2015 NBA Thread: I felt a great disturbance in the trolls, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. (2 Viewers)

3-4 what?  Realistic chances at the title as top dawg before his skills diminish to the point where he's a 2nd/3rd option?

Just saying his skill set will hold up for a long time counter to someone saying "omg he's 32, this is his last chance".
Idk if it will dude. Even with the lost weight, he's still a massive man. He's a dude who's game relies on explosiveness and he's already been dealing with bad knees for years now. I think he'll drop off quicker than most think.

So what are the odds on Lebron opting out and leaving Cleveland totally screwed for a 2nd time at this point?

Why so many blowouts this playoff?  Seems like every game I turn on someone is down by 20 and I just never turn back.

Lebron/KD/??? to Philly.   Figure they have enough cap room to sign both, and enough assets for Lebron to piss away on a 3rd wheel that doesn't fit right?

Simmons/Noel/Okafor/Embiid and 27 2nd rounders for Westbrook.    KD and Lebron sign.   No way that doesn't work, right?

Someone mentioned this to me over the weekend.  I have no idea how this year actually compares to other years, so this is all just fodder and speculation, but I do wonder if the new analytically-oriented philosophies for offensive efficiency are much more prone to these wild swings, in that they are trying to leverage the inefficiency.  So when you do that really well, you can have huge gains.  But when it doesn't work, you keep trying the same thing and can really fail.  If you are trying to shoot 40 3s per game, you are going to kill it if you make 25, but be terrible if you make 5.

No way do the Warriors lose, unless Cleveland makes some drastic changes in which case maybe they win it.

/hot take

Really impressed with the GSW defense. The Cavs weren't getting those open 3's, and they were able to handle Lebron for the most part 1 on 1 (with Iggy). Just shows you how good OKC's offense is. Sadly, I don't see Lue making the adjustments to make this a series. I don't care who wins, just want a good series.

Oh, and Kevin Love is so soft. He is basically a 3 pt shooter at this point.
It will be really interesting to see the adjustments Lue makes for game 2.  He simply hasn't been that tested as a coach yet against a team as good as GS.  He really didn't wow me with any changes in game 1.  Overall, they looked really bad on both ends of the floor.

Yeah, the idea that Lue is an upgrade from Blatt has yet to be supported with results. Blatt had a better regular season record and got a lesser roster to the Finals.

2-7 in NBA finals would be one hell of a legacy.
It will be interesting to see how much people hold this against him considering that his teams have generally been the underdog in those finals, and that he's played pretty well in most of them too.

LeBron has faced the Spurs three times, Warriors two times, Thunder, and Mavericks.  The only team where James may have had a better supporting cast than his opponent were the Thunder.  That squad was easily the worst Western team to make the finals in the last decade.  Sometimes undeserving teams are able to advance.  The Mavericks were actually quite deep that year they won and the Spurs and Warriors need no further explanation.

His finals record should absolutely not be held against him.  He was incredible last year against the Warriors by himself especially considering the Cavs had no one else the Warriors really needed to focus on defensively.  When you accumulate the stats James did last year KNOWING that's where the ball is going, that is pretty damn amazing.

You put him on a team like the Spurs with all those supporting players and Pop as the coach and he easily has 4+ rings.

Agreed.  I think the biggest thing to hold against him, if you were going to do so, is the loss to the Mavs. They were up 2 games and despite the depth of Dallas, Miami was sporting three HOF players in their prime.  No excuse for losing that.  Otherwise, I think history will show that the better team won in each of the seasons Lebron made the finals.

Every tournament is better, every one.  Baseball, NCAA tourney, Stanley Cup Playoffs, World Cup, Olympic hockey, ####### everything is better.  EVERYTHING.

Cavs vs Spurs or Warriors, everyone knew it coming into the playoffs and that's how it's gonna be.  Same as it was with Jordan, with Shaq/Kobe, 80s Celtics, 80s Lakers, and the taking my talents to south beach heat.  Only the Spurs and Pistons have kept it interesting.
NBA scores biggest NBA Finals Game 1 rating since 2001

Thursday night’s Warriors-Cavaliers Game 1 drew a 13.1 overnight rating for ABC

Meanwhile ...

Stanley Cup Finals: TV ratings are ugly, but whatever

Lo and behold, the numbers are in for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, and they are ... not great.

Overall, it got a 2.8 overnight rating. That's down from a 4.2 for last year,'s Game 1, which was fueled by the Chicago market, and the worst since the 2.4 Kings-Devils got in 2012. For context, CBS ran a rerun of something called "Scorpion," which your aunt probably watches, and it got a 2.6. "The Bachelorette" pulled in a 4.4.
But wait, there's more!  Game 1 (airing on major broadcast network NBC) overlapped with Game 7 of the WCF (airing on TNT):

-On TNT, Golden State and Oklahoma City were pulling in an 11.2, the NBA's highest-ever cable overnight.

-Most of all, in the Bay Area, Thunder-Warriors curbstomped Sharks-Penguins:

Overnights in the San Francisco market: a source says the OKC-Golden State was around a 30.9; Sharks-Pens came in at around a 5.3.

I pretty much agree with this, but would also add losing to the Spurs in 5 games the way they did was bad. No shame in losing to the Spurs, but you can't take that kind of beating. On the other side he deserves extra points for taking the 07 or 08 Cavs to the finals, and winning 2 games in last year's finals.

Did you watch him vs the Mavs in '11?  Not good.

Not only was he bad, but he lost to Dirk, 40 year old J. Kidd, Brian Cardinal, Jose Berrea, and a bunch of NBA d leaguers.

Just because the ratings are higher doesn't mean the product is better (case in point the ratings you showed for the Bachelorette).

NHL playoffs/finals are much better than NBA however Joe Blow watcher of playoff sports will probably watch the NBA because it is easier to understand.

Yes I agree his 18/7/7 on 48% shooting was much lower than what we usually see from him.

I live in Silicon Valley.  I was at an end-of-year event at my daughter's school the night of SCF Game 2 (game was well into the 1st period).  The MC asked the crowd, "Any Sharks fans here?" and got some tepid applause.  Then the MC asked, "Any Warriors fans here?" and the place erupted.  Par for the course.

My guess is a lot of that has to do with the fact the Warriors are the defending champs and just set an NBA record for most wins in a season so they are chock full of new fans while the Sharks have never made the SC Finals before and weren't expected to do much going into the playoffs.

There are a lot of dynamics at play.  What you said for sure is part of it.  Another part of it is basketball has wider international appeal, particularly in Mexico and the Pacific Rim.  Considering such a huge population of the Bay Area comes from those regions, they will be much faster to gravitate to the Warriors rather than any hockey team.

Perhaps. I will readily admit that I find it difficult to understand the appeal of a product that puts the league's 11th best team in its showcase event.

The league did not do that.....the team played well enough to get to the finals.  Just because the wild card team makes it to the Super Bowl doesn't mean the product is bad.  Parity rules these days in most sports.

That's not true. Every other sport has a format that either heavily favors the superior teams (NBA), makes it difficult enough to reach the playoffs in the first place that you're virtually assured of deserving teams in the final round (MLB) or some combination both (NFL). Hockey is the worst combination of all of this- a sport where randomness rules in the short term but that also allows more than half the league to participate in the playoff format on equal footing- no wild card or play-in games like in MLB or NFL.

The result is a meaningless 6 month slog of a regular season that drives away interest because it's virtually irrelevant, tons 'o fun for a round or two, and then more often than not an unappealing matchup in the Finals.

BTW Dr. D starting this battle by bringing his NBA trashing over here, I was just having a little fun with my good friend with my post today. You seem to have gotten caught in the crossfire. Also I'm a Caps fan so I'm super bitter about this right now :bag:

Big mlb/NFL fan?

Hard to top that 83-79 Cards team winning the title a while back.

I don't know if egos will allow, but they need to experiment with bringing either Irving or Love off the bench. Their D can't afford both of them being on the court at the same time for very long. This assumes there's a legitimate defensive upgrade available at their spots.
