2018 MLB Regular Season Thread! Current thread batting average: .420 (3 Viewers)

I think the true greatness in this trade is that Dipoto was in the hospital for a blood clot issue and even that didn't stop him from continuing his wheeling and dealing ways.

With the Rays getting Morton and probably EE, its like they are specifically getting guys that destroy the Yankees. I don't like it one bit.

The Cubs beat writer tweeted that the team had sent a scout to watch Tulowitzki work out. A half dozen other teams were there, as well. She said that the team he most wants to play for--Oakland--did not attend.

If Tulowitzki can accept where he is career-wise, and can have the same mindset as Chase Utley and Matt Holliday as they approached the end, he could be a very valuable addition to a roster.

MLB Trade Rumors predicted the big FA contracts before the hot-stove started and so far they've been pretty darn good.

Patrick Corbin - Predicted 6/129 - Received 6/140
Nathan Eovaldi - Predicted 4/60 - Received 4/67
JA Happ - Predicted 3/48 - Received 2/34 w/ option
Andrew McCutchen - Predicted 3/45 - Received 3/50
Josh Donaldson - Predicted 1/20 - Received 1/23
Charlie Morton - Predicted 2/32 - Received 2/30
Jeurys Familia - Predicted 3/33 - Received 3/30
Joe Kelly - Predicted 3/27 - Received 3/35
Lance Lynn - Predicted 2/16 - Received 3/30

Here are their predictions for Harper and Machado.

Bryce Harper - Predicted 14/420
Manny Machado - Predicted 13/390

Maybe Im way off, but it doesn't seem like the market is there for that. Yankees have said they have no intention of going over 300m for Manny and the Dodgers have said they're not going 10+ years for him. The only thing Ive heard from Harper is that he wants to set the new record (which would only be $325m+). Any chance these guys both sign way below these estimates or does someone eventually pony-up?

What are the chances these teams tell Harper and Machado to kick rocks?  Just seems ludicrous to sign someone to that kind of deal.

14 years?!?!?
Nobody is getting 14 years. Machado and Harper will both end up with 10 year deals IMO. I know baseball is shying away from those long term deals but I don't mind giving them to 2 26 year old superstars that are just hitting their prime and will be 36 when the contracts expire. How often do 26 year old stars become free agents? I wouldn't mind the Yankees signing Machado. Put him at SS while Didi is out then slide him to 3B when Didi returns and put Andujar at his best "position" DH or use him as trade bait for a top of the rotation arm at the trade deadline. No reason Stanton can't play LF.

Manny's arrival to his meeting with the Phillies was the most Philly thing ever. All that was missing was Santa Claus and batteries.

Guess which active MLB player just had an angioplasty. Its the obvious choice other than Bartolo Colon.

Rays closing their top deck (capacity now 26k) - I hadnt looked at it from this perspective, but this is definitely kind of crappy and limiting baseball's audience:

From Craig Calcaterra on Twitter

People may make Rays attendance jokes here, but that's only part of the story. This is in keeping with baseball's overall move to reduce the number of cheap seats in favor of premium seats, club sections and higher-revenue-generating gathering spots. Happening in all parks.

---

-- move all games to expensive cable TV packages;
-- prevent fans from streaming local games via blackout rules;
-- lower number of seats/increase price of tickets, parking and concessions dramatically;
-- wonder why only older, whiter, wealthy people watch baseball anymore
.
