I remain convinced that Gill will be successful at the mid-major level. He's a man of high character, a good father-figure-type leader, and the kind of coach that players will run through walls for.
Re: the Kansas move, I think he (rightfully) knew the UB program was at the end of its run. The team took a major step back in 2009 after winning the MAC Championship in 2008. The best QB in program history (through that time) had graduated, James Starks got injured in preseason and missed the entire year, and Naaman Roosevelt was a senior. The anointed starter QB ended up ditching UB for Cal to piggyback on his brother Keenan Allen's success. I have to think that Gill saw the writing on the wall and jumped at the chance to move back to the Midwest with a step-up in competition. He had dropped from 8 wins to 5 wins, in the MAC, and a Big 12 school is offering an opportunity.....I'd take it in a heartbeat.
I think what gets lost in a lot of his success is that he left the cupboard comparatively bare from a recruiting standpoint. His major recruiting bright spot was opening a pipeline into Florida, which ultimately landed Khalil Mack, the major feather in his recruiting cap. But that 2008 title team was mostly built on Jim Hofher recruits. Gill squeezed every bit of talent out of those teams, and I'm convinced he can do the same at Liberty or other mid-majors. Can he recruit in the Big 12 or another major conference? How much of the Kansas failure falls on him, and how much falls on Kansas? I have no idea.
