***2013 Chicago Bears Offseason Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

GM Phil Emery suggested that he's willing to give FB/TE Evan Rodriguez another chance.

Coming off a very quiet rookie season, Rodriguez has been arrested twice this offseason. Although Emery said he's "extremely" disappointed, he still envisions a larger role for Rodriguez this year. The Bears don't have any other realistic options at fullback right now.

He must have changed his mind over the weekend:

Chicago Bears release fullback Evan Rodriguez

By Marc Sessler

Around the League Writer

The Chicago Bears have run out of patience with Evan Rodriguez.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the second-year fullback would be released following his two offseason arrests, according to a source informed of the decision. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune first reported the move, and the team officially announced it Monday afternoon.

Rodriguez was picked up in May on charges of DUI, speeding and an improper lane change. In March, Rodriguez -- the team's fourth-round pick in 2012 -- was arrested in Miami and charged with resisting an officer without violence and disorderly intoxication, charges that eventually were dropped.

Rodriguez was told his release wasn't for on-field reasons, the source told Rapoport.

In a related move, the Bears on Monday signed fullback Tony Fiammetta, according to his agent, Dennis Boyev. Fiammetta comes to Chicago after stints with the Carolina Panthers, Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots. He'll compete with Harvey Unga for snaps, but Fiammetta hasn't appeared in a game since 2011.

The release of Rodriguez -- who also plays a little tight end -- comes one day after the Bears traded away offensive lineman Gabe Carimi to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a late-round pick.

General manager Phil Emery this month talked about welcoming back the underperforming Carimi with "open arms" and said Rodriguez would receive another chance. Neither proved true as coach Marc Trestman aims to build a team of players focused on the task at hand.

Shady that Emery keeps saying he's onboard with players and then cuts them shortly after.
Maybe he was simply trying to move him (thus keeping the option that he might cut him outright quiet) - then when he couldn't get any takers, just released him.

Can't believe Carimi is gone, I was a big fan of the pick and kept telling myself when he's healthy he's a starter. Kinda weird they didn't keep him around long enough to see him at camp isn't it? Seems like he could have a Columbo type post-Bears career if he's healthy.

Marc Columbo is exactly who I was thinking of. The Bears released Columbo and he want on to have six years of productive play for the Cowboys. He wasn't spectacular, but he was solid. I'm afraid that is what we might see from Carimi.

There must be something we are not hearing about in this Carimi thing. Carimi was awful in pass pro, but he was actually quite good as a run blocker. They should have been able to move him to guard and take advantage of his run blocking skills, while minimizing his deficiencies as a pass blocker. And then let him develop as a pass blocker. You can never have enough good offensive linemen. Especially when you consider how very bad the Bears have been on the offensive line for so many years. So giving away an offensive lineman, basically for nothing, makes no sense.

The only thing I can imagine is that Carimi was not cooperating with the coaching staff in some way. Or they had told him he was moving to guard and he refused, or he was a cancer somehow. Otherwise this makes no sense. They don't gain much financially by trading him. They would have seemed just as well off to let him come to camp and compete, just to see what happened. Then if he can't beat out the guys they have then cut him, or trade him if you can. But this trade seems to mean that they felt giving him away was addition by subtraction. I hope more information about this situation comes to light, because I would like to see some good reason that this makes sense.

According to ESPN the Bucs are expecting Carimi to win the starting RT job. If that occurs you really have to start to wonder about Emery. The Marshall trade was terrific. But his first draft has produced Jeffrey, and nothing else so far. McClellin may develop, but he has shown very little so far. Rodriguez is now gone. Hardin has shown nothing. Not exactly a stellar draft as it appears so far.

And going in to last season he seemed to think that the line would be okay with the personnel they had. He was proved to be way off on that. He did make a lot of moves to improve that this season, but you wonder about a guy who didn't recognize that was a problem last year. And what occured between last year and this year that last year we was willing to go in to the season with Carimi as the starting RT, and now he is willing to give Carimi away for a sixth round pick?

A new coach, offense, and offensive line coach is what changed from last year. But to ship Carimi out for an almost worthless 6th rounder means they decided there was absolutely no way Carimi would be a starter or a backup for Chicago. Like you said, there has to be a burnt bridge somewhere that we haven't heard about. I think he's only slated to make 1 and 1.3 million the next two years in Tampa and I think the Bears are eating .9 million in dead money by trading him. If he winds up being a starter in Tampa that's a steal.

Alshon hasn't done much yet. That draft sucked.

I believe that Jeffrey will be good. He showed flashes last season. I'm not so worried about him. I am worried about McClellin. I read today he was suffering from plantar fasciatis last season. He is supposed to be healthy now, so I hope that will help. Jeffrey has to continue to improve. And either Hardin or McClellin have to step up for this draft to be viewed as successful. They need to get at least two starters for this to be solid IMO.

NUTS.

A few days ago, Redeye Chicago put out its list of the top Bears draft pick busts in team history. Cade McCown, Rashaan Salaam and the just-traded tackle Gabe Carimi made the list, but standing not-so-proudly at No. 1 is receiver David Terrell, who was drafted by Chicago at No. 8 overall in 2001 but caught just nine touchdown passes in four years.

Terrell saw the list and made a call to the author of the story to protest. And then he gave current quarterback Jay Cutler what could be the biggest compliment of his life.

After he was asked by Redeye Chicago's Riley Blevins what he would have given to catch passes from Cutler, Terrell said, “I would have cut off both my balls. I'd give those up, no problem. You could have neutered me. I would have been neutered with a smile.”
I saw David Terrell go over the middle enough times to safely question if there's anything to cut off in the first place.

Oh the irony of a story about neutering being posted by Limp Ditka.

Anyone else thinking that the beloved should take a swing at FA Desmond Bishop?

I'd imagine he wants too much jack, but he'd be a nice fit.

Rotoworld:

The Chicago Tribune believes it's "worth wondering" if Brandon Marshall's hip will remain an issue into the preseason.
Marshall's January scope was billed as a "minor cleanup," but he got in very few reps during the Bears' offseason program, including minicamp. The Bears were no doubt exercising extreme caution with their No. 1 receiver, but it's possible he won't be 100 percent for the early days of camp. We're not worried about his status for Week 1. Marshall is locked in as a high-end WR1.

DL depth issue: McBride out for year.

Minor calf strain for Bushrod.

Long looking like an athletic freak at his size, but has no clue how to use his hands and feet. Extremely raw.

Briggs and Peanut taking over the D with the loss of Brian. Can't say enough good things about those two guys.

Wooton looking like the starter over McClellin. No surprise...Shea is never going to be an every down DE. I'll be watching Chandler Jones closely again to torture myself.

First day in pads

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — With an enthusiastic crowd of about 9,000 looking on, the Bears practiced in pads for the first time on an unseasonably cool Sunday morning at training camp.

"Guys really appreciate when people come out and watch us practice," coach Marc Trestman said in his opening remarks to the media. "It gets them going and gets them excited."

With players getting accustomed to wearing pads for the first time since last season, the pace of Sunday's practice wasn't as up-tempo as previous non-contact workouts Friday and Saturday.

In addition to shoulder pads, Bears players also began complying with a new NFL rule that requires them to wear knee and hip pads this season, something many haven't done in the past.

In the trenches Sunday, the defensive line appeared to outplay their offensive counterparts.

"I thought the defense had the jump start on us, and there were defensive players who had edges," Trestman said. "We have to clean up some of the things inside, and we'll do that. That's pretty normal for the first time; usually the defense has the jump and it usually evens out in the end."

After throwing three interceptions in the first two practices, Jay Cutler was not picked off Sunday. The only interception of the day came when cornerback Isaiah Frey ripped a Matt Blanchard pass away from rookie Marquess Wilson over the middle.

"I was really pleased with the quarterbacks; they took care of the football," Trestman said. "Jay was on in terms of finishing his progressions and getting to second and third receivers. We spread the ball around a lot today again. That's happened for three straight days, and that's a good sign."

Cutler was particularly sharp in a red-zone drill late in practice, hitting receiver Brandon Marshall and tight ends Martellus Bennett and Fendi Onobun with 15-yard touchdown strikes. While Marshall stands 6-4, Bennett and Onubun are both 6-6, and second-year receiver Alshon Jeffery is 6-3.

"We've got some tall guys with some girth on them," Trestman said. "It's certainly easier to see them with what's going on up front. It's always a good thing to have guys who can run like that and have strong hands and make plays. We're lucky to have them and excited about working with them each and every day."

For the first time in training camp, the Bears conducted one-on-one drills pitting receivers against defensive backs. Joe Anderson ran a nifty route to beat Kelvin Hayden, while Wilson outleaped cornerback Demontre Hurst to snag an underthrown jump ball.

"It was a good catch," Trestman said. "This is a game of one-on-one and contested throwing battles. We talk about it every day and we look at it hard: who won the contested throwing battle? Usually that's a point of emphasis on game days. It's turnovers, it's explosive plays, and usually a contested throw on either side of the ball is an explosive play. It's going to be a turnover or a catch that's going to get you big yards. That was evident that [Wilson] has the ability to make those plays. It was good coverage; two guys going up for the ball and one guy coming up with it."

Also for the first time in camp, Bears offensive and defensive linemen battled in a one-on-one pass rush drill. Players who stood out included rookie guard Kyle Long and defensive tackle Henry Melton.

"Iron sharpens iron and in my opinion this is one of the best defensive lines in the league," said guard Matt Slauson. "So it's great for us as an O-line to compete against them every day."

Defensively, Charles Tillman victimized Bennett with his patented "Peanut Punch," but the tight end recovered the loose ball. Craig Steltz later forced and recovered an Anderson fumble, returning it down the left sideline.

I just got around to thumbing through the 2013 media guide (ibt "look at me! I'm a season ticket holder!") and see the Kyle Long is listed as a defensive end? Is that just a misprint or is there something to see here?

depends, is Shea McClellin listed as the left tackle?

Webb demoted to 2nd team and Mills promoted to 1st team RT. Only took Trestman a few practices and one preseason game to figure out Webb was a turd. I'm starting to like Trestman.

Oh, and McClellin still sucks and has looked like a bum so far.

Mills and Long looking very impressive on the right side tonight. Webb sucking against 3rd stringers and in danger of not making the roster. Trestman and Kromer are actually aware of what's going on and not living in a dream world. :hifive:

Mcclellin looked better tonight. Jay still refusing to throw to anyone but Marshall.

I re-watched the first half to concentrate on Long and Mills. Very impressed. Mills was solid with a couple highlights (the Forte TD for one). Long is as explosive as a guard can be. It appeared to me that he needed to finish his blocks more often but his ability to hit the 2nd level is impressive.

Despite Bostic's big hit, I think he struggled in the traffic all game. I hope I am wrong but I see WLB.

That's not true, he also hit Donald Butler. I honestly have no idea what he was thinking on that throw. Often you can see that if he'd have led the receiver a little more, or put more loft on it, etc. there was a window there. On that pick I can't see any window. The only thing I can imagine is that he didn't see Butler.

And shouldn't this have been a fumble? And Bostic needs to simply walk away rather than stand over the guy and yap. Not cool.

Agree with most of this analysis, though I'm still not impressed with McClellin. My friends said the same about Bostic (big plays yes, every down plays not so much) but I thought he looked better than that. Briggs is raving about him, I don't remember Briggs having many good things about any rookie.

Long. Wow. He was crushing guys. Then again it was San Diego, but still

I think McClellin has potential. Was thrilled with what I saw in Long, Mills, and I think Bostic is a better option than DJ Williams at MLB. He's not Brian Urlacher and neither is anyone else. To compare him to probably the greatest MLB of the past decade is a bit unfair.

Right now Emery's 2013 draft is looking great. Even seventh-rounder Wilson looked great in this game and in the first one. 4 out of 6 picks looking like great values and solid players already.

Luke Kuechly might be

OL looks good for first time in I don't remember how long. Good LT and what appears to be 2 solid rookies over preseason. Webb probably won't make team. That's exciting!

Perhaps...but the Bears offense did a few things tonight:

1) Looked like a legitimate NFL offense.

2) Converted on 3rd and long...several times.

3) The O-line actually blocked people. Regularly.

And the defense has created turnovers all preseason.

Punching SB tix? No. Excited. Sure, why not.

Oh, if I had a nickel for every time I got excited about the season during August. I would probably own the Bears right now.

Liked what I saw (for the most part) last night.

1. Yeah, it was only the Raiders but it was an away game and I don't think the Raiders are that bad.

B. One thing that stuck out was the play calling. I liked the mix. Sure they're going to try a lot of different stuff in the preseason but it was nice to see some variety.

3.14: 90% sure those easy drops by the WR/TEs were just anomalies. Or at least I hope so.

XIX: Bostic and Long are looking like solid-to-very-good picks right now. Of course it is very early.

#THICKE

z: Trestman still looks a little like a lesbian bible salesman to me.

First year I've felt good about the team in years. Finally fixing the OL and no more "We like our players" garbage. Webb sucked again last night and likely to be cut. Some good young guys on both sides of the ball. More positive about this team than I have been in years. I'm thinking I was very short-sighted on the Trestman hire.

Cuts

Agree for the most part. Not as excited as you but I'm feeling ok, mostly because I think we may finally see some good OL play. Honestly my biggest concern right now might be Cutler. Just not sure he's ever going to get it.

I was very worried about how the D would respond to losing Lovie and Rod and Babich and so far it looks like there won't be a difference. Hoping it lasts when the real stuff starts. And we're going to find out what we have right off the bat because the Bengals are a very good, complete team.

I was kinda hoping Pope would make the 53. Like his size - nice big target for Jay when they go 2 TEs. Oh well.

I do like how the offense looked. And those saying "well, it was just the Raiders..." - what would any good tem have done? Gone up about 27-3 by half. At least it wasn't 10-3 at half.

Who is the backup te? I'm expecting Unicorn to miss time at some point
Ourlads.com is showing Maneri, Adams, and Onobun.. As backup tight ends. Surprised Pope got cut before Onobun?
Bears website lists Adams as the 2nd stringer - but yep, names are the same. As I said, I liked Pope (but I always have). I also hope they hang on to Fiametta at FB (yes, they still have those in football ;) He opened some nice holes for Forte and Bush.
