If they trade for him before July 1 I'm not sure he'd have to opt in first.

News flash: Lebron James isn't enough to put them - or any team - over the Warriors.  But strange things CAN happen and if they are able to add Melo, George, Millsap, or one other high quality player then they are that much closer.

Add one of those 3 and LeBron signs for vet minimum after next year would put them over warriors.

Woj made it clear that the trade was following his official opt-in with LA so I assume there was a specific reason for doing so.

Yeah, I like this logic. They both play well with the ball in their hand but neither seems like the type to demand it at all times, and like you say this allows them to have one or the other on the floor for 48 minutes. 

Plus you gotta try something.  Harden will still only be 28 when next season starts, but if you just wait out the Warriors he'll be on the wrong side of 30 before there's even the slightest window.

Ask me again in six months if Rivers at 2/$22M (player option in year 2) is a bad contract.

I think he does enough to not be terrible at that salary but there's certainly a possibility he could collapse if given a bigger role.

 
Why would Paul want to play with Harden? What does he see in Houston that he doesn't see in San Antonio or OKC or half a dozen other teams?

 
If you are the Lakers with all this chatter about Paul George, aren't you a little bit worried? Enough to unload some actual assets to acquire him in a deal? I know the belief is George is all but guaranteed to sign there next year so why waste assets but if you are the Lakers, are you really trusting if he ends up on Boston with Hayward, Thomas, Horford that he would leave to come to a Lakers team with Ingram and Lonzo Ball? Or if he somehow ends up with Cleveland or Houston?

I know the Lakers do not want to lose any assets for a player they hope/expect to sign next year but don't they have to make a push? Use Ingram to get him, even though that may seem like way too much.

If you do not end up with George next year, the Lakers are looking at a Philly long-term project but with less talent and assets. Still a good place to be in with flexibility and young building blocks but still a long ways away.

I agree completely that looking at Harden's recent season and Paul's historical play it is a very odd match.  The first thing that comes to mind is career extension for Paul. By not being the guy playing pinball in the lane all the time he might be able to extend his career a meaningful amount of time.  Second, and I've been saying this for a while, but Houston is one of the largest urban areas in the country and has a MASSIVE TV base.  A ton of NBA players live there in the offseason which always makes me wonder why they struck out in FA during the McGrady years. No, it's not LA but it's not like Paul chose the Bucks.  But as much as I'm a Rockets homer and want this to work, I can't think of a lot of reasons why it should unless Paul wants to shoot more unguarded threes and stop getting double-teamed the moment he touches the ball.

Usually when a point guard wants to extend his career, he picks a place where he won't have to cover for his teammate's defensive liabilities every night.

 
Liggins, QUarterman....can these guys be used as the salary offset in the Paul trade as to not have to add Harrell, Witjer, etc?

 
f it i hope houston pulls this off i dont like anyone on that team and if they are going to play cobrai kai dojo than hell yeah play it to the hilt hire johnny and have him do what za za did and sweep the leg on all of the warrior starters get em a body bag and then the bucks can beat hou in the finals and send crap beard packing and then jason kidd will make mark dan tony smash out some windows in the parking lot and say man confront you on street he is enemy but then just honk his nose and that will be the most epic burn ever and will be the reason that people leave one chair empty during thanksgiving take that to the bank bromigos 

 
I cant count the number of times I have seen Chris Paul get angry when one of his teammates misses a defensive assignment. How many times do you think he is going to have to see Harden play his olé defense before he goes Artest on him?

Maybe the idea is to get someone that Harden will respect to push him to be better?  Not only do you get a great player, but a team leader that will make the rest of them better and teach Harden how to be a pro.

I don't like Houston, but think it was a good move for them.

Houston sold him a pitch about him being the first piece on the chess board. Paul liked what he heard and now get ready for the rest of the moves.

I'll take Smith's ceiling over Ntilikina's.

At age 19 and coming off a torn ACL, last season Smith played 1114 minutes, including 641 in ACC play. He led the ACC in assists and was #6 in mpg, #8 in ppg, #10 in FGP, #5 in FTA, #6 in FTM, #2 in steals, and #1 in assist percentage and points produced per game. He also recorded a record 48" vertical in draft workouts.

The Bulls got a defender (who is an even worse shooter) and a player whose game is predicated on leaping/explosiveness that has a torn ACL and is up for an extension before they can even see him play.  The draft picks are a wash.  The fact that it's even comparable is a joke considering Butler is an all-NBA two-way player with 2 freaking years left on a team-friendly deal.

 
Rumors are now that Carmelo wants to be bought out so he can join Houston. If that happens can he be signed for the min, since the  Knicks are paying his salary? If so that could be interesting if the Rockets can get Melo AND someone else.

Everything I have read is he wants to stay in NY.  NYK won't buy him out.

 
BTW, this puts LeBron, Paul, and Carmelo (can opt out) all as potential FAs next offseason with the Lakers having oodles of room especially if they get off Deng's contract.

Someone mentioned earlier that Thornwell felt like a Jerry West pick.  Beverly and Harrell (to a lesser extent) also feel the same.

He's also the VP of the player's union, and a player who is aware of his place in history and how often stars are compared (often unfairly) to their predecessors. He's not gonna doom an entire generation of NBA stars to having to hear about how LeBron sacrificed a huge percentage of his salary in his prime.

Oh I missed this fun rumor a couple days ago. It was discussed around the trade deadline.

Would like it for the Pistons. They were better with Ish Smith than with Reggie last year and Rubio is basically a rich man's Ish.

Don't see how Reggie fits in Minnesota. He's talented, but he needs to dominate the ball to be successful and will whine incessantly if he doesn't.
