2018 College Football Thread: Local man buys some teenage champions a 4 for 4 (2 Viewers)

Why is that?
I've always kind of rooted for the Cougs for whatever reason and that rooting interest was intensified when Mike Leach came along.  I could listen to him talk all day long about any subject.  Just find him fascinating.

But I'd also like at least one team from the Pac12 to represent the conference well.  After last year's bowl record (1-8 I think?) I'm about as negative on this conference as I've ever been.  A ray of sunshine in the form of a little team from far away Pullman winning a Rose Bowl for a school that desperately wants one would be a nice change.

First of all, I totally agree about Leach.  Second, HONK!!

Oregon had an infrastructure in place ...
What the heck happened up there? Thanks to Nike money, aren't they at least on par with Alabama in cash and facilities?

Though I do wonder if Alabama would win an intercollegiate contest consisting of "Number of boosters willing to burn $1 million in cash on demand to guarantee one first down in a game."

Money isn't everything, see Under Armor and Maryland.

You're also forgetting three major factors:

1) And this is the most important one, geography.  Alabama is deep in the heart of fertile recruitment grounds.  The south is teeming with 4 and 5 star recruits.  Oregon, not so much.  That matters.  A lot.  This state and the Pac NW in general is not producing elite football players.  Never has, never will.

2) Alabama has something Oregon will never have - prestige.  How many championships does Bama have?  10? That also matters.  The best recruits want to win it all and become history.

3)  Saban.  He's the best coach in the sport.  All the Nike money in the world isn't bringing in Saban.  Or anybody close.  Chip Kelly was plucked from New Hampshire and no longer looks like an evil genius.  Saban is the king.  Oregon gets.....Mario Cristoball.

ETA: On point 1, Geography - kids would prefer to play in a place where their families can travel to watch them play and be close enough to go home when they want.  Eugene, Oregon might as well be Mars for a number of prized recruits.  It is FAR away from the fertile recruiting grounds.  California is an exception but it's still pretty far transit from Eugene to LA or Bay Area.

Is haskins ever a threat to keep the zone read?
Exactly what I’ve always thought and was happy that they gave Martell some work finally. You have to at least honor that with him.  That’s why Barrett was effective even though he was far less of a passer than Hankins.

I said at the beginning of the year that Martell seemed to be a much better fit for what urbs wants to do. I'm not really sure urbs knows what to do with a pure passer. Just not his style.

DEFENSE!

Bama needs zero help from the refs. Block in the back call to negate a Miss St TD was horrendous. I was hoping for back-to-back shutouts, but this isn't the way I wanted to see it.

Miss St has an imaginary 7 points on the board.

That series right before halftime was a disaster.

Tua isn’t himself clearly...just no spring in his step...don’t see how he’ll improve until after the SECC.

Pruitt will be a good HC.

It did take half of the 3rd quarter for someone to score again in the OKSt/OU game.   Defensive struggle.
