2016-17 NBA Thread: Finals are over, please go away (1 Viewer)

I don't think you do it unless he says he's at least willing to consider re-upping with Boston.  I'm assuming the Bird rights and playing for a team that probably makes the conference finals and could be the new power in the East if LeBron ever ages is enough to get him to think about it.
I'm with you if they think they have a legitimate chance at signing him long term.  I think in the current NBA most star players know the next team they'll be signing with already.  And I hate to say it but I don't think that's Boston for Westbrook.  If they manage to sign him long term then it's a great trade.  If it's one year it's a bad move.  So I guess the question is what chance they think they have at keeping him after the year is up.

Not sure why it would be very likely a 1 year rental when the Celtics would be able to offer him the most money as a FA but it is certainly a risk.  There was an article out yesterday spectulating a deal of Westbrook for Johnson, Smart, Rozier, Young, 2018 Brooklyn pick & 2019 Memphis pick could get things done.  That would leave the Celtics with next year's Brooklyn pick, more money to offer Westbrook when he is a FA and a year to convince him that Boston is a strong contender for years to come.  You are rolling the dice but I would pull the trigger.
There were points in the Celtics/Hawks series that Smart was the best player on the floor.  I think 2-3 years from now he is going to be a legit top 25 player.  If I had the choice of giving up Smart or Thomas I'd give up Thomas in a second.

Radio talk is a deal for Griffin could be on the horizon...quoting a report from Devaney of Sporting News (when was the last time Sporting News was relevant?)...not sure what other parts would be involved...regardless of what happens it does appear the Celtics are trying to make something happen...if they can make a move and still keep two pieces between Brown and the two Brooklyn picks I would be pretty pleased...

Hoping for something like Smart + Crowder + '17 pick for Russ, but we'll see. I'm guessing it'll probably be Thomas plus the pick if this actually happens - which still isn't a bad haul at all for someone with one foot out the door.

ETA: Also seen some speculation about Brown + Pick, but I think that's just some OKC fantasies.  :towelwave:

As a Raptors fan, I hope they go this route :hifive:

Really hoping the Griffin rumors is just Ainge leaking it out there as leverage in negotiating with OKC.

I don't understand the Blake Griffin thing.  They already have Al Horford, who plays better as a 4 than a 5 IMO.  I think if they want to improve their front court, a guy like Demarcus Cousins would fit their team better.

Absolutely. No risk, no reward. How many passive GMs have been successful in this era of the NBA?
Cleveland/Boston.  Those are the only teams that won championships in the last 10 years without drafting an MVP caliber player (and Cleveland is a weird situation).  Assuming you think Wade is an MVP caliber guy.

When the Big 3 formed in 2009/2010, none of them actually played together much and so you had a steeper learning curve.

The Golden State Warriors already have a title and were up 3-1 on the cusp of winning their 2nd so adding Durant into the mix I think will be a much smoother transition. I believe they will not stumble at all out of the gate. I wouldn't be shocked if they start fast and then ease up and make sure they are fresh for the playoffs.

66-16 (16-4) playoff run with a nice trophy at the end.

probably bull####, but fun either way

That's interesting. If it goes down that way they could still deal the 2017 Brooklyn Pick and Thomas for Westbrook. I imagine cap space would come into play at that point though. A Westbrook/Griffin/Horford team might give the Cavs a run. Don't think they'd beat GS though.

I don't really know what the does for the Clippers though, unless they're blowing it up.

Nets sign Randy Foye and Anthony Bennett. :loco:
I keep thinking that Nets pick has a chance to be 7-10 because the Nets don't have any incentive to tank and quite a few teams will.  But it's tough to look at their roster and expect them to finish outside of the bottom 5.

Is the Anthony Bennett draft the worst draft of all time?
Well at this point, you can make the argument that it wasn't a horrible draft, just that NBA scouts totally sucked.  The draft did have the Greek Freak, Gobert, Adams, Oladipo, McCollum, and a whole host of other useful bigs.

Scrolled down a bit in this dude's timeline, he's a chowdah that says he has a buddy in the Celtics org. Claims that he had first info on Horford signing, although that might just have been a good guess.

He seems like a wang.

Agreed.  If Adams or anteater go first than we aren't lamenting the awfulness of it.
Is Adams really that good? I'm not sure I understand the love. When one of the Plumlee brothers has the 2nd most win shares, you know its a terrible draft.

Is Steven Adams that highly regarded?  He was all of 8 and 6.7 last year.  Is this your new Omar Asik?
Great defender/rebounder, and he didn't get as many mins last year as he will this year. I went through depth charts for every NBA team and looked at everybody's starting C's. Here's who I'd rank above Adams (ETA in no particular order):

Cousins

Gobert

TOWNS

M. Gasol (assuming healthy)

Jokic

Drummond

Mozgov (haha jk lol)

Horford

Jordan

A couple others are close. But that puts him pretty comfortably in the Top 10.

Lopez

Whiteside

Vucevic

Kanter

Doesn't crack top 15. Nice role player. Great fit if you have a quality 4.

I think calling him a great rebounder is a bit of a stretch. Of the 60 centers to play 500 minutes last year, his rebound rate was 43rd, and that wasn't really a one year aberration. I would say hes a passable rebounder, a good defender in the Anderson Varejao kind of way, and mediocre offensive player who can catch and finish well. He's only 23 (in 6 days) so he is going to get better, but he looks more like a future average to slightly above average starting center than franchise cornerstone.

Per Woj,  Spurs initially only offered Ginobli $3m, but had to increase the offer to $14m due to a large offer of around 2/$30m from Philly.  Probably cost them Boban in the process.

Well they've been getting below-market deals for forever so #### them. Good for philly.

Trading two elite lottery talents for a guy who is going to be a FÃ in 11 months is a HORRIBLE idea.  The allure of Westbrook is adding him to a team with other talent already in place.  What good does it do to trade all the talent for 1 guy?
You'll have to ask the Knicks how that went.

That was a first rd pick in this years draft and 2 2nd rounders.  While the deal was horrible it wasn't 2 elite lotto talents for 11 month rental
That pick ended up in Orlando, who drafted Dario Saric. Then promptly traded him to Philly.

So the regret begins this year.

I know it's unseemly to ##### but they do need a second unit that's not 37+.

Varejao does have spunk I'll give him that. Skunky-### smellin' spunk.
He's a warm body for practices and a mop up man. Heaven help them if he's playing significant minutes in crucial games.
