Teams can’t sign a free agent if that puts them over the salary cap, even if they are willing to pay the tax. They could trade for a player and go over the cap, but there is the salary matching dance that has to go on.

Because you are trying to keep out of reach to be fouled so more time goes off the clock, obviously.

ETA: If you think you are up 1, and they instantly foul, they could still get the ball back with a shot to tie or win, depending on the free throws. That's why you try to stay out of reach from getting fouled, so you either run out the clock or there is less time for GS after the foul.

Playoff Lebron is something like 25-10 against the Cris Cries in his lifetime. If he goes to another team and continues that, Boston will have a meltdown.

The only scenario I picture George not getting a max deal is by his own choice...it would have to be a scenario where he wants to play for a specific team and is willing to sacrifice a few dollars for that chance...if it is about money he will get the max...

the point is that if you look at the available cap space for every team, there aren't that many teams that can do it.  certain teams can probably figure out the machinations to make it work, but as of now, there are only 3 teams that have the money right now.

not a guarantee anymore. the handful of teams with cap space were mostly those actively "tanking" this year. you think they will jump on a 5 year max deal to be locked in to a player like they used to? that is why teams are so middling, and i think some of the teams that have saved up cap space are not looking to burn it immediately.

you are right, that all it takes is one, and i could see the Lakers jumping on it as the consolation to losing Lebron, but outside of Lakers i am not sure who would do that

Yes...he is a star...and there are only so many of these type of players that get to the market...outside of a few teams you can not be too picky when you get the opportunity to land a player of this caliber at age 28...
