If this website had a kangaroo forum would a main thread about kangaroos be in the Free For All forum or the kangaroo forum? I will hang up and listen.

agreed, and i'll really feel bad for the guys who are legit Celtics fans and not just going with the bandwagon. Checking out the Celtics reddit page (was recommended on a podcast for before and after the trade) and you can see that the fanbase is just way over the top. I think a majoirty of SIxers fans know nothing is guaranteed and they won't be any legit challenge for a championship for years (if they ever get there), but it just seems some teams have these fanbases that just get too carried away. A guy on the Celts reddit was suggesting Ainge would take much more from the Sixers in the deal (not that far off into how Sixers fans felt), and then would trade for Porzingis, Butler and sign Hayward. There may have actually been someone else thrown in there too, but i feel for guys like @Boston and other legit Celtics fans in here that get lumped in with all the rest. I guess a lot of fanbases have that though

honestly makes me want to bump the thread as much as DJackson. If the forum could cut the political threads in half or by more in here, i would be happy to utilize the basketball forum more

Funny thing is both A and B are not necessary at all. You want to keep making these posts and more disturbingly you want to keep reading the thread titles.

Wow if true.  IIRC, a lot of Lakers fans were high on Russell being a future great player/franchise cornerstone.  Wondering what their opinions are on him now?

I've never been super impressed with him to date, but I like this deal for the Nets, gotta take a chance since they can't exactly build through the draft for a while.

I wonder if Phil is one of the few people out there who still thinks Andre Drummond doesn't suck. Drummond for Porzingis could be a golden opportunity for the Pistons.

funniest thing is that it honestly seems like Magic and the Lakers felt like they were not beig discussed enough, so they forced a trade. Celtics and Sixers had all of the media stories, so Magic and the Lakers make a move to get their names back out there since Lavar wasn't doing anymore free PR for them. Lakers could be in for a great run. 

Not sure what the rational for the trade is. Centers are tricky in the NBA, it is almost like you want a top 10 one or you go none at all. Lopez doesn't seem to be in that top 10, and it seems like he will help in some regard but the other teams with a legit center will toy with him. 

ETA: of course i am talking out my ### about Lopez because he isn't a Sixer. I am guessing this puts Lakers closer to the 7th-8th pick next year, so it looks like Celtics will get the Kings pick in '19. Would much rather Lakers stink a bit more and get the 5th pick for next year

Lopez is on an expiring contract so the move clears cap space for the Lakers next summer. 

I guess they've seen enough of D'Angelo Russell.  He may be able to achieve his upside of a good player on a bad team in Brooklyn.  Mozgov is terrible but the Nets have room for his terrible contract.

 
I mean, it's the Lakers pre-supposing that they're going to need that cap room for 18/19 and 19/20. The Warriors made a cap-clearing deal immediately before they signed Durant. That's kind of what normal teams do.

Lopez can score, but he can't rebound or defend and he doesn't really fit with the timeline this team is (or should be) on, with one year left on his contract. I realize Mozgov is an albatross, but if they don't have big FA's ready to sign, they should just eat his contract until they have those guys. Really bizarre #### here. GB the NBA.

 
so what assets do the Lakers still have left? i would think not enough for an actual trade, so they better hope the Paul George talk is real. If i am George i think i would rather try for a championship rather than end up in a particular geographical location.

i would think a team like the Celtics could mess up Lakers pretty good by doing this, and also could possibly do it based on their recent trade. If Kings end up with a few good picks and another piece, you would think Celtics would push for the Lakers to make that 2-5 pick next year. Fun aspect with these trades going around

I sort of like this deal for both sides. I don't think Russell is ever going to be an above-average starter but the price of taking a flier was low from the Nets perspective. On the other hand, the Lakers got off one of the worst deals in the league without giving up a premium asset (reports are that nobody in the lottery would give up their pick for Russell).

I think highly of Russell. I think his 3-point percentage was limited this year by him working on a quick, Curry-like release. His post-up and mid-range games were highly advanced for a 21 year old. He has good passing vision. I think having Ball pass to him along with his natural progression was going to make him a 20 ppg player next season. This trade is basically what I feared from this week as a Lakers fan. Even worse, as I didn't think they would use Russell just to dump the awful Mozgov signing.

He was one of the premium assets on the team in my mind, as a Lakers fan and someone who has covered the Lakers for a newspaper in the past.

 
The Nets need talent in the worst way and given Lopez' injury history, it's probably smart business to sell sooner than later.

I liked him coming out of the draft, and I think I even made the case for him in this thread last preseason. But at this point there's nothing on his basketball reference page to suggest he's going to be special (or even good), and we're two full years in.

Count the PGs who have had better per-36s in their age 21 seasons in NBA history. Curry was still at Davidson.

 
Russell was divisive among fans at Lakers forum, but they are all pretty much universally against this trade. Nothing to like about giving up a key asset just to undo previous regime's FA mistake. Makes it so that whole year of sucking no longer had any benefit.

i can definitely see that and agree. They could have easily moved salaries at the trade deadline to teams like the Sixers or anybody without giving up a key asset. I am not sure Russell was going to be a top PG in the league, but without a doubt he was one of the top  2-3 assets on that team, and it seems like the Lakers are banking a lot on free agents. I don't know if that is a great idea considering i am not sure why free agents would want to go there. I get the whole thing of "LA as a premium destination" in the 1980s, but things have changed a bit. Other teams will have just as much salary space to offer competitive contracts, and i am not sure the Lakers have key players in place. i think out of the bottom 10 teams in the league they are certainly in the bottom 5 in terms of closest to turning this thing around

There is obviously tons of criticism about KD and the league being ruined, but his move has made the offseason 1000x more interesting to me because the bar has been set so high by GS.  Do these front offices gamble with risky short term moves with still only an unlikely chance at a ring in the next 2-3 years (like a PG rental) or go a "trust the process" long term route building youth but going bald stressing about their job security.

Pick 12 and Drummond for Porzingis. Make it happen SVG. 

I always thought SVG got a raw deal as a coach, but he sucks as a GM/President. 

 
Don't like losing Russell, but his fit next to Ball was not great. Fine offensively, but defensively it would be a train wreck. If that's the price to pay to be rid of Mozgov, so be it. Lopez upgrade should net more wins in 2017-2018 and some momentum into the summer FA bonanza. Need Ingram to make a leap this year, same as it was before the trade. 

Could still be other moves to be made too. Assets in Randle, Clarkson, Nance should be available. Could turn 27 and 28 into something.

Based what I saw in initial points the Sixers would be giving away some good assets to get Love and to help facilitate someone like George/Butler to Cavs. Sorry but IMHO those assets should be FOR THE SIXERS TO ACQUIRE A George/Butler NOT LOVE AND SO CAVS GET HIM!!!! Cavs wed themselves to Love no one should throw a life vest for them.

Depend what you view valuable. Skillset offensively? Sure but it's so dam inconsistent that asset. His poor defense and his huge contract kind of devalue him though. Plus if I'm an NBA team in the East I;m not gonna make a trade to help the Cavs out. If I'm Det, Chi, Indy, Mil I'm begging teams in the East not to help the Cavs out here and am PO'd if someone does. I highly doubt Butler goes to Cleveland unless Chicago gets a kings ransom for him. You don't trade a great player to a division rival pennies on the Dollar.

They're only going to be a train wreck defensively because of their age. I think they both have the potential to be good defensive players, but most 20-21 year olds are going to suck at D.
