2013 Closers (2 Viewers)

Hanrahan stat line was ugly, but he got squeezed pretty badly on a few calls there. After he got over 25 pitches or so, he started laboring quite a bit, which is understandable considering it was a cold, miserable night and still early in the season.

I definitely think Bailey may get a few saves this year, but Hanrahan's stuff is still just fine. He was running it up there consistently 96-97 mph, and his slider was breaking hard - just too much.

Kelvin Herrera is filthy, he'll be closing games sooner than later.
Having the best stuff in the bullpen is hardly a guarentee of getting the closer job.
How secure is Holland's job? How is Kershaw's hip?

How many dumb things will you say this baseball season?

All good questions...
Holland's job is fine; he got a night off. Kershaw's hip is fine right now, still more of a concern than Strasburg's elbow.

Less than you by an order of magnitude.

All correct answers.
That's just it. The original post and your reply can both be correct. Having the best stuff doesn't always (or maybe even often) guarantee being the closer, but it's still very possible Herrera will be getting saves sooner than later.

About last night, sure, Holland got the night off because he threw 27 pitches the night before. A major point being that it took him 27 pitches to get the save following 2 other poor outings.

Can't we all just get along and agree it makes sense to own both guys right now?

If I had seen Fujikawa pitch before today, I wouldn't have drafted him.
Yeah, he stinks.
Cubs closers provide some serious entertainment.
Closers? more like the whole pen
More like the whole team?
My first impression is if you can lay off Fujikawa's sinker/splitter/forkball/whatever, I don't think he has the stuff or command to beat big league hitters.

Oh man, I've been vulturing saves all week (Jansen/Herrera) and was thinking how lucky I was to get one more outta Romo (we have weekly winners and I'm in first right now). So much for that. :kicksrock:

I do need a win though. :coffee:

Fujikawa does not look like a legit closer out there. His fastball is lively, but topped out at 94. Control was not good and he benefited from some borderline calls and poor swings by the Brewers. He left at least two low-90s fastballs out over the heart of the plate with a man on. I hope we can chalk it up to the rough weather conditions, but I fear Fuji will not be long for the job. Not sure who else they have though. Marmol? Russell?
Yup.

Bad day to own closers. Assume Romos safe but who's after Fujikawa? Marmol again?
Sveum mentioned James Russell and Shawn Camp after the game last week when Marmol and Fujikawa both blew up. Russell is the only reliable LHP option in the Cubs' pen and might be better used in other situations. Camp has career K/9 rate of just over 6 which isn't ideal. But Jim Johnson led the majors in SV last year with a lower strikeout rate than that. Baseball is a funny game.

Romo gave up two hits, no walks, had ten strikeouts and recorded six saves in his first six appearances this year. He also didn't have the normal time he usually has to warm up today. Sure he's safe?

@CarrieMuskat #Cubs Fujikawa may be headed to DL. Name isn't on lineup card
Would Russell be the guy?
Very deep league, but tossed a speculative add out there last night when I saw Fukijawa's fx pitch detail. That was single A quality pitching. Thinking about it in one of my weekly leagues too, obviously can't start Axford again but may just roll with 2 closers this week instead.

My roster was too tight to pick him up, but I took a shot when I saw pantagrapher's post (with the FAAB about to go off at 11). Camp was already owned.

FWIW, ESPN just now listed Fuji on the DL. Muskat, then pantagrapher beat them by about 45 minutes.

is Fernando Rodney a good buy low???
I wouldn't imagine so.

Not that I'd be against buying at the right price, but I doubt his owners are too worried and the 48 SVs/0.60 ERA are more on their mind than a couple of early season hiccups.

He was the 3rd closer off the board and I doubt his value has dropped much. That's pretty healthy value for a guy who just made a major, major leap forward in his 35 YO season and is now pitching more similar to his career norms. I don't have the numbers, but it seems like following up a monster season for a closer often doesn't work out so well (even for guys that are far better pitchers than Rodney).

On that note, based on what I assume is still the price of a Top 8 closer, I don't think I'd be buying.

the guy is over reacting to his stats so I'm confident I can buy at a reduce price. I'm just worried if he will complete fall apart. He only had one good year if I remember right.

He's had several good years. As long as he has one of the best change-ups, if not the best in baseball, he's going to be effective. He tends to be wild at times and he avoided the big inning last year which he's prone to, but I've always been a huge fan. I even wrote a song for him.

Any clue who's next in HOU? Still Wesley Wright? Josh Fields when he gets off the DL?

Veras has been awful, but the rest of the pen hasn't been great either.

I think it is Wright still. He has pitched decently since his first outing when he gave up 2 runs. He has 3.2, and given up only 2 hits and no walks and no runs. Only 1 K though.

Cruz pitched the 8th last night.

So Boggs just blew another one but Rosenthal also let up 2 runs in the 8th. Doesn't look like either of them want the job. What's the move here for closers? If someone gets this job and produces it could be great pickup since I'm guessing Motte won't be coming back this year.

I grabbed Mujica in one league, but who knows.
