2013 Hot Stove & Capella's Fabulous Cornhole Thread (1 Viewer)

So Reds are talking with Homer Bailey about a 6 year, 100-110M contract extension.

Extrapolating that out using some guru-esque metrics, I'd say that Kershaw's contract should have been in the neighborhood of 7 years, 2.2 Billion. Dodgers got a huge bargain there.

I want to see the other side of this story, but just how pathetic is the current Phillies management? "Ratting" on draft picks that don't sign with you? :ptts:

Ratting out a kid who only wanted proper representation is pretty low. MLB seems to be fairly content with the current system I doubt they want the NCAA sticking their nose into the process.

Also has the potential to make Philly look really bad if the kid wanted to sue them.

how the hell does capuano only get a minor league deal? Yea, he has injury concerns but he is a lefty and at worst league average pitcher

It's February 20th
OK and?
There wasn't any market for a 35 year old pitcher coming off a poor year. The later it gets teams are more reluctant to open a spot on the 40 man roster for a major league free agent. Cap was running out of time to get into a camp. He and his agent figured that with Dempster's retirement, this was his best shot.

well yes I understand why he signed it. was questioning what the hell the other 29 GMs were doing all winter that it came to him signing a minor league deal

They were all waiting for Paul Maholm to establish the market rate for mediocre crafty lefties

I'm with Moops on this. While Homer Bailey is collecting 100mil, I'm taking my chances that spending a combined 3 mil on Capuano and Maholm nets me a solid No. 4 starter.

Am i the only one who thinks that bailey contract is insane? Surprised there wasnt more mention of it.
I don't think it makes much sense for the Reds. I think its probably what he could have gotten on the open market right now, but he was still under team control this year. Of course, he's also only 27, so I'm not surprised he was able to command more money than some of the FA pitchers this offseason.

27. Has the pedigree. Seems to be coming into his own. Buster Olney was saying what marquee FA is going to want to go pitch in that park.

Tanaka a different animal but he got 6/155 with a 20mill posting fee. 6/105 for Bailey seems about right. Not an overpay.

I am liking the Anibal Sanchez contract more and more.

Santana is on the clearance table. 40-50% off his original demands. Morales and Drew both turned down 14 million and now are sitting at home watching the Olympics.

Cruz finally lands with the Orioles. 1 for $8 with incentives. While I'm not a fan of Cruz, can't see how anyone can consider this a bad signing. I'd raterh take a chance with Morales, though. No idea where he winds up now, Pittsburg maybe?

he rejected the qualifying offer right?
Yes Cruz rejecting the QO. 3 guys remain that did so - Ervin Santana, Kendrys Morales, Stephen Drew. Spots probably open up as injuries mount in spring training, but its hard to find a landing place for any of them right now.

I think drew is gonna sign somewhere for like 3/33 or so.

but I see morales signing a similar deal as Cruz

just got
I will be amazed if Drew gets a 2 year deal , I can't see anyone giving him 3. The loss of a draft pick seems to have killed any market for him. I really only see the Yankees and Red Sox as landing spots. I would hate to see the Sox sign him for anything more than 1 year at 5-6M.

Trout is worth it but that's crazy for a a 3rd yr player
Apparently some agents think it's a bargain. :loco:

@busterolney: View of some agents NOT involved in the Mike Trout talks: If the number doesn't begin with a '2' -- as in 200m+ -- it's light.

I guess I just dont understand the point of extending Trout now. Why not just take advantage of a few more low salary years and then give him a monster deal towards the end of his arbitration eligible period?

Because the closer he gets to the end of arbitration, the more likely he just decides to test free agency at the age of 26. If Trout gets even to say the last two years than there is no reason for him to really take an extension since he will get 20+ in arbitration anyways. Additionally prices are just going to continue to rise so you may be looking at a 26 year old Trout commanding 40-45M a year in FA and the Angels will probably not be able to outbid the Yankees or Dodgers.

Easy there......
