still hold out hope it was the injury and lack of strength that was the reason for his performance. However even if he does washout as a RT I think he played well enough at G to have a spot on this team. Obviously that's not the ideal situation for him or the Bears, but IMO his floor is an average G.

As for Roach I think you're right, the Bears have invested time in him and it would suck to lose him just as he's needed. That being said it sounds like he's drawing too much interest to remain a Bear.

Surprised to see Jonathan Scott get cut, I thought he was a good value performed given the circumstances. Hopefully that means that Brown is making strides?

And on a final note, there is only 1 thing I need to see to feel better about this offseason, cut Kellen Davis.

I was holding out hope for Carimi also  If we get a Loadholt, Bushrod or somesuch and move Carimi to guard, so be it, hopefully it works out as an upgrade at two positions.

Oh an just a rant here, but this afternoon start for FA sucks. I understand changing it from midnight, that made sense, but how do they ignore 7am or 8am and roll with 4pm? Idiots.

its smart for the NFL, sports talk is speculating all morning, and then news breaks and more coverage. the NLF gets people to talk FA all day long.we had a decent amount of post today based on speculation, and we will be checking back, all day till we get actual news.

I can't believe they might not bring back Urlacher. Come on! Have to at least get Roach. Going to be a crazy few days now.

I don't know how we can make any significant moves right now. Aren't we like 6-8Mil under the cap after franchising Melton, and only have 1 starting LB under contract, am I missing something? Surprised we haven't made any cuts recently to get us ready for today. I'm hoping for anything we can do with OL, TE, and LB.

Hopefully they are just waiting until they get someone new inked before dropping Davis.

And damn, my online feed for the Score (I'm in Texas) has stopped broadcasting, guess I’m just going to have to keep pressing F5 and counting on you guys for my up to the minute updates.

Hopefully the next two days go well for the team.

You might be right, but IMO all this speculation sucks too. If they had actual FA activity happening at 7am there would have still been tons of speculation last night and today would be an all NFL newsday anyway.

This. Without shoving a bunch of cap out into the next few years the Bears will have to look at value players.

Wow, can't believe they pulled in Bennett. Not really sure how I feel about it either. The years in Dallas were nothing to write home about and there were questions about his mental committment to the game. He absolutely proved all the doubters wrong in NY, I hope it was a permanent change.

The track record of Cowboy castoffs in Chicago isn't very awesome. Roy Williams, Marion Barber, Sam Hurd, ugh.

However you feel about Bennett, it's a big improvement.
We will see. If he brings performance like the did last year in NY, awesome. If he reverts back to what he was in Dallas for years, not so much. There was a reason Dallas didn't want him back.

you cant just looks at catches we did not get a Big WR pretending to be a TE, this guy can block. we got a real TE that can play all downs.

I'm not looking at just catches, I've lived in Dallas for a decade. Martellus has always been a physcial specimen who can play TE when he wants to. In Dallas he was pretty unmotivated and it showed. The flashes were there but overall he didn't get offered another contract in Dallas because of what's between his ears. Like I said, he sure corrected it last year in NY and if that's what Chicago is getting I'm stoked. I'm just concerned that of his 5 years in the league he's only had one where he looked 100% focused.

its a similar concern I have, when a guy only plays well in a contract year.was he used differently in Dallas compared to NY?

Absolutely, he was the #2 behind Witten and seldom got the opportunites to make plays as you would expect. It was hard to tell how much of that was because Witten is awesome and how much was because Bennett would run the wrong route. He's always had the skill and size, but rarely showed it consistently on the field.

I think part of his Dallas issue was that he didn't react well to being the number 2 guy behind one of the better TE's in the league Whitten. He really had no chance to break out and be the man there. Romo and pretty much all of the city of Dallas loved Whitten. When he went to NY he had the chance to be the number 1 guy, and he seemed to respond well. Hopefully that will be the difference in Chicago in that we are bringing him in to be that number 1 TE for the next 4+ years. Not saying he couldn't have been more mature and handled the situation in Dallas better, but the guy had no chance to be a starter and get significant playing time that didn't involve him being the extra blocker on the line.

Also if a deal is imminent they can cut, and restructure any deal. Money can be found and they are not tied to just spend 6-8 million this off season.

Quick update on NFC North: Reggie Bush reportedly headed to visit with Lions, Packers reportedly leading for Steven Jackson.

Yeah that reason is called Jason Witten, good signing here and certainly a major upgrade
Witten is not the reason MB wasn't offered a contract. Witten was in the middle of a streak of multiple consecutive pro bowls when Dallas spent a second round pick on Martellus Bennett. MB was not drafted to be a blocker, he was drafted to be a weapon on the other side of Witten. Unfortunately he was unable or unwilling to put all the pieces together or by the time he did Romo no longer trusted him.

His situation with us will be much closer to his situation with the Giants, so I'm thinking that's what I will use to evaluate him. Going back to the Dallas days doesn't make much sense.

in case some bears fans wonder how the black unicorn came to be.

Q: How is your conditioning with your extra weight? Bennett: "I'm kind of bigger than I was. I'm more muscular than I was in the past. I actually started lifting weights really, really hard. But I'm in the best shape I've ever been. Ask any of the guys in the camp, I'm stronger than I've ever been, I'm faster than I've ever been. I could run all day. I'm kind of like a black unicorn out there. It's amazing to watch. You go out there and you see a big, black guy running down the field, it's usually me. So I'm pretty good out there. It's been great so far."
