2013 Hot Stove & Capella's Fabulous Cornhole Thread (1 Viewer)

Surprised he got a major league deal. He has less than 500 PA in the past 4 years. And he plays the same position and bats from the same side as one of their top prospects in Bradley. Guess he is insurance to Bradley completely falling flat.

Must be nice to be able to toss almost a million dollars at someone like him
Not the usual way that Grady Sizemore and Insurance are used together.

He can probably be cut before Opening Day and get nothing.

That's usually the case with minor league deals. Sizemore got a major league contract and beeen added to the 40 man.

Since we're talking about 2007, the Dodgers signed Chone Figgins to a minor league deal. He fills a need if he has anything left and either Guerrero or Uribe disappoint.

Terms were not announced but I'm guessing one year for around $16M.

@TBTimes_Rays: #Rays will make "a significant baseball-related announcement" today. Sternberg, Silverman, Maddon will be there. Don't know any more yet.

I'll guess Price extension.

Meanwhile, in Twinsland:

The Twins have agreed to transfer starter Andrew Albers to the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), reports MLBTR's Steve Adams (via Twitter). Albers has agreed to terms with his new club as well, making the deal complete.

MLBTR learned that a deal was in the works two days ago. The 28-year-old Albers, who is represented by Blake Corosky, was a great story last year for the Twins. After being dug out of the independent Canadian-American Association after 2010, Albers became Minnesota's minor league pitcher of the year for 2013. He also saw his first big league action, posting a 4.05 ERA in 60 innings. Though he struck out only 3.8 K/9, Albers allowed only 1.1 BB/9 and generated a 43.5% ground-ball rate.

The move across the Pacific represents a nice opportunity for Albers, who faced an uphill battle at a big league rotation spot after the Twins' offseason addition of three free agent starters. With a salary reportedly set to land in the "high six figures," Albers stands to earn significantly more than he would have if he ended up in the minors. He also gets a chance to test the open market next year, as he will become a free agent after his season with Hanwha.

Felix Pie signed with Hanwha last month.

I held Pie on my minor league roster for years and years just knowing he was going to be the next breakout speedster. Never happened.

I pretty much decided I suck at Magic Baisbol after dropping him.

Haven't there been some questions about the health of Garza's arm/shoulder? I'm sure that's the reason for the discounted rate.

Really surprised Milwaukee was able to sign him at such a relatively low price.

Do they trade Gallardo?
I think they give the team a few months and then put everyone on the block if they aren't doing well. Gallardo and Lohse being chief among them.

Rays signed Balfour to a two-year deal.
Is that the "announcement?"
I'm just spitballing here but I don't think so. You don't release a statement like that, and have a press conference at a Tampa museum to announce Grant Balfour has signed.
I wouldn't think so either. I'll put my money on a Wil Myers extension.
Joe Maddon is the new coach of the Cleveland Browns?

The Brewers hold a 2015 option on Gallardo. They have a little time to build his trade value back up.
Of course, but there's value in trading a player that has years left vs forcing a team to try and re-sign.

Tampa Museum isn't for small-fry announcements.

He could probably handle both.

It's the Balfour signing.

For those still speculating, #Rays big announcement IS the Balfour signing. No Price or Myers extension, no stadium deal.

The Red Sox signed Grady Sizemore to a one-year major league deal worth $750K. With incentives, that can grow to $6M.

It's hard to see this working out but a team like Boston can afford the risk better than most.
Love this signing for Boston, probably won't work out but if becomes a 4th or 5th outfielder than it is a great move.

How would you guys rank the 4 free agent pitchers (ignoring whatever contract they will be getting)?

Id say

Santana

garza

arroyo

jiminez

Santana allows way too many homers so if he lands in a very pitcher friendly park, he might be the best of the group. Otherwise I think a case can be made for any of them and Garza has a 4/$52m in hand.

Best stuff: Ubaldo and it's not close

Most likely not to implode: Arroyo

Most consistent: Garza

Most likely to not get hurt: Santana

Ubaldo is the biggest risk/reward, the other three are innings eaters are solid middle of the rotation guys. Arroyo a bit underrated IMO, guy pitched for a long time in a very hitter-friendly park and put up some solid numbers.

The Giants bought LHP David Huff from the Yankees. He had been DFAed after the Tanaka signing.

Maybe AT&T will help his problems with the long ball.

The Garza deal with the Brewers is finally done. 4/50 that could be 5/67 with a vesting option and bonuses
