*2014-15 Hot Stove Thread: The Padres won it I guess (1 Viewer)

Cabrera is horrible.
Better than you are
BARELY.

I think they gotta trade out Zobrist with a year left, it'll be interesting to see what they get.

Maurer for Smith seems like a pretty even swap
Droobs has hit around .240 for last two years so around 1 WAR BUT he hit 270ish for at least four years prior and still has a little pop

I do agree that they are likely trading Zobrist - last year of his contract and getting to expensive for Tampa - besides they can get more for him than for Yunel Escobar

Seattle needs the hitter - he should be LH part of RF platoon with Ruggiano and

San Diego gets several (not sure if 4 or 5) years of Brandon Mauer who pitched well when moved to the bullpen last year but I would wager that Padres will move him back to starter, probably at AAA

I'd like this job. Twins probably have zero guys like this:

The Angels employ a young quartet of analysts in their baseball operations department, and the four young executives took some time to talk about the work they do with the Orange County Register’s Pedro Moura. Jeremy Zoll, Jonathan Strangio, Nate Horowitz and Mike LaCassa (whose ages range from 24 to 28) discuss their efforts, which include seeing if trends translate from college to minor league ball and grouping players by swing path and testing splits for trends. Manager Mike Scioscia spoke with Moura as well regarding the team’s increased usage of information: “As we’ve organized and analyzed numbers better, it’s helped us, primarily on the defensive front. It’s also helped with some lineup issues or determinations. I think our decisiveness was noticeable last year.” GM Jerry Dipoto said that each of Zoll, Strangio, Horowitz and LaCassa is future GM material and offered high praise for his young lieutenants.

Those guys probably work 90 hours a week for under 30k.

Yes, but work includes watching a lot of baseball. 30k could be an issue though...but I doubt that's the number.

yeah statistical analysts grow on trees. They can definitely pay them a pittance.

Marlon Byrd to the Reds for ml starting pitcher Ben Lively

Byrd will certainly be better in LF in Cincinnati that what they have/had but after trading away Latos and Simon I doubt this club is contending. Maybe there are hoping for a miralce start out of the gate and if not trade Cueto and other parts for a major rebuild

Supply is alot higher than demand.

Lively's had a good run so far in the minors, and in Law's write-up he cast doubt on Lively's future because he's more of a "deception" guy than a "stuff" guy...but, doesn't deception count at the MLB level, too? If you can't see it, you can't see it.

ask Tony Cingrani about that.
Yeah, I don't know. Cingrani had a myriad of injuries last year, I'm not saying that pitchers didn't figure out his delivery, I just don't know. He also leans on his FB heavily, maybe hitters are figuring that out?

Kershaw's a deceptive guy, hitters really haven't gotten any further in figuring him out, no?

yeah it usually takes around 163 games

Giants are pursuing a trade for Zobrist, I guess? Could be a decent rental for them. They're certainly in a position where he could be the difference in making the postseason.

Giants are loaded with arms, yes?
Bumgarner, Cain, Hudson and Peavy are locked in as starters next year, and their front office has said that Lincecum's going to get another shot at the rotation, which I guess they have to give him to justify his contract. Given Sabean's predisposition to his own guys, it's easy to see Vogelsong back on a cheap deal as well, although certainly a starting spot looks tenuous.

Petit is their long relief guy, although I've been of the opinion this year that he's their second-best starter, it just doesn't seem that SF shares that opinion. They traded a couple of pretty good arms in Escobar and Hembree for Peavy, and their #1 prospect Kyle Crick has pretty scary walk rates...I don't think they have anyone that's close to being able to help out the big club. But something centered around Zobrist for Petit would certainly make some sense on both sides.

Huh, thought their farm was still deep. Maybe it was more that they are short on bats and their arms are just the best of the worst.

Dot connecting with Petit certainly makes sense though.

I would think Rays would want hitting in return, no? They have a very good staff.

In the big picture, yes, but if San Fran is offering the best players a team like theRays needs to take that deal then pursue bats.

I've seen some speculation that the Rays might want Susac. They do have a catcher fetish and maybe Rene Rivera isn't enough. The Giants like having a good backup but maybe they could find one in free agency.

Zobrist will be 34 in May and has one year remaining on his contract. Sabean and Bochy love veterans but not that much.

Deadline deals are different
Should they be? They (along with what seems like the majority of MLB) could possibly a) make the playoffs but b) still use some help. If they've cratered by mid-season, they can either flip him back to someone else for a prospect, or hang on to him and collect a pick.

There's certainly some merit to never trading prospects for rentals too, but if you're going to do it, pre-season seems like the better time.

Aside from the obvious benefit of a full season vs. two months, the current CBA's compensation rules should favor off-season deals. Zobrist isn't a qualifying offer type of guy anyway.

I'm not as high on Susac as some others. He'll be 25 on opening day and his MLB stats were helped by an unsustainable BABIP. His OPS projects about 100 points lower than his initial MLB line. But he's good enough to back up Posey which is what they need.

Fire Sabean imo.

Rays have had "discussions" with Colby Rasmus, apparently in an effort to add as many awful players as possible and secure the worst offseason ever title.

I don't know? The Rays aren't nearly as bad as some people are making them out to be, and they could use another outfielder. The pitching staff is deep and legit. Adding a few bats with some thump on short deals isn't such a bad idea.
