Heyman

Things are heating up with Harper. Intensified is the word I heard. Phillies are the favorite, but word remains that nothing’s done yet. Will be a long-term deal.

david samson (who i have no idea how he is suddenly a cbs sports insider and generally a scumbag as far as I can tell), was saying earlier that 10/310 seemed like the likely deal.

Rumors spreading that Harper will be a Phillie for 10 years and 310 million. Boras gets bailed out again by an owner. Still doesn’t beat Stanton, but will certainly beat Machado. Like saving half a face for the player and the agent. Now, back to your regularly scheduled rumors.

:loco:  If that turns out to be the contract, it will be interesting to hear if anyone was even that close or they outbid themselves. (Not that Middleton even cares)

Well wash originally offered 10/300.  Imagine if you are nats and after all this  you ultimately get outbid by a measly 3%

So after all the comments about how crazy this is most guys are signing at the same time as last year and the big guys are getting 250-300m. It looked broken for a while there, but I’m starting to think when it washes out it will end up about the same as normal with maybe a slight delay on tier 3 guys.

One thing I read that I thought was interesting is Moustakous declined a $17.4M qualifying offer from KC in 2017 for 2018 season

Last year with incentives he made $8.7 and this year he signed a $10M one year contract, so in 2 years he made just $1.3M more than he could have if he signed the offer.

Sound like he made more money which is nice

Bochy HOF consideration?  Looks like he will end at about .500 at best, but those 3 rings and good success for a number of years in SD.
I think so. Jay Jaffe posted on Twitter that every other manager with 3 titles is in the HOF.  I think that's what separates him from a Gene Mauch.

Harper and Philadelphia has that same vibe as Carl Crawford and Boston awhile back. Crawford clearly did not want to play for Boston, but Theo broke the bank for him, and the union leaned on him to not leave money on the table. So he signed. And it didn't work out.

Managers get elected via vet committees not the writers' vote.  Bochy's titles and career wins are solid HoF credentials but what will really put him over the top is that he's been in the game for forty years without making many enemies.

Reminds me a lot of JD Martinez last year too. He didnt sign until February 19th because he obviously didnt want to play for Boston, then went on to have a horrible season destroying the team's season, and now everyone hates him.

Big news - Finally -

BREAKING: Free agent star Manny Machado has agreed to a deal with the San Diego Padres, league sources tell ESPN.

ETA: 10 years, $300 mm

Are you assuming he would have made < $1.3M this year if he'd signed that deal in 2017 (8.7 + 10 vs 17.4 + x)?

don't care how talented or even how much - a 10-yr contract to a sour#### is waaaay stoopit
He's only 26. I don't think this will look that bad for SD at the end.

He's pretty good.
Robinson Cano put up a 3.2 WAR (half) season at age 35 so production into a player's mid 30s isn't impossible.  Machado has more offensive and defensive value than peak Cano did but actual mileage may vary.

Projecting market AAV in the ten year timeframe is folly anyway.  The next CBA or two will change the economics in ways nobody can predict.

San Diego, Wow! How many prime time games will they get? How much will the national audience get to see one of the young stars of the game :oldunsure:  How long will he last there?

Padres are loaded with prospects, especially arms. Very little chance they make any noise in 2019, but if they start piecing together a young rotation by the end of the season they could set themselves up to make the playoffs in 2020. Dodgers-Padres games could start to be of national interest.

If they're not good by 2021, Manny probably starts whining and they look for a big-market team to take the contract off their hands.

Imagine getting 30 mil a year to live in San Diego and somebody thinking you should live in Boston instead.

Padres are loaded with prospects,
And i'm sure Manny will happily slide over to 3rd to make room for the DP combo of Tatis/Urias

Athletes have completely lost sight of the fact that, though they are paid what they are because of their ability, they are still paid to help win ballgames

@JSalisburyNBCS: A source in Las Vegas tells me that Phillies owner John Middleton’s plane is on the ground in that city. Vegas is Bryce Harper’s home town. No other details, but talks clearly ongoing.
