2018 MLB Regular Season Thread! Current thread batting average: .420 (1 Viewer)

Why is Adam Jones not signed?  This seems pretty ridiculous.
Role may be a factor as well. He's not a CF anymore and didn't hit like a corner last year.

The Giants could use him but most other teams are set in the OF. He'll have to settle for a 1 yr deal and hope for a bounceback. It's probably not how Jones envisioned his career but at least he's out of Baltimore.

He can still play CF because he doesn't make mistakes and still has a CF arm.  His range is obviously fading but he can basically play all three OF positions (probably above average in LF), provide power, and he's a good clubhouse guy.  I would think contenders would be very interested.

I had mentioned it earlier in this thread I believe, but some players are just either overplaying their hand or else not interested in signing for below their worth.  The example I used previously was Jermaine Dye, who was coming off a year where he played 141 games, and had a 793 ops (102 OPS+) with 27 hr's and 81 rbis.  While not all-star caliber numbers he was still a solid middle of the lineup contributor for a team.  Jones last year he played 145 games 732 ops (102 OPS+) with 15 hr's and 63 rbis.  And while I'm too stupid to figure out how Jones's oWAR was twice as high as Dye's cause their numbers looked pretty damn similar to me, Dye was not given an offer he wanted and never played again.  Granted he was a few years older than Jones but still.  Market for 30+ replacement level outfielders is drying up.  Surprised Cutch was able to get something as lucrative as he was.

Below average defensively CF's with impatient approach's don't age well.  Before he was able to offset a low OBP with power, but that went over the cliff last year - and underlying data indicates it's probably legit.  That makes it even more problematic to move him out of center.  Steamer projects him for 266/307/430 and 0.9 WAR and I find it difficult to object.  If I'm a team then I'm not paying anything meaningful for that sort of player.  Since he's unsigned I'm sure his price is substantially higher than what teams have offered.  And given what he's been earning annually that makes sense.

According to Scott Boras Harper took Phillies longer offer with no Buyout and a no trade clause as he wanted his next team to be his last.

Of course he is going to say that...................whether or not it's true is another story.
It's kind of true for a lot of players. Some guys just hate the process and will only want to do it once. Don't want to keep moving their family. I know if I was in position I'd be telling my agent hey Its not just about the money here but I also rather not go through this again. I want my next contract my last and to stay around in a city who wants me and has a chance to win.

Sure, moving sucks for anybody.  I hate to move and most people like stability.  It's definitely an added benefit but I can guarantee that if it was allowed and some other team threw him $50M a year to change teams it would likely happen.  Contract value = Ego stroking for these players.  None of them need the bags of money they are getting but to be able to whip out your contract value in the ego battle is a huge thing for professional athletes.

And then sometimes it's not always about the money it's whats best for your family overall.

Harper said he chose #3 instead of 34 in respect to Halladay. No one should wear that Number again. Said he could've asked Phillies 3B Mikel Franco for & as Micky Mantle was Dad's favorite player growing up but didn't want to put that kind of Pressure on him. I agree with ken Rosenthal's comments on MLB Network after the PC. This was a great day for Baseball and the fans. The Fans finally got to see the Harper many of them in the media have grown to know and love. The Fans always saw the head on Fire passionate guy and yes he's the type of player you hate if he's not on your team and love if he is, but Harper showed he's a student of the game, well versed in the history of baseball and very smart individual as whole.

Yup I'm intrigued by how this will end up.  In the weeks leading up to the signing, it seems like most Philly fans were fairly anti-Harper.  The general sentiment seemed to be that he really didn't want to be in Philly.  So it seemed like most of the fanbase was fed up.  Much of what I heard on sports talk was "he's not even that good",  "I hope we don't pay that kind of money for a .240 hitter", "he never won anything for the Nationals even with all of that pitching", etc.

Now he's a hero.  So I guess it was a lot of sour grapes going on.

To me that's just the typical on no one will sign here. Some people were still triggered and upset when Lebron didn't sign with the 76ers during NBA FA and they didn't get any of the big names they were so desperately promised so they figured just typical for a GM of a team here to make these claims and then strikeout again. I also think Guys like Cataldi and Missinelli are a problem with this type of thinking too. Whenever I'm debating Philly sports and the person starts bringing up the trigger words Miss and Cataldi use I end the convo right there because theres no point In trying to reason with those people.

Also his analytic numbers aren't bad either. People also need to understand not all power hitters are .300 hitters it's a rare breed. Plus they completely dismiss OBP which Harpers for his career Is .385 or something. Schmidt's was .380 for his career. So even with a lower avg he still gets on base. For his career his OPS is 139 the league avg is 100. He's a .279 hitter for his career and his MVP year he had 134 Strikeouts but 124BBs as well. People will say he has poor defense. Most of that was he came up as a catcher and didn't play the OF till much later. Do you know how hard it is to catch Major leaguers and read how a ballpark plays at times? It's like the fans here when the Eagles went most of a season without a Punt Returner. One of the sports stations had a Punt Return completion. I think about 500-600 people showed up. Only one guy cleaning caught a punt it was a fair catch no return after it. This isn't your MLB The Show video game or your madden where you can put anyone anywhere and they'll be good. This is real life.

In fact both Madden and MLB The Show in recent yrs are putting that real life aspect in the game. For Madden say you play a 3-4 OLB as a 4-3 DE. He's not going to be as successful in that system and there's a purple diamond that tells you which guys fit your scheme. over time you can develop that guy into one of your system guys but it's a risk reward thing too. I think guys who aren't in the right system lose ratings just for that game played were a guy in the system might get a ratings boost per game. MLB The Show this year has a new AI defensive system. So for example say this was 08 and we're the Phillies with Pat Burrell in LF. Well you are like real life gonna want to replace him defensively for later innings. OFers now with poor reaction time or not great defense won't get good jumps and will take bad routes on balls. Same with INF players. Ryan Howard you might want to take out of the game or if you have him on an AL team you are better off DH the guy. I like these aspects they are implementing in these games because I think the stupidity some use comparing real life ad what they did in a video game or whatever is pretty terrible.

Harper's adjust OPS+ of 139 ranks him 7th among active players.  His batting average is irrelevant to me if his OBP is ~.400 and his slugging is ~.500.

Since Harper signed with the Phils, every other sentence out of his mouth has been related to recruiting Trout in the next 2 years.  Perhaps he should just focus on the current team and not worry about what happens 2 years from now.

After all, his current team is actually pretty damn good.

He doesn't even need to recruit Trout.  Trout actually helped recruit him to Philly.  Trout is a local guy who knows more about the area, the teams and the fans than Harper.  He's building a massive home in Millville.  His family is from the area, he comes back in the offseason to workout at the Phenom Factory.  If Trout doesn't sign an extension in Anaheim, I'm sure Philly will be at or near the top of his list of preferred destinations.  The Phillies have structured Harper's contract to allow them to back up a Brinks truck for Trout if/when the opportunity presents itself.  I'm pretty sure if they get the chance the Phillies won't get outbid for Trout.

I understand Trout’s history.  I still don’t see why Harper feels the need to comment about it so much when it’s still 2 years away.  He has a current team to focus on and so does Trout.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but the Angels have supposedly had internal dialogue about trading Trout.  Skaggs and Heaney are interesting potential breakout candidates, but if they don't...well, look behind them in the rotation.  This team could be in sell mode come July.  Again.  On the heels of three consecutive losing seasons.  This may not be about 2021...

He's just endearing himself to the phans/city. Making sure there's no leftover hard feelings from the contract negotiations. Local sports-talk is absolutely whipped up in a frenzy over this. Goal achieved.

But to Harper, it is about 2021 because he keeps saying "in 2 years".  Perhaps this is just a unique situation but I can't recall a situation where a superstar signed with a new team and immediately started publicly recruiting other players who were still a few years away from free agency.  As another poster mentioned, Trout is probably coming to Philly anyways because he wants to be there.  I don't think Harper needs to say anything publicly.

This puts public pressure on Trout to not sign an extension with Anaheim.

In reading about Tom Seaver these past couple of days, it shows there was a deep seated acrimony between him and Mets management that seemed to be more personal than financial. Any Mets homers have insight as to why?

The horrible 1977 trade with Cincinnati was made simply because they did not want him on the team anymore. They brought him back a few years later but let him go after one season as a compensation pick to the White Sox. His numbers weren't great, but they weren't awful and from a marketing/publicity  standpoint they knew he was approaching his 300th win--something he ended up doing with the White Sox, which was heavily promoted and celebrated.

They did retire his number in 1988, but otherwise he had very little association with the club in his post-playing days. I read that the only reason they hired him as a broadcaster was because they were embarrassed that he was doing games for the Yankees.

The whole thing seems odd and sad.

He can still play CF because he doesn't make mistakes and still has a CF arm.  His range is obviously fading but he can basically play all three OF positions (probably above average in LF), provide power, and he's a good clubhouse guy.  I would think contenders would be very interested.
Adam Jones to Arizona for 1/$3M.

Probably bad news for Ketel Marte.

Just grabbed Pete Alonso in my dynasty rookie / fa draft, that power has me all hot and bothered. OBP league instead of average too, soooo pretty excited.

MLB rule changes announced. Basically getting rid of lefty relief pitchers will make me like baseball less (lefties unite).

CHANGES EFFECTIVE IN 2019

Inning breaks: Subject to discussions with broadcast partners, inning breaks will be reduced from 2:05 to 2:00 in local games and from 2:25 to 2:00 in national games. The Commissioner’s Office retains the right to further reduce the breaks to 1:55 in local and national games for the start of the 2020 season.

Trade Deadline: The August waiver trade period will be eliminated. The July 31 Trade Deadline will be the only deadline. Players may still be placed and claimed on outright waivers after July 31, but trades will no longer be permitted after that date.

All-Star Game: Fan voting will be conducted in two rounds -- a “primary round” that mirrors the All-Star voting of old, followed in late June or early July by an “Election Day” in which the top three vote-getters at each position in each league during the primaries will be voted on by fans in a prescribed time period to determine the All-Star starters.

As far as the game itself is concerned, the 10th inning -- and all subsequent innings -- of All-Star Games that go into extra innings will begin with a runner on second base. A more detailed explanation of the All-Star changes can be found here.

Home Run Derby: Total player prize money for the Home Run Derby will be increased to $2.5 million. The winner of the Home Run Derby will receive $1 million.

Mound visits: The maximum number of mound visits per team will be reduced from six to five per game. MLB had instituted an initial mound-visit limitation prior to the 2018 season.

Additionally, MLB and the MLBPA will form a joint committee to study other potential rule changes.

CHANGES EFFECTIVE IN 2020

Active roster provisions: The roster size from Opening Day through Aug. 31 will increase from 25 to 26 (with the minimum number of active players rising from 24 to 25, and roster sizes for doubleheaders rising from 26 to 27).

The 40-man active roster for September will be eliminated. From Sept. 1 through the end of the regular season, all clubs will carry 28 players.

Furthermore, the number of pitchers a club can carry on the active roster will be capped at a certain number, to be decided by the aforementioned joint committee. To adhere to that rule, clubs will have to designate each of their players as either a pitcher or a position player prior to each player’s first day on the active roster for a given season. That designation cannot change for the remainder of the season. Position players will not be allowed to pitch except in the following scenarios:

• They are designated as a “Two-Way Player.” A player can only qualify for this designation if he accrues at least 20 Major League innings pitched and at least 20 Major League games started as a position player or designated hitter (with at least three plate appearances in each of those games) in either the current or the prior season.

• Extra innings.

• In any game in which his team is losing or winning by more than six runs when he enters as a pitcher.

Three-batter minimum for pitchers: Rule 5.10(g) will be amended to require that starting pitchers and relief pitchers must pitch to either a minimum of three batters or to the end of a half-inning, with exceptions for incapacitating injury or illness. This will effectively end the so-called “LOOGY” (left-handed one-out guy) and other specialist roles in which pitchers are brought in for one very specific matchup.

Injured list: The minimum time a player spends on the injured list will be increased back to 15 days from 10, and the minimum assignment period of pitchers who are optionally assigned to the minors will increase from 10 days to 15. MLB had reduced the minimum injured list period to 10 days prior to the 2017 season to reduce the incentive for teams to play shorthanded or for players having to play at less than full strength. However, teams manipulated the rule change to rotate relievers on and off their active rosters, thereby maintaining a full stash of rested arms, which resulted in more pitching changes.

I had no idea my old baseball board was running still their keeper league. I accidentally off loaded my yahoo fantasy app so I never got any status messages. Either way I was contacted through the groups facebook Football Keeper league group I was on the clock. #2 pick we can keep everyone but only allowed 23 players per roster. Drop someone if we are already at 23 and 2 rounds. With Kimbrel on N/A spot I have 2 open spots. Needed a catcher so I picked up Francisco Mejia from the Padres.

I hate a lot of those rules. Roster expansion in Sept was always fun for fans who's team sucked but had guys coming up from the minors. I hate getting rid of the lefty specialist as it decreases strategy similar to the talk about putting the DH in the NL. I do like roster size getting expanded overall for the season I'm ok with no waiver trade deadline. I think All star game should be voted on by the players themselves or players and coaches should have more weighted votes then the fans. Because fan voting you either have a bunch of fans of a team who got hot stuffing the ballot or we're seeing some senior player getting in that has no business in there like ARod and others were for awhile. I get it if the player announces he's retiring after the season so fans vote for them I get it like CC getting in this year since he's retiring after the season Zero problem. Cal Ripken in SEA All Star game or Jeter and MO. Certain fanbases in all sports will just stuff the ballot. I'm glad they took out winner get HFA in WS. That was a stupid rule.

I'm all for stuff to get the game moving faster especially mound visits by Catchers. Watching the WS with Phillies vs Yankees 9 and 8 yrs ago with Jorge Posada going to the mound every 5 pitches really destroyed game flow. The one game I think I counted him going to the mound over 20Plus times and that was one game. Like dude some of us need to go to bed at a decent time and you believe or not might even be disrupting your own pitchers flow with these visits. Chill with the mound visits. I understand trying to move the game faster getting rid of certain things but the lefty thing is not needed to get rid of. Get less commercial time, reduce mound visits by catchers and managers and reduce the delay of batters getting into the box. The Minute the Batter has 2 feet in the box I'm throwing pitches no matter if he's ready or not. You step in that box you are saying you are ready.

Not a fan of most of the rules changes.  I like going back to the 15 day IL/DL because clubs were gaming the system.  I can live with the new trade deadline and don't really care about the All-Star game.

I don't care for the three batter minimum or the reduced September rosters.

Manfred sucks.

Yeah he also wants to add a DH to the NL talk about boring The reason the DH was added to begin with was the American League wanted to gain fans and do something different.

True story:  The DH was to be implemented into the NL in the mid 70s, but the vote didn't pass because the Phillies  & Pirates owners were unreachable...on a fishing trip.

They didn't vote, so their weren't enough votes for the measure to pass.

PHILADELPHIA ####S EVERYTHING UP, ALL THE TIME.
Nice I'm glad because the DH sucks unless it's the All Star game. Hated it in little league because coaches use to use that as the argument of giving one of the kids "playing time". Playing time in our leagues always referred to player taking ABs and playing the field not just getting ABs.

Why stop the September roster expansion? Has to be financially motivated. Not a fan of 3 out minimum either.
