I'm with you if they think they have a legitimate chance at signing him long term. I think in the current NBA most star players know the next team they'll be signing with already. And I hate to say it but I don't think that's Boston for Westbrook. If they manage to sign him long term then it's a great trade. If it's one year it's a bad move. So I guess the question is what chance they think they have at keeping him after the year is up.I don't think you do it unless he says he's at least willing to consider re-upping with Boston. I'm assuming the Bird rights and playing for a team that probably makes the conference finals and could be the new power in the East if LeBron ever ages is enough to get him to think about it.
