2018 MLB Regular Season Thread! Current thread batting average: .420 (1 Viewer)

Mauer was three quarters of the way to Cooperstown about five years ago but the move from behind the plate hurt his chances.

He's certainly better than some of the bad old timer vets committee HoFers but will suffer in comparison to career catchers who were voted in recently.

Just looking over Mauer's stats now, he had a much better career than I really gave him credit for.  Being buried in a mostly anonymous Twins team, never winning a single playoff series in his career did not help his cause either.  But I mean if you told me he led the AL in slugging percentage one year I'd have told you you were crazy.  That MVP year was really an aberration as it's the only year he hit more than 13 home runs in his career, but he was a very good offensive player when he was healthy.  He won 3 gold gloves as catcher too, although I never really thought of him as an elite defender.

He sure made an awful lot of money over his career too.

Mauer was a 3-sport star at Cretin-Derham Hall, a Catholic high school in St Paul that was an all-sports powerhouse in the 80s-90s-00s.  The school has already produced a baseball HOFer (Paul Molitor), a Heisman Trophy winner (Chris Weinke), plus a few other MLB and NFL players.  He started making local headlines as the freshman catcher hitting .500 for the Cretin varsity.

When I say "3-sport star", I mean star.  Mauer was a 3000-yard, 40-TD QB his senior year.  He was a recruiting coup for Florida State to play QB for the Seminoles, and Mauer was heralded a one of the many great Cretin QBs like Weinke and the Walsh brothers.  But when Mauer's senior baseball season was so good it was clear he would be a first-round pick (he hit .600 with zero strikeouts), he committed to the MLB draft.  He was also a 20 PPG point guard who was All-State in basketball.

The Twins had the first pick that summer.  The consensus first pick in that draft was a USC pitcher named Mark Prior.  But the Twins balked at Prior's Boras's signing bonus demands and picked the local kid instead.

David Wright was a sandwich pick in that draft.  With he and Mauer retiring, it looks like Jeff Mathis will be last man standing among 2001 1st rounders.

Juan Soto passed Mel Ott tonight for most homers for a teenager with 20 bombs. He is now only behind Bryce Harper (22) and Tony Conigliaro (24) on the the all-time list among teenagers.

He’s passed Junior, Ott, and Mantle. He’s more Rod Carew than Mantle, but the plate discipline is already Mantle-esque. I think we’re looking at a 30/100/310/430/500 hitter over the next X amount of years. I love Acuna too, but Soto is and will always be a better hitter IMO.

Today's Cubs/Reds game was the fifty-second 1-0 score of the season. Last year there were twenty-nine, total.

The NL Batting Title winner might not hit .320 (Gennett is currently at .320).

It wouldnt shock me of the commish starts putting rules in place limiting shifts. Offense drives ratings and the shift is killing offense. I have no problems with shifts but the writing is on the wall here about the current state of baseball. Batters dont care about striking out and focus on launch angle and when they hit it on the ground there is a very poor chance of it being a base hit. Lefties almost have no chance.

Apologies for this likely not being the right topic to post in but as it’s the most active baseball thread hope no one kills me for it.

Anyone know on yahoo fantasy baseball if they immediately update position eligibility? I’ve got Mejia needing one more start at catcher (which he’ll get today) to gain eligibility. Tomorrow I’m starting the title game and my other catcher has no game. Anyone know if Mejia will have the C eligibility come tomorrow or will I need to add a catcher if I want to start one? Thanks.

He’s like a more successful Drew Henson

:lmao:

Weinke was a senior when I was a junior.  He was the Cretin QB between Steve Walsh (the Canes QB after Kosar and Testaverde), and Steve’s brother Chris (also a scholarship QB).

Weinke’s baseball decision came really late.  He had moved in to his dorm in Tallahassee and was at Florida State for a week or so when he decided to sign with the Blue Jays.

Weinke also played varsity hockey for Cretin.  He was a pretty good defenseman - not good enough to play D-I college hockey, but a good high school player by Minnesota standards.

But that was an era when athletes still played multiple sports.  When I think about who the top athletes were in Minnesota when I was high school, guys who went on to play in the NFL, MLB, NHL, or were dominant college players... almost all of them played at least two varsity sports, a lot played three.
Meanwhile, they ended up with Chris Rix, who couldn’t even play one sport.

He got the C today

Snell wins his 20th. Say somehow the rays caught the A’s and made the playoffs. Out of the 10 teams where would they be in terms of chances to win it?

Honestly I doubt they would even get to the World Series.  Cleveland, Houston and Boston are all significantly better IMO.  That's not a knock on Tampa at all.  It's just a testament to how good the AL is this year.

I’d put them 9th ahead of the Yankees

also they should probably shut down Snell, 20 wins seems like enough

Houston and Boston yea. I don’t think Cleveland is significantly better. At least not since July.

You might be right about Cleveland.  They just look scary to me on paper with a potential rotation featuring Kluber, Carrasco and Bauer (assuming he’s healthy) and a few studs in the lineup.  Not sure how the bullpen will hold up but if Miller is back to his normal self, they seem pretty deep.

Health is their variable.  If some combination of Kluber, Bauer, Miller, and Allen (don't think his issues are health related though) can get right then this team is the best bet in the AL.  Big if though.

This will be the first year in MLB history without a pitcher having four complete games. No one even got three complete games.

Complete game has become kind of a meaningless stat, imo.

Since 2000, only one pitcher has had more than 10 complete games in a season.  Max Scherzer who is one of the most durable pitchers I can think of off the top of my head, has 10 complete games in his entire 11 year career.

With the amount of money you're paying these ace pitchers, why ruin their arms by trying to extend an extra 25-50 pitches to get a complete game when you have a bullpen?

This year's MLB complete game leaders include the likes of Erik Skoglund, Erick Fedde, and Trevor Williams

Skoglund and Fedde have zero complete games.

I think the increase in strikeouts has something to do with the decline in complete games.  SO/9 are up by 1.5 in the past decade alone.  A lot of those come from RPs but everybody is throwing harder and fewer pitchers are pitching to contact.

that's what I get for not double checking my sources.

Was probably wrong about only one guy getting 10+ complete games since 2000 too :bag:

The Giants GM position is open but it's not a very attractive position.  They managed to stay under the CBT this year and will start next season at around $140M.  Even blowing it up will have a two year fuse because none of their current contracts (and there are a bunch) look very tradable.  I think they have to get something for Bumgarner but I said that last year too and ended up with Evan Longoria.

It remains to be seen if this organization is ready to change.  Bobby Evans was let go but Sabean and Bochy are still going to be around.

@Eephus

How serious are you taking this weekend? Your boys have the chance to incinerate the playoff hopes of the Dodgers. Bumgarner goes on Friday. Do you think they should bring him in for relief on Saturday and Sunday?

The Giants get to decide whether a nationwide audience gets to see Mary Hart and Larry King sitting behind home plate, or not.

The Giants are 5-18 in September.  They've lined up their three best SPs but runs have been really scarce.
