2018-19 NBA Thread: Magic Johnson leaves Lakers in order to pursue other jobs to be completely terrible at (5 Viewers)

They seem to be focusing on defense with these moves.

The Rondo thing concerns me because it reads like insurance that Ball's injury is more serious than we think. Or maybe a Ball trade is in the works.

I assume they know Randle isn't going to take a home town discount and wasn't going to sign a 1 year deal so they had to let him go. They're all about keeping their cap space free for next season it appears.

I don't know where they are cap space wise for this season now, but Brook Lopez would actually be a good fit with what they have now. I have no idea if he'd take a 1 year deal though.
My guess is a Ball trade is in the works.

I've done my best not to watch the Lakers but looking at Randle's stat line he looks like he has a bright future........really a good move dumping him for an 82 year old Rondo?
Looking at his stat line isn't the best. Lots of guys put up good numbers on bad teams. I would say Randle would be a great 6th man on a championship caliber team, but do you really want to pay that kind of guy 20 million a year?

Can we please have Ball traded in the next 24 hours. The last 48 hour rollercoaster ride the Laker fans would be on would be so fun to reread.

You forget that he lead the Warriors to the best record while Kerr was recovering from surgery?
Did he really have to coach those guys though? Coaching the Warriors vs Coaching LeBron and a bunch of over the hill Veterans is completely different.

I found the Lakers next signing

The Pacers waived Al Jefferson on Monday.

The 34-year-old veteran should be able to snag a minimum level deal with a playoff team, but he's well past his days of relevancy in fantasy hoops.

Well to be fair, I wouldn’t want to be paying Rondo 9 million either.

And by Ball trade, I mean Kwahi trade.  And by Kwahi trade, I mean the 62.5 win line make 1% sense.
It puts the Stephenson signing in a different light as well - I assume Ingram or Kuzma (maybe both?) will be getting shipped out too so Stephenson fills in some depth there.

Rondo also had his best year in nearly a decade (minus the whole not playing defensive thing) at age 32. Not something I would bet on, especially when he gets disgruntled when LeBron is yelling at him and he's playing 18-20 mpg.

I’m assuming 2 of the 3 get shipped (along with a draft pick or two).  The NBA is also a wing league now, so signing all the 6’5” to 6’9” guys you can makes some sense as well.  Of course, I wouldn’t have spent 9 million on Rondo, but he’s also the last NBA starter quality PG left on the board.

Randle to the Pelicans for 2/18, per Woj. That's incredibly reasonable.
Wow, great move by the Pelicans, and now it is even more dumb for the Lakers. 9 million for Randle, vs 9 million for Rondo.

For someone who wanted it to be easier on himself LeBron and the Lakers sure are making it so he will have to be superman just to get to the 2nd round.

I’d also add that these are all 1 year deals, so if they don’t work out this year, the Lakers can take a mulligan and try again next summer.

When will the Warriors have to make a tough decision or two regarding their top 4? Is the assumption that Klay will take a discount and they'll be able to keep everyone? Green has a chance to qualify for the super-max this year, if that happens it seems impossible to keep everyone happy.
I say they win one more, then Klay and Draymond will want to get paid. Will take Max deals where they can. KD will decide if he wants to stay with Steph or hit the road again. 4 titles in 5 years is impressive but at some point they'll all want to get theirs.

Except one guy can stay one the floor in the playoffs and the other can’t.

Yeah that's surprising he didn't command more.

2nd year is player option so it's essentially the same deal Rondo signed. I like Rondo a lot as a primary guard like NO allowed him to be in the playoffs after Cousins went down. Really odd to pick him over Randle on a team with Lebron/Ball because he's essentially a non-factor in that role. Should be interesting to see if Ball's heading out.

Rondo signing got to lead one to believe Ball is either the "big" piece in the Kawhi trade or for another player.

Lakers get:  Kawhi

Spurs get :  J. Jackson and Kuzma

Phoenix:  Ball

Free agent Julius Randle has agreed to a two-year, $18M deal with New Orleans, league sources tell ESPN. Player option second year.

If Lakers stretch Deng they would have 16mill to use.  Wouldn't surprise me if Boogie took a 1/16mill deal.  Re-enter market next season.

Lebron, Pope, Kawhi, Ingram and Cousins.

Rondo, Stephens, McGee, Hart, Wagner and Zubac.

Just need the Euro-shooter come buyout time.

The weirdest thing about all these Lakers' signings is how fast this is happening.  I mean, take a breath, dudes.  Unless, I guess, they have a very specific plan.  Although that seems hard to believe right now.

GSW, Houston, Boston.  Only teams I'd put ahead of that Laker lineup.
The T-wolves, Pelicans, 76ers, and Jazz would beat that team in a 7 game series if all guys are healthy and probably beat them in 6 games. There are a handful of other teams that would be a toss up.

Plus who do you think they would see in the 2nd round? It would be Houston or Golden State.

You're way off.
