So what names could Florida go after?
It naturally starts with Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen, who was Meyer’s offensive coordinator at Florida for those two national titles. Stricklin was previously Mullen’s AD in Starkville. Mullen has shown interest in leaving in the past, but his $4.5 million salary was hard for some other schools to match. That wouldn’t be an issue for Florida, which paid McElwain around $4.4 million, according to USA Today.
“I want to be really careful, because I want to be respectful of their situation,” Stricklin said of Mullen and the Bulldogs during his Sunday night news conference. “They’ve got a good season going. I enjoyed working with Dan and I think he would probably say the same. Dan can be direct and I can be direct and sometimes we had direct conversations like you would anybody that you work with closely. He’s done a really nice job there, and as an alum of that school, I’m proud of the job he’s done at my alma mater.”
Who else? Scott Frost down the road at UCF could be a natural fit. His Knights are undefeated and making a lot of noise in the state after Frost took over a winless team two years ago.
Memphis head coach Mike Norvell is another sharp-minded offensive head coach and has kept the Tigers near the top after replacing Justin Fuente. South Florida head coach Charlie Strong has a defensive background, but he has deep ties to the state of Florida and has been a Gators assistant in four different stints. However, he also failed at his previous elite head coaching job.
It’s hard to see Fuente leaving a perfect fit like he has at Virginia Tech. Bob Stoops did not leave a top-five Oklahoma team to take over a messy Florida program — just look how happy he appears to be out of coaching. Every fan base thinks they can get Chip Kelly, but it’s always hard to predict what Kelly will do. Taggart may have fit if he didn’t go to Oregon last year.
A coach who won two division titles in two years was fired before the end of his third. You’d better find someone who does better.
