2017 New York Jets: Robby Anderson has been arrested in Florida for the second straight offseason. This is why we can't have nice things. (1 Viewer)

Turning the page after the robbery.....at the Fish this week coming off a win....should be a good test to see if the early wins were a mirage or not...I can see the Jets taking out frustration and stomping them....good test for Bowles to not have a let down after that fiasco....I hate that he didnt get upset in the least....would like to see the guy show some emotion....but if this is his thing then so be it - but it better have an upside and have them ready to play Sunday.
Miami is coming off a big comeback win that could give them some momentum. Jets will need to get up on them early. I still do not have much hope for this team to win more than six games - but at this point all we can do is hope they keep playing well and let's see what happens. Some of the teams on the schedule that looked tough early on are starting to show some warts of their own. Stranger things have happened.

They can't prove he DIDN'T regain control. Therefore the call on the field should have stood. That's how replay is supposed to work.
I'm not sure about that...

I think they need irrefutable evidence to overturn in a challenge situation.  However, every scoring play is reviewed, not as a "challenge" but, to verify the score.  In this case, they may need to prove he scored via replay.

I did not see Bowles' on field reaction because I was too busy jumping through the roof. I will have to go back and watch it. As for his press conference after the game, I guess he could have done some Ditka, Mora, Green type rant but it is obviously not his style.

I wasnt looking for a rant as I know it's not his style but damn how about a pulse....same ho hum reaction no matter even it was a crushing loss by getting screwed from refs....I dont like his emotionless style...I think Rex was too much and Bowles is complete opposite end of the spectrum...would love to have someone who shows at least some emotion when warranted....anyway - big game this week to see if they will continue to compete or if those early wins were a mirage.

Actually, a good play by McCain against McCown. He dropped off covering the inside WR and switched to the outside WR. Is it too late to trade him to the Packers?
Think it was more of a terrible pass than a good defensive play. It wasn't like McCain fooled him. He threw it right to him and nowhere near the receiver.

This is what you get with a 37 year old journeyman.

Obviously they can't bench McCown yet, but still hoping we get to see Petty and Hack at some point. The team is still playing hard and staying in games so I can't blame Bowles for sticking with McCown - but I'm thinking they're going to lose a bunch in a row now.

Well this is the Jets....even if you make your peace with a tank year and are happy with losses they find a way to suck you back in only to rip your heart out!

This is why I hated starting McCown from day 1....if Petty/Hack made that mistake you chalk it up to a young QB learning moment and it doesnt grind you....this is a 37 yr old QB with almost 2 decades of experience making that stupid rookie throw - dont get me wrong - its an awful playcall and any OC worth his salt calls a play that isnt risky but can break it like a screen/draw, etc - to throw to the outside like that is a complete breakdown in OC and QB....

As for future - schedule tightens up....I'd like to see more of the kids and less of the older guys...hopefully they can deal some off at the deadline for picks...that would make getting the 7-10th pick - which is what its looking like more and more - rather than a top 2 a little better....gotta figure Forte and Kerley would help some team for late rders.....McCown would be much better than Hundley in GB though you just dont see QBs getting traded mid season to take over a team.  Too bad as it looks like a good match.

Bowles is super conservative in every other situation - and that's when he decides to "go for it"? I can't believe they even thought there was a chance at anything other than OT.

Lost in all the McCown talk, is that Buster Skrine was about 95% of the reason the Jets lost yesterday. I'm convinced I'd have done a better job than he did yesterday. Hell, just laying his helmet and shoulder pads on the field and hoping a WR tripped on them would have been more effective. He was targeted 7 times, and gave up 7 catches for 119 yards and 3 TD's, while also getting called for 3 penalties. That was about as bad as I've ever seen a DB play, and its not like he was facing Antonio Brown.

He's been mostly pretty bad since he's been a Jet, but yesterday was pathetic.

Watching Wentz last pm shows why the Jets should have gone through and tanked this year....Eagles will be contenders for 15 yrs.  Jets will get the 10th pick and likely grab another defensive player...hoping the top teams are willing to trade out...Wentz worth everything the Eagles traded for him and more....if a deal is possible the JEts should trade the farm for a top blue chip QB

Winston, Goff, Watson and Mariotta are all looking like the right moves by their teams as well. Yes, I know we can point to guys like Carr or Dak that fell out of the first round and are legit but the odds are stacked against that.

Only the Jets could have me sit for 4 hours in a monsoon....clearly outplay a team for a long stretch then absolutely collapse in the most Jet like way possible with the Kerley bonehead fumble....Forte playing over McGuire but looking every bit his age....Some head scratching play calls...Bowles sleep inducing "Ill have to watch the tape" post game commentary.

3-5 halfway through - which would be 6-10 as I predicted if it holds us...probably the 10th pick which they'll no doubt go defense again....this team needs difference makers on offense that are just not on the roster...and experience for the kid QBs...Bowles is not going to sit McCown until they are officially eliminated from the playoffs and that is a huge mistake....praying for a few trades before the deadline...please get Forte off the team....he shouldnt be taking snaps for McGuire and now is mouthing off as to the gameplan....time to go for anything they can get.

Those wins against Cleveland, Miami and a jet-lagged Jacksonville looking real important now, huh?

I seriously can't believe anyone who understands football thought that was a good thing.

I understand the team cant just flat out tank but they would have helped their chances in a big way by playing one of the kids at QB.....winning a few meaningless games with a 37 yr old QB hurts the franchise long term vs  complete rebuild.  Problem is it seems Bowles and maybe even Mac are playing for their jobs so of course they have no interest in the greater good of the franchise....purgatory once again....

BTW - watching Watson makes me sick.....I was a fan of the Adams pick but would have been very happy with Watson.....trying to keep my sanity by saying to myself there is no way he would be as good with the Jets...Houston team is just so much better especially with offensive weapons.

Yeah watching Texans games makes me physically nauseated. I only watched yesterday because I have fuller and Graham and needed 2 big performances.

Adams has been really good for a rookie and has great potential. But even if he's the love child of Ed Reed and Ronnie Lott that's still not half as valuable as a top 10 qb. (Let alone an actual elite QB, which is where I think Watson is heading)

It's time for Josh to take a seat. Fire Bowles now if he doesn't agree to it. It just does not make any sense for the long term outlook for this franchise. This is not an indictment of McCown, as he is playing reasonably well - but the team really needs to see if Petty or Hack have a future and they can not kid themselves in thinking there's any shot at a playoff appearance.

Who are the Jets supposed to be tanking for?

When your record is 3-10 and some college dude is clearly identifiable as a near lock to become the next great NFL player, then maybe you start a bunch of backups the final three weeks. (Right now maybe only the Penn State running back is clearly identifiable as a near lock to become the next great NFL player. Certainly, none of the quarterbacks have looked that way.)

Heck, a strong case can already be made that the Jets already are "tanking." They got rid of a bunch of "name" players in the offseason. I suppose they could have forfeited all the games.

Petty got injured in preseason and Hackenberg showed nothing. How was either one of them starting in Week 1?

The theme in this thread is that Josh McCown should have never been acquired because he's too good. Ditto Jeremy Kerley and Jermaine Kearse. They Jets should have just taken the draft pick from Seattle and said, "The pick is enough. We don't want Kearse."

From Week 1 the starting lineup should have included Hackenberg (only because Petty was unhealthy in Week 1), Chad Hansen, and ArDarius Stewart. Anybody over the age of 27 should not be on the roster.

Todd Bowles should have been fired and somebody who cannot coach his way out of a paper bag should have been hired. After all, we all know a good head coach will find ways to win games even with inferior talent. Heck, the great Rich Kotite found a way to win 3 games with the talent-starved 1995 Jets. I thought you guys all consider Bowles to be hot garbage. He should be the perfect coach for tank purposes then.

You guys are wanting Bowles to purposefully lose games in order to not have to trade up to draft a top quarterback in the 2018 draft although none of you know which quarterback. You want all the young players to play but not play well (because if they play well, the team will win). You are also asking for the two younger quarterbacks to play and wanted one of them playing from the start of the season just to make sure the team even needs to draft a quarterback in the first round in 2018. Therefore, if one of them shows anything good, then we want to develop a time machine to undo the tank thinking and then restart from Week 1 with serious designs to actually win games.

****

I understand the need to find a franchise quarterback but I have not read in this thread any legitimate plans to acquire one other than this tanking talk which does not make much sense the way all of you have laid things out.

I still believe things would naturally play themselves out and if the Jets are smart in the offseason, they will get a franchise quarterback. If that involves trading multiple draft picks, then SO BE IT! The Eagles didn't tank. Neither did the Texans.

The team is not going to do that with a game in three days. If McCown plays well and the Jets lose to drop to 3-6? Well, then a transition can be made to Petty or Hackenberg but only if they are deemed to be ready to play. The Jets may have decided Petty is a career backup and Hackenberg is just not any good. If the Jets already decided that, then there isn't a reason to go to either of them aside from a token what-the-hell start very late in the season. The Jets could bring McCown back in 2018 as a mentor/early season starter before the 2018 1st round draft pick at quarterback is ready to play.

I agree it was extremely bad to win. At 0-8, Bowles probably would have been fired today and the team would have rallied around Kacy Rodgers or Karl Dorrell the rest of the way and maybe pulled off three wins in games the team will otherwise likely lose down the stretch.

Tampa Bay- I guess you could make some sort of argument that TB tanked to get Winston, but they did have a new head coach and the team was pretty rotten the year before. If someone wants to argue that they tanked, then I want to see that argument.

L.A.- did not tank to get Goff

Houston- did not tank to get Watson

Tennessee- this team was bereft of talent and had a new head coach. I believe the team was a natural 2-14 as opposed to some sort of pathetic, we-are-losing-on-purpose squad

A team that may have tanked is the 1969 Steelers. Chuck Noll knew the team wasn't good but I am not sure if Noll said to himself, "We should lose on purpose this season because I want to take that Louisiana Tech quarterback first overall."

Another team that may have tanked is the 2011 Colts. The Colts didn't try to purposefully lose in the beginning. First Kerry Collins showed he couldn't play anymore. Then Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky played and neither was any good. When a team is relying on quarterbacks #3 and #4, the results are usually never good. This team actually won 2 games in December and were actually tied with Minnesota in the wins department for a few days. When the Colts improved to 2-13, the Vikings were 2-12. It was possible the Colts could have finished 3-13 and the Vikings 2-14. The Vikings had drafted Christian Ponder in the first round earlier that year but if the Vikings landed the top pick they could have traded it to another team. One can make the argument that the wins the Colts had on 12/18 and 12/22 are evidence of a non-tanking team.

Fariq - lots of posts but I get the theme - some thoughts

Obviously the team would never "tank" per se...but my take of tanking is playing the kids that could have a future on the team.  They went half way by cutting Mangold, Decker and company but hedged....There is zero percent chance that McCown, Forte, Kerley and some others will be with this team when they make a real run in a few yrs.  The only way for young players to get experience is to actually play.  Many QBs have said that the light didnt click on and the game didnt slow down until they actually played a few games.  This is why I'd rather play one of the kids....Petty actually has had moments...and Hack while looked awful is a high enough pick that he should get a few games to see if there is any progression there before the ax falls.  Winning a few games with McCown/Forte/Kerley does more harm then good IMO - it stunts the growth of the young players who need as many reps as possible.  If they were 3-5 with Petty/Hack/McGuire/and the rook WRs I'd be very happy.  3-5 with guys who will be gone soon is a waste in my eyes.  Im fine with Kearse and players that could be here in a few yrs - its the ones that clearly wont that I have a problem with....Chad Pennington was viewed as a wasted 1st rder until he actually got a chance to play...play the kids....no reason McCown/Forte/Kerley should continue at expense of Petty/Hack/McGuire/rookie WRs even if you think they are nowhere near as good...only one way to be sure...none of the aforementioned have gotten enough P/T in regular season games to be written off....the old fellas have and wont be here for the next Jet run.

Stats dont lie - odds are the best QBs are taken in the 1st rd...usually high - so playing the kids maximizes chances to land a higher pick no matter who it is...obviously you can find a star anywhere in the draft but in my eyes if youre not a playoff team id rather get a high pick out of it....with or without name player available.

As for Bowles - obviously he's not going to coach to lose and I dont blame him....I dont see him as the future....he struggles with adjustments, clock mgt, no idea of offense, and has zero inspirational ability in a game where millionaires need to be inspired.  In AZ he was known for creative blitzing schemes and I've seen none of that here.....I dont trust him in grooming a new QB nor taking the team into the future....that being said it's clear the guy is coaching for his job so why would he play the kids which is the paradox here....if he's coming back then tell him he's safe and just develop the kids....if he's not and keeps playing vets then fire him now and get a coach that will.  Stop wasting valuable game experience....

Thats my take anyway as a 40+ yr fan through yrs of losing.....sun is setting on Pats reign of terror....I want Jets kids experience primed and ready to make a run in 2 yrs....this yr means nothing but experience, development and picks to me....

good debate....lots of ways to skin a cat...this is my way.

Well I agree that doing it for the Thursday game is not ideal but it could be done. If they want to use that as the excuse I could understand that though. After this week's loss the change has to be made. I'm not sure how they could seriously evaluate what Petty and Hack are without giving them extended real game action. Frankly I doubt Petty is more than a career backup, but even establishing that makes more sense than trotting out a 37 year old journeyman. The Jets could bring McCown back either way, if he wants to be a mentor/QB coach he would need to realize that the young kids need to be given a chance.

so with the 49ers trading for Garoppollo...wonder if this opens up the door for Cousins to Jets...they have a ton of cap space...he'd be the best Jet QB since Chad....young with upside...then draft OL big time to protect him....the skins cant franchise him again can they?

This pretty much sums up my thoughts. Its not about "lets lose games so we can draft a shiny California Quarterback".   Its about having realistic expectations of your current roster and a thoughtful understanding of the state of the league (in terms of what pieces you need to win and what the competitive landscape will look like once you have the time/resources to acquire all those pieces).  Its about taking a proper accounting of your position and doing everything possible to acquire/develop assets and maximize upside.

Winning 5 games instead of 2 games doesn't work towards that goal, not with the current state of the roster and the guys that are playing. How many guys on this roster would you even give a 75% chance of being starters or key reserves 2-3 years from now? For me, that list is pretty short. Its like 5-6 at MOST.

If you're going to take anything positive from a season like this, it should be giving everyone on the roster with the ability to MAYBE make it to that list every opportunity to develop. They're not doing that, and that's why I'm upset.  Its not about McCown or Kerley (and to a lesser extent Kerse, although I think he's an asset to some extent) being "too good" its about the opportunity cost of playing them.

I think Cousins should get serious consideration from the Jets. Drafting and signing o-line and bringing back ASJ would need to be a priority. I actually think Powell, ASJ, Kearse, Enunwa, Anderson and Stewart would be as good of a supporting cast as he's had in Washington.

So found the answer....looks like it's possible they franchise but not probable at $34.5M per yr...so Jets can swoop in with a monster deal and not have to give any compensation for him....figure $30M per yr and they would still have $30M to spend.  Sign me up.....EDIT:  this am I just checked out Skins' cap for 2018 and as luck would have it they are $58M under...so lots of $ in DC to keep him....ugh

"As Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk notes, the Redskins would be highly unlikely to use the franchise tag again in 2018 as it would come with a 44% raise over his 2017 salary, meaning they would have to pay Cousins a $34.5 million salary. Instead, the Redskins could use the transition tag. That comes with a 20% raise and would bump his salary to $28.8 million.

The down side to the transition tag is that Cousins would be free to negotiate a long-term deal with other teams, with the Redskins having the right to match any offer. However, unlike the non-exclusive franchise tag, if the transition tag is used and the Redskins decide not to match another team's offer, Washington would not receive any compensation (a team using the non-exclusive franchise tag would be compensated two first-round draft picks)."

NFL suspended Jets WR Jeremy Kerley.

It is not yet known how long the suspension will last or what it is for, but it does not matter much from a fantasy perspective. Kerley has topped 45 yards once this season.
Hopefully Matt Forte will be next.

I fully support going after (trade or sign via FA) a veteran QB instead of the draft and destroy model that we've employed for the past 10 years.  The organization, fans, and the NY and national media make it next to impossible to develop anything other than a quivering chunk of interception prone goo back there.  Cousins, Alex Smith, and even Luck seem like decent options.

I may be slowly moving in the direction as well......first the Jets would have to be in a position to draft a franchise Qb....then be lucky enough for him to be the real deal....then after those 2 lotto tix are hit actually develop him which between the mediocre coaching staff and challenges you outlined it makes it almost impossible.  This isnt a bad team at all.......adding Cousins/A Smith along with another top 10 pick with 2 2d rd pick (for the love of god offense please!!!) would make them a contender next year.

They're just not bad enough to tank. They may go 5-11 or 6-10 but they're a Buster Skrine disaster away from being 5-4 right now, admittedly with a brutal schedule coming up. But they're a bad call and a bad quarter away from even, dare I say, 6-3 and ahead of the Patriots?

They run the ball well and do some good stuff. McCown is a competent journeyman. They're just an average team with a great defensive line and two up and coming safeties and some underrated running backs.

This is the most confusing season ever. I was back on the "tank" bandwagon after the last three weeks of collapsing...and then they go out and dominate a 5-2 team.

I guess we'll all end up getting what we expected: a 7-9 season under our new franchise QB Josh McCown. Yay!!!

positive notes:

- the defense looked fantastic last night and there's some nice young talent there.

-  I don't see Robby Anderson as a true No. 1 WR but he should be a good complementary piece to a good offense as a second/deep threat WR. Even if they do not add any pieces in the offseason, a group of Enunwa, Anderson, Kearse and Stewart is good enough (even though there's no true No. 1 WR in that group).

- ASJ got robbed of a TD again by the officials and must be brought back next season. He's a talent and a weapon at TE, something we have not seen for a long time.

- For all of Bowles flaws as a game day coach, he does have the team playing hard and overachieving. I hate to say it, but it will be hard for the Maccagnan/ownership to fire him.

- Forte was productive last night as he's a savvy runner and he is still an effective pass catcher but Powell and McGuire are just the better runners right now and need to push for more playing time.

- Somehow the offensive line has been better than the sum of it's parts but the team needs to add talent there this offseason.

It is what it is. Football purgatory until we luck into a QB somehow
I was on the tank bandwagon, but Bowles has this team playing hard, and we're beginning to see some of that young talent make noise. If they signed, say, Cousins (who could easily have a nice 5-7 year run), and drafted a true #1 WR, all of a sudden, this is a playoff team with a pretty tough D.

This season has me on a roller coaster....first I want them to lose...then win...then lose again....I'm just along for the ride now....looking at the rest of the schedule, its reasonably optimistic that they could be 8-7 going into the last game vs NE....would be great experience for the young players to get a big game like that under their belt win or loss.

This season is looking similar to the 1st Fitzmagic run except with less overpaid vets so that is good.....there is still the issue of older players at key positions but darn how can you not like McNown....dude is 38 and playing some great ball....if they go the young QB route again I can see him here next year as a bridge...if Brady can play until 45 why not McNown for a few yrs lol....since they wont be high enough to grab a top QB...I'm ok with best offensive player in the 1st rd followed by a QB for the future with one of the 2 2d rd picks.  Give McCown another yr and cut one of Hack/Petty loose.

The defense is coming along and last pm was the 1st time I can remember Bowles opening up the AZ bag of pass rushing....maybe he's getting more comfortable but I'll admit he's got the team playing hard and unless the wheels completely fall off he'll be back....I just hope the OC doesnt get swiped because he has shown some potential to be the best OC they've had in yrs.

Young team that is playing hard, good draft picks next yr including 2 2d rders....plus $60M in cap room...  not bad.

McNown....dude is 38 and playing some great ball....
I don't know if I'd go so far as "great". He makes some really really bad throws including a few last night that should have been easy interceptions. He is a gamer though and the comparison to Fitz is apt.

true - should have said great compared to how I thought he would be playing....there's a lot of bad QBs out there as we've seen an McCown has been a pleasant surprise.  I dont see why he couldnt bridge another yr for a few games if they go young....and I wouldnt shed a tear at all if they replaced him with an Alex Smith/Cousins type as well...obviously status quo is not an option!

It's a fair comparison. One difference is that McCown seems more grounded. Fitz was a total disaster last year and would not take any accountability.  Totally different attitudes.

good point - McCown has a much better team attitude - Fitz hated any inference that he wasnt a top QB in the league who would never be benched....McCown was even quoted recently as saying if it's time for them to look at the kids soon he'l be on board 100%....really hope he is around next year in some capacity and would like to see him as a QB coach.

Interesting Sunday off....Giants look like the disaster I thought the Jets would be....my joy of watching the G-men getting killed in the media will be replaced when they land a QB stud for the next 15 yrs!

As for TB - they look like a disaster....with a chance Winston doesn't play and we get a Fitz-Magic revenge matchup?  Can't wait!

Fitzpatrick v. McCown - they should flex that one to Sunday Night.
