Doesn't even surprise me.  He's an impressive speaker with an NFL resume as a coach.  I can easily see kids wanting to play for him.
I’ll admit it... I thought that hire was going to be an absolute disaster. While I never questioned how passionate Herm was, I thought his persona was really cheesy. Not in a bad way, more like in a “he means well” way.

For that reason I didn’t think he’d really resonate with a bunch of 16-17 year old kids but clearly not the case.

100% agree.  Couldn't listen to him on tv or radio.  Too much preacher man, too many cliches, too much shtick.  Apparently it's real.  Trey Wingo was crying in Herm's send off on ESPN.  He's getting ASU to play.  I was wrong.

Then they'll change to dark and silver again under the lights. Very cool. Pretty sure they did these in the Rose Bowl years ago and looked great then too.

Rose Bowl is such a great setting.
I’ve been lucky enough to cheer on my Ducks at two National Championship games and five Rose Bowls now. Of course I’d rather (finally) win the championship, but ### #### is the Rose Bowl on Jan 1 the greatest setting in college football.

In related news, I think I’m almost over my hangover.

The Bama off-season saga continues with the dominoes falling the other way over the weekend.  As expected, Jeudy, Wills declared and Najee Harris is expected to.  But Xavier McKinney was rumored to be announcing a return on Friday, then flipped to announce he was leaving for the NFL today.

WR Henry Ruggs is now also rumored to follow that lead.  That leaves WR Devonta Smith and Tua...who is announcing his decision at a presser tomorrow at 12 PM EST with Saban.

Good decision on his part.  Get your money and get into the system of what ever team drafts you and start learning.  No more unnecessary wear and tear on your surgically repaired legs.

Did anyone actually think he was going back aside from optimistic Bama fans? I can’t think of a single reason that would have made sense outside of altruism.

It was really based on his health/draft forecast....which has been up in the air.  He got a great update from Drs on Friday to help everyone feel better about the draft.

I don’t really find this too surprising. Outside of the big bowl games, who’s going?  I doubt many are paying for travel, lodging, and tickets just to see their team play in Shrieveport or something like that.

Odd stats about Rhule.

Leaves Baylor having never coached a game where they beat a Top 25 team.

In entire career has had 19 tries and won 2, none ranked higher than 20.

How can you have 6 divisions and 12 championship games?
Sizes of schools vary alot.  As to why there are divisions, probably a political board topic.
Probably broken into 6 divisions based on school size, to create regions.  Then because of the disparity in sizes within the divisions, they are broken by size again for the playoffs.
South Carolina did this for a while, and it was stupid.  For state champions you had two 5A (biggest schools), two 4A, one 3A, two 2A and two 1A for a few years.  9 State title games.

The smaller schools in a division complain that they can't compete against the bigger schools in the same division, even though they are grouped based upon size.

There are regions and districts for geography.

ARRRRGHHHHHH!

I'm officially an excited State fan again.  Its been a few years.  He might be a bust, but for now its a great hire.

He won't bust out.  I promise you that.  I also promise you that he will win games he shouldn't, lose games he definitely shouldn't and will be appointment TV when he holds a press conference.  Saban will hate him if he doesn't already.  Kiffin vs Leach will be tremendous fun for all of us everywhere.

As for Washington State, I don't know what they do now.  He took a moribund program and made them relative and dangerous overnight.  I have no idea where they turn (haven't looked) but I think the Cougs become the closest thing to a bye again in the Pac12.  They were historically bad for a long time.  Absent Leach and his magic, I think they return there quickly.  Pullman is a disgusting, remote, crap-hole of a town.  GLLlllllll

@joereedy: ESPN needs to do a 30 for 30 on how Elijah Moore's end zone celebration has brought us Lane Kiffin and Mike Leach coaching in Mississippi.

But, why?  It's supposed to be a STATE championship. How can you have TWO class 6A state champions?
  Maybe because Texas is so big?   I would be curious as to how many state champions there are in other big states, say California.

eta - did some looking around on maxpreps.

Excluding 6, 8 and 9 man football, and what looked like private leagues, for the 50 states plus DC, it looks like a total of 350 State titles.

Ranging from 2 (Alaska, Delaware, DC) to 69 in California.  Looks like California breaks up into multiple regional areas and just has championships there.

Because there is a 6A DI and a 6A DII. It's basically just twelve different classes if you will, but they organize it 6A DI, 6A DII, 5A DI, 5A DII, etc. Within each class the teams are grouped by Region and then District, but each class will contain schools from all over the state based on size.

There probably came a time when 6 classifications based on size wasn't enough, but they thought 7A looks dumb or people were already too familiar with the 6 classes.

Any chance you can put this in a spreadsheet for me like you do with World Cup Qualification?
