2018 MLB Regular Season Thread! Current thread batting average: .420 (1 Viewer)

the Long Island Ducks are the new market inefficiency
Current Ducks of note: Little League hero Sean Burroughs, Lew Ford (also the bench coach), and JC Romero.

Hill's made $3mm in his big league career, dunno about the minors. He signed for 300K in 2002 with the Cubs, which was the third time he was drafted. So even with what he made in the minors, he's going to more than double what he's made to-date. Which is awesome, obviously.
Lew Ford is a baseball vagabond. He played in the Mexican League last year at the age of 38.
I'll never forget the first time I saw him in a Twins uniform. Couldn't believe he was a white guy.

I call this Ricky Proehlitis

the Brewers put their teardown on temporary hold and dealt for Jonathan Villar from the Astros. He could be a source of cheap speed in fantasy if he could nail down a job but you can pretty much say the same about Jean Segura and Scooter Gennett.

The Astros acquired Dickensian-named RHP Cy Sneed who had a decent looking year in A ball (2.58 ERA, 1.127 WHIP, 4.36 K/BB). I assume the Brewers know something about Sneed that the stats don't show

Yeah, he was their 3rd round pick in 2014 and hasn't really done anything to lower his stock since. Guess Stearns isn't a fan?

Cubs claim Jack Leathersich off waivers. Relief pitcher with some absolutely insane k/9 numbers in the minors. But had TJ surgery last summer.

"Ricky Proehlitis" is a much better name than the more popular "Reggie Cleveland All-Stars".

I'm still surprised every time I see photo or video of Troy O'Leary.

Marlins allegedly shopping Jose Fernandez
God. Shut it down.
For months now there’s been speculation about the Marlins looking to trade 24-year-old outfielder Marcell Ozuna, whom they demoted to the minors and then kept there far longer than reasonable.

And now Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that “multiple teams” have talked to the Marlins about acquiring Ozuna, quoting one source who says: "I’d be surprised if they keep him. Loria clearly can’t stand the guy and everybody knows it"

Sending him down to Triple-A for an extended period and letting the whole world know you hate him is sure to drive up value.

In the Marlins' defense, Ozuna was in a horrible slump when they demoted him. He's not very good and at age 25, he's getting to the point in his development where results matter more than potential. I don't know why a team would trade prospects for Ozuna when they could pick up Domonic Brown off the street.

Counterpoint: How many 23 year old CF have slashed 269/313/455 while dropping 23 bombs lately? That's a commodity, even if it was at least partially a mirage.

If they didn't like him, they could've sold high in 2015 prior to crushing his trade value.

Dipoto also DFAs former 1.02 pick Danny Hultzen. Another cautionary tale of TINSTAAPP

I guess we'll find out if there are any clubs committed enough to rebuilding to use a 40 man slot to rehab a guy who hasn't been healthy since 2012.

Jesse Chavez to Toronto. He's no longer part of the market inefficiency. On the bright side, the Jays have their David Price replacement.

The money is pretty much even on that swap, and Castro is younger at a harder to field position, but you have to imagine that it would end up as Castro + ________ for Gardner.

Yeah it's gotta be. Castro has compiled 2.3 WAR over the last three seasons and Gardner is at 11.7 over the same timeframe. The money might be even, but Gardner is a far better player even being 7 years older

yeah I read another article that the Yankees want Castro but not for Gardner. Then they suggested carrasco for gardner which I would love but I can't imagine why the Indians would do that.

Regardless of how the Chavez deal turns out, flipping Hendriks was a nice piece of business for Toronto.

They originally picked up on waivers after he failed as a starter in Minnesota, included him as a throw-in in a 2014 deadline deal for Danny Valencia, got him back for a no hit minor league catcher after the season, converted him into a decent reliever and got a good year from him and finally sold high to rent a useful arm in Jesse Chavez.

Hendriks not only was once traded for Valencia but Oakland will be the third time they've been teammates.

This is a bad post.

To say they're "selling high" is to imply that Hendriks is going to turn into a pumpkin at midnight, when he pretty clearly seems to fit the mold of the failed-starter-cum-excellent-reliever, a la Wade Davis. His ratios are superb, and are backed up by a pretty huge jump in velocity on both his slider and fastball.

I typically think trades for relievers aren't great, as the ability for a starter to have more impact is evident, but 4 years of Hendriks seems far more valuable than one year of Chavez. And I like Chavez, but in his last year of arbitration with a remote chance of warranting a qualifying offer, not to mention that he's never gotten close to 200 IP in a season, his ROI is likely to be lower (MLBTR projects 4.7mm in arbitration). And probably not nearly high enough for a team that needs to spend money carefully.

I didn't say anything about Hendriks' future; just that the Blue Jays got him for nothing and flipped him for something twice.

Your face is a bad post.

I think it's both a good deal for both teams but also some nice maneuvering by Toronto. Most teams pull off slick deals like this sometimes (grab a guy for very little only to see value increase and move for profit). Assuming Liam is going to be a good (or better) reliever going forward, it really helps the A's for what their goals are, and assuming Toronto goes for it again, Chavez helps the Jays with what their goals are.

In other words...girls, you're both pretty.

The Dodgers have come to terms with two top Cuban prospects. According to industry sources, outfielder Yusniel Diaz, 19, ranked No. 3 on MLB.com's Top 30 International Prospects list, and second baseman Omar Estevez, 17, have agreed to a bonuses worth $15.5 and $6 million, respectively, pending physicals. The Dodgers have not confirmed the deals.

Diaz sported a .348 batting average with an on-base percentage of .448 and a slugging percentage of .440 during his first season with the Havana Industriales. He also hit 13 doubles and three triples in 65 games for the Industriales. Diaz, who is sometimes referred to as "Yusnier," showed athleticism along with some hitting and power. He has plus speed.

Estevez showed above-average power in games and solid raw power in batting practice. He has a muscular body, but he's not too bulky and has been praised for his lateral agility at second base. He doesn't have the strongest arm but shows good actions on defense.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Diaz was the favorite to win the award for the top rookie in Cuba's Serie Nacional, the island's top league, last season, but he defected before he could be given the award.

It's been an eventful three months for the Dodgers on the international market. The club signed Cuban right-handed pitcher Yadiel Alvarez for $16 million, ranked No. 1 by MLB.com, outfielder Starling Heredia (ranked No. 7) for $2.6 million; infielder Ronny Brito (ranked No. 22) for $2 million; outfielders Christopher Arias for $500,000 and Carlos Rincon for $350,000; and shortstop Oneal Cruz for $950,000.

Must be nice. They're going to be capped the next couple years, so they're going all-out now.

I remember reading a comment from Friedman (I think) that they were going to be getting their payroll down to the general vicinity of the other top teams, e.g. $200mm. Dunno if that's shtick or what.

This looks delicious. Can't wait to listen to it.I had an Andy Van Slyke jersey as a kid and was disappointed when the Cardinals traded him. The story behind the trade was that Whitey couldn't handle another season of Van Slyke in the clubhouse and wanted to get rid of him. Reading the highlights here, I'm seeing how that could have happened.

And yes, as the author said, those quotes were not the quotes of a man about to get hired as a major league coach any time soon.

Fantasy downgrade: Felix Hernandez

Airing out Mariners laundry is one thing, but seems pretty ####ty to air out clubhouse matters that his kid (assumedly) shared with him. It's fascinating, don't get me wrong, just seems kinda crumby.

Morosi saying Dodgers have had talks with Cleveland for a starter... Salazar, Carrasco, and Bauer have been mentioned with a possibility of Puig being involved.
Oh man, Puig in Cleveland has fiasco written all over it.
Assuming the Cubs offered Soler (yes, a big assumption, I know), I wonder who they'd rather have.

"Could upset clubhouse chemistry because his dad is a ####head with a microphone"

ETA: love that in the midst of the family tree shtick we both passed on the opportunity to drop a real one between Slick and Scott Van Slyke.

Robinson Cano reportedly suffering from SAD and/or finds the cuisine in the greater Seattle area to be severely lacking, and wants to take his very expensive services elsewhere. 8 years and $196mm left and 33 years old, glll with that.

This was great. A lot of the participants took it seriously and assembled reasonable teams at reasonable payrolls for their franchises.

Price and Heyward have gotta be hoping the market for them is pretty much what happened here.

Best line: Dodgers Recommended Budget: LOL
