2018 MLB Regular Season Thread! Current thread batting average: .420 (1 Viewer)

Seems like a pretty good haul for Kimbrel. It makes sense for the Sox, trading away mostly position players who are probably going to be blocked for the time being for a player who's going to fill a need now. Boston has the kind of payroll that can easily absorb the luxury of a paid/elite closer, but I do wonder if those chips would be better cashed in on a starter. Or even used to faciliate a HanleyDump, and using that money to get a starter.

I guess it's good of SD management to give Preller the rope to push for it (which he promptly hung himself with), but at least they're letting him oversee the rebuild now, I guess.

Impressive haul for Kimbrel, arguably stronger that what SD gave up to ATL last year.

My man Preller is going to win back to back hot stove titles.

Ugh, Kimbrel to Red Sox
Interested to see what comes back in return. Preller is an interesting dude.
Manuel Margot, Javier Guerra, Logan Allen and Carlos Asuaje
Wow.

I'm a Sox fan and was expecting Margot & Guerra to be moved this offseason as the Sox system is deep at SS & CF but I thought they would be in a deal for an ace. Kimbrel is a stud but he's still closer and only throw about 60 innings. Logan Allen is a nice spec piece as well. Definitely an overpay

The obvious takeaway from the Kimbrel deal is that the Red Sox are going to be a major player in pursuit of a top FA pitcher. A TBD stud, Porcello, Buchholz, Kelly, Miley with Rodriguez, Barnes and Owens available would be a workable rotation.

Dombrowski gave up a lot though. Kimbrel is a great closer but he's making near market rate. Boston doesn't have to look at pricetags as much as most other clubs. They still have a deep minor league system but it's hard to see them giving up another package like this one for big league help.

Pleased with the return, as we have holes too big to carry $18.5M in back end of the bullpen talent (Kimbrel + Benoit), but losing a talent like Kimbrel is never easy. More hiccups last year than in previous year, but boy is it fun to be in the stadium when Axel starts warming the pipes.

As a Reds fan, I'm hoping they can get a similar return for Chapman.

Doesn't the "established closer" joke only work on Joe Borowski and Antonio Alfonseca types? Aroldis Chapman really is established as one of the best relievers in baseball.

Jerry Dipoto will not be outprellered this winter.

Mariners get: Leonys Martin and Anthony Bass

Rangers get: Tom Wilhelmsen, James Jones and a PTBNL

Bump Joaquin Benoit and Delino DeShields on your cheatsheets.

Having James Jones on the roster will only help the Rangers in their pursuit of Lebron if he opts out next summer

Wrong James Jones. If I'm not mistaken, this one is the twin brother of the receiver from the Green Bay Packers.

John Shea @JohnSheaHeyKyle Blanks is close to finalizing a minor-league deal with the Giants and has a good chance to make the team out of spring training.

Probably signals the end of the Marlon Byrd era

Dodgers are down to Dave Roberts, Gabe Kapler, or Bud Black for the new manager position.

San Diego is looking to move Tyson Ross and/or Matt Kemp.

Mets open to moving Wheeler.

I always liked him. Decent hitter for being such a behemoth, he just has never been able to stay on the field, obviously.

Makes sense for the Rangers. Martin was blocked by DeShields at the top of the Depth Chart, and has Lewis Brinson nipping at his heels from the minors. In return, you add another big arm to an already solid bullpen. Jon Daniels says the PTBNL is "significant". We shall see.

There is always one week of the season where someone considers picking up Kyle Blanks for their fantasy team.
I had him for a couple weeks this past year. Worked out OK if you could keep an eye out for his many days off
He would be rosterable if he ever landed in a straight platoon situation. I don't see that happening in SF. Posey moves to 1B when Belt sits vs LHP. The best case scenario would be a LF platoon but even if that happens, there wouldn't be many games where he sees 4 PAs.

The Giants extend Brandon Crawford with a 6/$75M deal. They buy his last two arbitration years and have him locked up until his age 34 season.

The AAV isn't bad although there's the usual potential for an overpay towards the tail end of the contract. I don't think he's really a 5.6 WAR player; I suspect 2015 was more of a career year than a breakout. But 3 WAR between his bat and glove seems realistic.

Crawford gets $1.2m bonus, $5.8m in '16, $8m in '17 then $15m in each of the four FA years. #sfgiants
The arbitration year numbers are right around where I would have expected them to be. It's a typical move from an organization that values continuity.

"Values continuity" is just a synonym for lazy.

The Anaheims sign UT Cliff Pennington for 2/$3.75M. His 0.0 postseason ERA is just a bonus.
I can't remember who it was but some team signed a utility guy to a 2-year contract for no good reason last off-season.

Do you really have that little faith in your farm system that they can't produce a utility guy in a year?

[checks Angels farm system]

Oh.

The Rodriguez deal makes sense for both sides. It's a good salary dump for the Brewers who don't need an old $7.5M reliever. They have a couple of decent in-house options to close in Jeremy Jeffress and Will Smith. The Tigers bullpen needs help and K-Rod has been effective.

The minor leaguer who went to Milwaukee is reported to be Venezuelan 2B Javier Betancourt. He's young and has some upside but hasn't hit in A ball.

ETA: Baseball Prospectus rates Betancourt at the Tigers' #8 prospect. This probably says more about the organization than it does about Betancourt.

I'm assuming that somebody in Boston's minor league system straightened Rich Hill out somehow last year, anyone have any details/info on what happened?

A's were apparently outbid by a couple of teams, but could guarantee Hill a spot in the rotation, which sealed the deal. Likely to be a nice bit of business, even if for only a year.

the Long Island Ducks are the new market inefficiency
Current Ducks of note: Little League hero Sean Burroughs, Lew Ford (also the bench coach), and JC Romero.

Hill's made $3mm in his big league career, dunno about the minors. He signed for 300K in 2002 with the Cubs, which was the third time he was drafted. So even with what he made in the minors, he's going to more than double what he's made to-date. Which is awesome, obviously.

Lew Ford is a baseball vagabond. He played in the Mexican League last year at the age of 38.

Morosi saying Dodgers have had talks with Cleveland for a starter... Salazar, Carrasco, and Bauer have been mentioned with a possibility of Puig being involved.
