Wheaton scouting report from WalterFootball.com:

Strengths:

  • Extremely fast
  • Stretches the field vertically
  • Threat to score on any reception
  • Great quickness to get separation
  • Excellent run-after-the-catch ability
  • Good route runner
  • Reliable hands
  • Productive
  • Plays with swagger
  • Perfect fit as a slot receiver
  • Sudden in and out of his breaks
Weaknesses:
  • Short
  • Light
  • Blocking
  • Can he play outside in the NFL?
  • Can he beat jams
Summary: Wheaton has been one of the best and most consistent receivers in the Pac-12 over the past three seasons. The speedster has been a big-play threat and has provided Oregon State with some big games.

As a sophomore in 2010, Wheaton saw his first significant playing time. He caught 55 passes for 675 yards and four touchdowns. He then improved his production with 73 receptions for 986 yards and a touchdown in 2011. Last year, Wheaton had an excellent senior season with 91 receptions for 1,244 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was a huge part of Oregon State's offense with his ability to move the chains and provide big catches downfield.

Wheaton continued to impress NFL talent evaluators at the Senior Bowl. Wheaton had a good week and was one of the better skill-position players. He gave cornerbacks a lot of issues with his speed. Between his quickness and route-running, Wheaton was consistently getting separation from defensive backs. The only corner that consistently covered Wheaton was Washington's Desmond Trufant. During their regular-season matchup, Trufant held Wheaton to 25 yards on two receptions. All the other cornerbacks had their hands full with Wheaton.

At the Combine, Wheaton had a fast 40 time (4.45), as expected. He also did well in the field receiving drills.

Wheaton looks like an instant NFL contributor as a slot receiver. He doesn't look like a future No. 1 wideout, but could be a very good second or third receiver. While working mostly out of the slot, he also should be able to line up outside some as an X (split end) receiver.

Wheaton looks like a receiver that can stretch the field vertically and potentially make some impact plays. With a good running game or No. 1 receiver on the other side, Wheaton could be a deadly big-play threat.

Offenses that are looking for a speed receiver to stretch the field and a slot receiver to move the chains in the short to intermediate part of the field will be interested in Wheaton. He could be a nice value pick in the second or third round.

Player Comparison: Mike Wallace. In terms of style of play, Wheaton is reminiscent of Wallace. Wheaton may not turn out to be as good as Wallace has been in the NFL, but Wheaton has that potential. Wallace was a steal at the end of the third round in the 2009 NFL Draft. Wheaton could go as high as late in the second round but shouldn't fall out of the third round. His game is very comparable to Wallace's. In the NFL, he could be a similar-style receiver but may not be as productive as Wallace has been. Wheaton could be a poor man's Mike Wallace as a pro.

NFL Matches: Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Minnesota, Houston, New England, St. Louis, Baltimore There are many teams that could target Wheaton on the second day of the draft. Pittsburgh is a natural fit for Wheaton as it needs to replace Wallace. He could be a target for them in the second round.

The Chiefs also want to add a receiver. Wheaton could be a perfect complement to Dwayne Bowe and Jonathan Baldwin. Kansas City is without their second-round pick, so it would have to take Wheaton in the third round unless it trades Branden Albert.

St. Louis has a big need at wide receiver. Wheaton would make sense for the Rams.

Detroit wants a receiver to complement Calvin Johnson. Wheaton fits the mold of Ryan Broyles and Titus Young, two recent draft picks by general manager Martin Mayhew. The Lions could consider Wheaton in the second or third round.

Minnesota needs more receivers to work with Christian Ponder. If the Vikings target another position in the first round, Wheaton would be a good value in the second round.

The Texans need a downfield threat for their offense. Wheaton could be a good fit for them on the second day.

If the Rams pass on a wide receiver in the first round they would definitely be in play for Wheaton on day two.

New England badly needs receiver help and Wheaton is a good fit in their offense. The Patriots have shown a lot of interest in Wheaton, and he could be their second-round pick.

The Ravens could use another receiver, and Wheaton would be an interesting fit in Baltimore's offense. He could take advantage of Joe Flacco and give the Ravens another deep threat to pair with Torrey Smith.

I like Wheaton but would've loved Keenan Allen but I trust the Steelers recent track record on WRs

There he’ll show off his physical traits and potential, which head coach Oregon State head coach Mike Riley thinks his star receiver has plenty of: "we're just looking at a glimpse of what he's capable of."

A little more on the selection of Bell over Lacy:

Le'Veon Bell heads to Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 48By Chris Wesseling

Around the League Writer

The Pittsburgh Steelers had a chance to draft a physical running back compared to Jerome Bettis and Barry Foster, and opted to pass.

Instead of pulling the trigger on Alabama's tackle-breaking battering ram Eddie Lacy, the Steelers opted for the more well-rounded Le'Veon Bell of Michigan State with the No. 48 overall pick of the 2013 NFL Draft.

A bigger back in his own right at 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds, Bell is more of a finesse runner with agility and passing-game skills.

Although Bell's short-area burst and elusiveness have drawn concerns from scouts, NFL.com's Bucky Brooks rated him as the best back in the draft, after Bell racked up 1,793 yards and 12 touchdowns for Michigan State as a junior in 2012.

If Brooks' instincts are correct, the Steelers will end up with a Steven Jackson clone after passing on a back who has a chance at being the next Bettis.

more on Bell

Bell said that he comes from a family of Steelers fans and that his mother predicted he'd be chosen by Pittsburgh.

"My heart dropped when I got the call," Bell said. "I'm so excited to get there and get ready to get to work. This is the happiest day of my life. No words can describe it."

Loooove Wheaton. Was stumping for he or Hunter in two if they went O. He isn't a slot guy in my mind. Guy is probably one of the best, if not the best, deep ball guy in this class. At least as of today. Other guys might have more potential in that area, but that's all it is right now....Wheaton has already shown he can go get the ball and beat press coverage.

Bell? Meh. I don't totally hate the player, but I do hate that they took him in the 2nd. Don't see the need given the types of RBs available this year. For as big as Bell is he doesn't run with much power. That bugs me. As to the comparisons to Dwyer/Redman...ehhhh, not really. Bell's got better feet than either of those guys and can actually catch a pass. Should've taken Brown though.

Fair point about Bell. He is a big guy who does well in the passing game, but seems to me to be a tad sluggish building up speed, and loses too much when changing direction. Better jukes than Redman but nowhere near as tough. Similar to Dwyer, but Dwyer seems to like contact. Bell has decent speed for a big guy, but goes down too easy for his size also. Although, I will admit that I felt much the same way about Matt Forte in '08. Just really bummed that they passed on Lacy for him, or didn't try to get him a round later.

I didn't really want Lacy either, he's overhyped, but i can understand that. I certainly would've like Bell better as a 3rd, but then I'd have been happy with Wheaton in 2.

Trying to convince myself it balances out....but I'd rather be sitting here with Jones/Brown/Wheaton and then having to address RB tomorrow, if I'm being honest.

I wanted Lacy. Or else I wanted the Steelers to take a chance later on on Marcus Lattimore. Oh well. I really hope I'm wrong about Bell.

Always liked Wheaton- I saw a lot of him in the Pac12. Very fast. Good hands.

The Jarvis Jones pick is really growing on me.

Predraft, listening to Colbert (and Tomlin) they stated they thought there was about 6 special players and then about 15 really good players.

They were positive they would get something that was good that they wanted (not a QB or something they had) by just staying at #17.

Then yesterday after the draft, they admit that heading into the combine they didn't even talk to Jarvis Jones because they knew he wouldn't be obtainable.

But the minute he went and timed a slow 40, they thought that might change things and Colbert said first thing he did was go track down Jones' agent and started making in-roads.

Low and behold, as Colbert stated "Jones was definitely one of those guys I talked about being a 'special player' in this draft."

When they watched the live workouts he was "off the charts impressive". And that "he carried himself like a veteran player, with a mature demeanor."

Thomas, S, in the 4th would be good. Still want a CB though.
Which one?

Thomas, Phillip

Thomas, Shamarko

Who do you want your favorite team to draft?
>I hope Phillip Thomas slides to the Steelers in round 4.
;)

Though I would take Shamarko for sure also. 2 totally different types of safeties. A true instinctive ballhawk or a speedy/athletic safety with lots of pop.
Yes?

either really with a slight edge to shamarko

Haven't read the last several pages - how are my yinzer friends feeling about the 1st 3 rounds?

I may be biased, but I think the entire AFCN is kicking ### in this draft.

Cautiously optimistic. I don't think many people are upset with Jones or Wheaton. Bell, you're getting a mixed review around here.

I dont think we are getting mixed reviews about Bell.... just that we/everyone had a hard-on for Lacy since January and all the talk of him being the top RB.

Won't shock me to see them grab a QB, no.

I'm on board with them going after two Safeties, truth be told. Grab one of the Thomases in 4 and target another S in 6. They need youth there in a bad, bad way and there are still a lot of nice looking prospects available.

S, S, ILB, CB, BPA for scheme, BPA for scheme with the last 6 picks, in whatever order, wouldn't make me unhappy at all.

Anyone else hearing the "Steelers are trying to trade Dwyer" blurb on nfl network? :confetti:

Unfortunately, I'd be shocked if they'd be able to even get a 7 for him. Anyone who is paying attention to the last 48 hours should be able to deduce he's late for his meeting with The Turk.

Shamarko it is.

1, 3 and 4 are making me care less and less about 2. They've been setting them up and knocking them down this draft so far.

Uhh....well, that took away some of my shine.

Not a huge fan. Would've preferred to wait on QB for a round.

Love that they traded up and got Shamarko. I figured they traded their 4th rounder, but no.

At first and still, not real happy about the Landry pick. Not surprised we took a QB, but with Greene, Jesse Williams, Philip Thomas, and others still on the board, I dont think QB was the right choice. If Landry becomes Ben's successor, I'll change my tune, but I think the could have got him or Bray, Dysert in the 5th.

Pittsburgh gave their 2014 3rd round pick to Cleveland for their 4th round pick (111 overall) to draft Shamarko Thomas
Hmm....at first blush I think I'm cool with it. Wish it had been some other team, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
They should get 2 3rd round comp picks next year so makes sense to make the trade.

Loving the Shamarko pick. As is Carnell. He REALLY likes him.
