2016 ACC Basketball (closed - see 2017 thread) (1 Viewer)

Well done, ACC. As a life-long ACC watcher, the only way this could be better would be if they had four of the final eight and none of them were UNC or Duke( me conveniently forgetting that two of those remaining are carpetbaggers). I'm a UVA fan from here until April 4th - had family go there and it's the closest school to my home. Man, oh man, did the Hoos look good last night.

Oregon did some flexing last night but I think it was celebratory rather than taunting. Brooks making a 30 footer to beat the shot clock with 5 to go was kinda emblematic of the night

I don't think what K said was a big deal, but some people will make it a big deal, especially Duke haters.

Doesn't this mean Ga Tech will be paying both Hewitt and Gregory now? I assume they will be limited in what they can pay their new coach based on having to pay the two former coaches. I still think they made the right decision in letting Gregory go.

I'm not positive but I think Hewitt is finally off the books after this year

I just assume they are paying Hewitt until he dies.  Whoever gave him that contract should be in jail.  But yeah, we probably will go cheap but it's by choice not necessity IMO.  I'm guessing we will end up with one of these mid-major coaches but whoever it is needs to focus on recruiting.  There's no reason a decent coach can't get good players to Atlanta.

 
ACC on track to shatter record for money earned in NCAA tournament

Through Friday night, ACC teams have earned 23 units, counting their Elite Eight games. They will earn another two from the Final Four, putting the total at 25 units. That's where the conference will finish, because no units are awarded for the title game. The previous record for the most units earned in a single NCAA tournament was 24 by the Big East in 2009.

The 25 units are worth at least $39.9 million. The ACC guaranteed itself at least $32.8 million from the 21 units it brought home in last year's tournament.

I don't really get why it is a big deal to start with. Coach K is an old coach. Whether or not one agrees with him, it isn't surprising an old coach would not like what Dillon did and would say something to him about it.

But why did Coach K lie about it? That seems rather bizarre. If you are Coach K, you can essentially do whatever you want. Why worry about what others think over something as trivial as this? It actually gets more attention because he lied about it that it would have otherwise. Now he has had to come out with a statement of apology, though it was careful to say he "responded incorrectly" rather than calling it a lie.

Well there is the part where the same coach lecturing Dillon Brooks about his on court behavior has no problem letting his own players do much worse.  Not just talking about the numerous Grayson Allen tripping incidents either.  Coach Kleadership is a hypocrite.

McCallum missed the Georgia Southern game.  Here is the ending of that game where he's got his starters in up 30 something and they are shooting in the final minute.  Kennard even takes one with :27 and the shot clock is off.

How do you know that K doesn't have a problem with his own players doing it? He is known to give them a big tongue lashing when he is mad, and I'm sure he has given them a piece of his mind in the locker room when they have done something that has pissed him off.

When it's happened in 7 of their 20 something wins, he either has no problem with it or he has no control over his team.  Which option do you think is more likely?

And why are the starters in the game in those situations if sportsmanship is so important?  Just don't be a hypocrite.

 
Pretty sure it was more about the show boating (he turned toward the general direction of the duke bench and made a very exaggerated saluting motion) than the shot. I can't imagine anyone cares about the shot. Hoisting up a 30 footer (that happened to go in) is better than taking a shot clock violation and making the other team inbound the ball.

Yea, I'm not sure why people keep making it about the shot.  Trying to move the goal posts to fit their argument, I assume.

It's about the gloating and then trying to clown Grayson with the BS hug at the end.

Whatever spin you want to put on it is fine.  The coach shouldn't be lecturing anyone on behavior though.  What's worse?  A salute after hitting a three pointer in a Sweet 16 game or a player tripping an opponent multiple times this year without punishment?  Coach K's public comments about the tripping have all been supportive of Allen so he damn sure shouldn't be bent out of shape about someone saluting a big shot.

ACC fans like yourself should be rooting for UVA and UNC-- makes sense to me.  They're ACC teams (understanding that for many of you Duke would be impossible/near-impossible to root for in any circumstance).  Similarly, everyone I know in Syracuse is rooting for Nova and Syracuse b/c we're loyal to our heritage too (though many have a similar exception for Gerogetown as ACC fans have for Duke).  

Tying the world closer to how most fans frame it up in the Elite 8 there are 2 ACC teams, 2 Big East, 2 Big 12, 1 P12 and one independent-- and 0 B1G/SEC.

But he's a hypocrite for giving him advice at all considering his own player's behaviors at times.  How do you think Coach K would react if random coach from another team went over and gave Grayson Allen some advice about sportsmanship?

Who cares whether it is over the shot or over the gloating. Why lie about it? Surprised K would handle this so poorly given how old/experienced he is. If he had a problem with it enough to say something to the player, he should have said it in the press conference.

Of course, I think RW's point that K essentially condoned Allen's tripping undermines any indignation he could rightfully claim about another player's showboating is spot on.

 
I just noticed on Wiki that the next two ACC Championships are being held in Brooklyn, New York...is that right?

 
Not sure why you are calling me out.  Oregon had a great season and tournament.   I'm glad some of you ACC guys that were so dismissive of Oregon getting a 1 seed saw how deserving they were.   When a few of you admitted you never saw Oregon play this year it all made sense.

The Big East could tie the record they set in 1985 with 3 schools in the Final Four again.  Oh wait...., we're calling these teams "ACC" schools now?  Oh, right.  Got it.  Of course Notre Dame was never a Big East school either.

In my case, you're wrong. I'm pretty old and my hatred for UNC runs deeper than it does for Duke. Duke sucked when I was a kid. The Big 3 were UNC/NCSU/Maryland back then, with UVA and Wake occasionally shaking things up. Dean Smith coached the pants off of the team I root for while K was still ####### around at Army.

I can't root for UNC - ever. If ISIS had a team, I'd pull for them over the Heels. When Carolina plays Duke, the best I can hope for is me going blind and deaf. And maybe a tactical nuke strike on the gym.

I have family ties to UVA, even if they have the most pretentious fans in the ACC this side of UNC, and they've never won anything.

Correct, they are ACC schools because they are in the ACC.

Yes, we call them ACC schools, because, you know, they are in the ACC. Many of us don't like it but have been forced to accept it. Maybe you should, too.

Funny...watch ESPN and its like Syracuse has been in the ACC for decades.

But listen to talk radio and people actually care enough to call to say how they were emotionally invested in Villanove last night and openly root against "their" new conference.

Sorry, it's the general public.  My friends in Maryland (where I lived a long while) love the ACC and despise the B1G-- the ACC is in their blood and they'll never out-grow it or get used to it.

There are plenty of exceptions of people who actually like the moves of their new school.  Of course, all my friends who currently live in NC come to mind and MD fans in Chicago, for example-- but it's not just geography.  But there's a critical mass of people who will never accept it.

Cant blame them.

Anyway, go Syracuse...
