2013 Hot Stove & Capella's Fabulous Cornhole Thread (2 Viewers)

Freeman extended with the Barves. Morosi tweeted that in the $100 million range (not clear on length).

Given how much 1Bs have been going on the open market, seems like a good signing though.

Three of the years were arbitration years so they were discounted somewhat. The big question is whether it was for six or seven years but in either case, he'll be moving to the new ballpark in Cobb County.

The Marlins signed Jeff Baker to a 2/$3.7M deal.

Baker and Garrett Jones could be a productive 1B platoon, not that it'll matter much.

Cleveland Indians signed free agent 1B Bryan LaHair to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
He only hit .230 in the Japanese League last year but that was because nobody could pronounce his name.

eeph with the jokes. keep it going my friend
Other than the remaining unsigned free agents, the hot stove has grown pretty cold. What else can you say about a NRI who is a hot spring and a couple of injuries away from being the 25th man on the Indians' roster? Did I mention he's a former All-star.

He and Jack Armstrong have to be the two of the most obscure All-Stars ever. Two AAAA players who put together about one hundred days of good baseball, and only made the team because those hundred days happened to be the first hundred of the season.

Now that's it's known the deal is 8 years at 135M, thoughts?

I'd like to toss in a vote for Lance Carter

I'd like to see Freeman put up another good year. 2013 is the only strong year on his resume and it was aided by a .371 BABIP. He had a sub-.800 OPS during his other two other seasons which isn't outstanding for his position. The Braves have seen a lot more of him than I have and it's their money.

Heyward has put up more WAR in around the same number of PAs. I don't know if the Braves' budget allows them to keep both long term but if not, it's an interesting choice they've made early in the Arbitration cycle.

The BABIP is high but Freeman was also at .340ish I think in 2011. I think .340-.350 is more realistic than .371 which is unsustainable for the non Trouts/Vottos of the world. I think Freeman's counting stats are legit but he is probably more of a .290 hitter, maybe even .280 than a .320... .290 and 24 HRs seems reasonable for this year.

Agree with the general sentiment, but I think they probably made a good move. I'd rather lock up a 24 year old up until his early thirties where he is more likely to improve, then lock up a 29 year old until his late thirties where he is more likely to decline.I think the Braves have had a pretty good track record in their development of players and allowing them to go when the costs have been prohibitive. I think Heyward may have higher upside, but he may be quite a bit more expensive to keep also, and I don't know if he necessarily will warrant his pay.

Also, I think Heyward is a Boras client, so he may not be willing to sign an extension.

Fernando Rodney signs 2 year, $14 mil deal with Seattle.

Perfect place to go for the aging reliever coming off a down year. Smart man.

"When you try me with a sorry reliever like Rodney, that's the result you gonna get. Don't you ever talk about me"

heyward is gonna be fascinating. Hes the ultimate WAR player (does everything well) but nothing spectacular yet and still hasnt lived up to expectations with the bat. Hes still very young too

Cards sign ROOGY Pat Neshek to minor league deal with invite.

Cards never met a situational pitcher they didn't like. He would make an ideal pair with SuperLOOGY Randy Choate, assuming he makes the team.

I like this one. Feels like the first player have added in 3 months.

I wish Nelson Cruz would hurry up and sign somewhere. I have no interest in him coming back to Texas, but I am oddly extremely interested in seeing which team takes a chance on him.

K-Rod back to Milwaukee for 1/$3.25M.

Could be a deep league LIMA stash in case Jim Henderson follows Axford and Turnbow into obscurity.

I cant believe that Fernando Rodney gets 14 million over 2 years, and K Rod only gets 3.25 million over 1 year.

Rodney is an average pitcher that had a completely ridiculous 2012, which is so out of line with everything he has ever done. And now he will be 37 ####### years old when the season starts.

Read an interesting take on this about the teams using old RPs to hold down young RP salaries in arb years. Maybe it is giving too much credit to front offices but it would also explain why teams apparently throw away money to sign old closers despite all the conventional wisdom.

Eno Sarris@enosarris 23h
Axford /Allen, Balfour /McGee, Johnson / Cook, Rodney /Farq. Yeah, @murphym45, are we sure teams aren't suppressing young arb RP salaries?

That's interesting although I don't understand why it's better to pay Johnson $10M than is it is to pay an arbitration eligible RP a closer's premium of $2M-$3M over what they'd make as a set-up guy. That's the most extreme case of the four given though.

ETA: In Seattle's case that's probably giving Jack Z too much credit. He just thinks Rodney is worth $14M because he was good two years ago.

If they keep it up, their entire bullpen is only going to be able to get about 8 outs.

The Mariners are currently interested in Cruz and meeting with him. Apparently they don't have enough dh types.

Arroyo to the Diamondbacks.
Kevin Towers has dealt away Jarrod Parker, Trevor Bauer and Tyler Skaggs and brought in Bronson Arroyo, Brandon McCarthy and Trevor Cahill.
no punchline? Oh wait the whole post is a punchline
Arizona is taking a different approach in valuing their young pitchers which is kind of interesting in itself. Parker has been better than Cahill so far but they're both 25 so the future is unwritten. Bauer is starting to smell like bust and anything could happen with Skaggs. The guys they've brought in are definitely more expensive than the arms they shipped out. Maybe they're just grittier

Koyie Hill has got a major league contract for 2014 after posting last year the slash line of .155/.183/.190.

On Opening Day he will have accumulated ten years of service time.
