2016 Open Championship: Swede escapes (1 Viewer)

If they keep this up it will be the best two man race since tiger/may in early 2000's

Not sure how either could play much better

I wouldn't call him a grinder. He won the European money title, the pga money title, and the tour championship in one year, only man to ever do that.
More of his style. Ball striker, sand saver, not a bomber, keeps the driver in the bag a lot of the time.  In the age of DJ, Day, Rory and the rest of the ridiculously long hitters, he's a bit unique.

Best final round pairing I can recall.  On pace to shoot 64/65 from last group in a major -- the best two rounds of the day.  May and Woods shot 66/67 to put it in perspective.

One of the better rounds of golf I have ever seen played, under the circumstances  Good win for Stenson.

What a final round and the back and forth early and just all around really good play.

Good to see it not be someone blowing up to "hand" the winner the trophy.  Totally earned it all day long.  Just fantastic watching it (and then seeing how far back everyone else just was).

Awesome Sunday of golf.

We debated here last year who the Best to Not Win a Major was now...mostly between DJ, Stenson, and Serge.

serge is the last man standing.   but   he'll never win one because he doesn't care.    Saw an interview with him, and he basically said so.

However, that same interview made me think a lot more highly of him.   He's a very genuine and giving person.

I think I've seen this henrik stenson movie before.

In prime shape to be in the final group of a major only to fall off the pace on the last 9 and have to look on as a champion is crowned.
Nailed it!

Seriously though, congrats to Stenson and that back 9 was awesome

Best careers not to win... Garcia and Stricker

Best players not to win... maybe Fowler and Reed?
Garcia is still only in his 30's...and he's better than Reed...just slightly behind Fowler in the WGR.  I think he's a lock for current, and maybe only behind Westwood for career.

I fully agree.  Stricker is #9 on the all-time money list.  Awesome day for him, as the exemptions he'll receive will do "Mr. September" well.  I don't see Strick or Garcia ever winning.  Fowler and Reed will have a rough go, only bc there is so much young talent mixed in with veterans currently on tour.

Great performances by Henrick and Phil the entire tournament.  Phil didn't have his accuracy off the tee on Saturday but is a great scrambler to save par.  I thought if he shot 66, he'd win yesterday.  He shot 65 and lost by 3.  That's how great Stenson played.  Fun to watch.

I'd like to see Garcia win a major, and hope it is a British open.  I'd also like to see Westwood win a British open.  I don't care if Ian Poulter ever wins a major.

Forgot about Westwood.  Definitely in the mix on first list.

Who's the GOAT not to win a major?  Montgomerie/Westwood/Garcia?
Of those three probably Monty.  Garcia is the most talented of the 3, imo.  But he doesn't seem to have the mental game needed to gruel out a major.  I believe he would have folded to Phil yesterday had it been Garcia instead of Stenson.  Always was a fan of Westwood.  He just can't seem to put together 4 complete rounds.  Never was a fan of Monty.

I don't know...might be fun to see if Poulter's eyes actually pop right out of his head on a pressure putt to win on 18.

Yeah, he is very intense.  I don't dislike him.  He just seems to play lights out during the Ryder Cup... frustrating when you're pulling against him.

It is between Westwood & Montgomerie and I would say it is basically a coin flip.  I think Garcia is a notch below those two, he certainly is in terms of overall career wins.
