2019 College football thread - It's 2020, yo. Go to the new thread. (1 Viewer)

Gameday was pretty damn cool.  Thought Beale would be packed the whole day, but when it ended at 11am CT, most of the folks scattered.
:goodposting: We got down there around 7am and it was pretty packed. Really glad we went. I think a lot of the people left at 11 and went straight to Tiger Lane to tailgate.

Worst time of the year is upon us.  We will now be consumed by arguments for why teams aren't where people think they should be in the playoff rankings starting today :wall:

That said, Heather Dinich did an interview of several of the college football coaches and I was surprised at how many DON'T want the playoff to expand.  Then, of course, Harbaugh had to Harbaugh and give his "If I were in charge, this is what I'd do" approach to a playoff which end up being 15 games for the entire year if you reach the final.

I'm not surprised. One thing coaches seem to be is reluctant to change. JMO.

@KirkHerbstreit

Just talked with Bob Stoops. Any reports that he’s a candidate for the FSU job are not accurate. Said “he’s not a candidate”.

Sooooooo ... press conference announcing Stoops tomorrow?

Was listening to the Bruce Feldman/Stewart Mandel podcast this morning and Bruce mentioned Mike Leach as a possibility. That would be fun.
I think Mike Leach is a good head coach.

I think Florida State would be a great program for a good head coach to work.

I think Mike Leach would be a terrible fit at Florida State.

Best response:

"Can't be a candidate when you already have the job." :D

I have a dream that Mike Leach will do a joint Press Conference with Nick Saban before the following 4 Iron Bowls.

Glad as hell I'm not going to the game this weekend with Trump screwing up the logistics of attending.

Still kind of pissed Tennessee didn't hire him.
Somebody down south will give him another shot, but it can't be a marquee school.  He's not fit for that.  He's a perfect fit in Lubbock or Pullman or Starkville.  I hope he never leaves the Pac12 because he makes the conference much more interesting, but somebody will come a callin.

Per Herbstreit.

Anybody who knows Willie Taggart knows what a gentleman and class act he is. I think he was almost set up to fail when you look at it, because of what he inherited. He is such a likable guy ... I think if you look at the end of the Jimbo Fisher that things started to go sideways — not as far as x’s and o’s but as far as kind of a 'me, me' individual approach to 'hey, you know what, we’re not winning games, but I’ve still got to go and get mine. I’ve still got to be able to take care of what I need to take care of.' I think that the program was very fractured ... This was a problem from the very outset of the start to his era, and something he inherited. He tried to change it and try different things, and it just didn’t work.

"It got to the point where that if you watched Florida State last year and this year, they’re not just losing games. It’s how they’re playing. You know, how undisciplined they’re playing … I just don’t think it was the right fit now that you look back at it as far as the kind of coach that Willie is, the kind of personality more importantly that he has, and what was going on at Florida State. It’s unfortunate .... (Florida State) has to clean the program up and get it back to players playing for each other and playing for that tradition and not just for themselves or just to get to the NFL. I think that’s where they’ve been the past few years."

Jimbo should be splitting his $70M with Jameis.  I'm so glad aTm paid him what they did.

Not sure I'd characterize Taggart as magnanimously as Herbstreit, but I don't know him know him.  He did Oregon dirty, but the Ducks are much better off for it.

He didn’t really do Oregon dirty. People leave jobs for what they perceive to be better jobs all the time. #### happens, especially in that business.

Almost everybody at FSU talked about how great of a guy he is, regardless of his lack of coaching acumen.

Other than lying to his team about leaving, taking the Oregon private plane for a 'recruiting trip' where he met with FSU officials to accept their job and flying back on the same plane where he was not forthcoming with his AD about his intentions, sure....great guy.  I get it, it's a must lie situation.  Saban did it too.

You can't fault Ducks' fans for being miffed at how it all played out, even if the guy was chasing his dream job.  It's no fun being used as a stepping stone.  But, in the end, Oregon is better off unquestionably.  We'll see how they look after Herbert rides off into the sunset.

I get why Oregon fans are irritated but other than the plane ride (forgot about that; that was low) that’s pretty SOP for these type of things.

Saban met with Huizenga for a heart to heart before accepting Bama...people get wrapped up in the aggressive media soundbite, but it sounds pretty different than this.

That Minn program seems like it has upside to me...surprising how big that school is.
I’m sure they do but I just read they haven’t faced a team’s first string qb since week 2. Definitely a big upgrade from where they were though.

Per The Athletic’s Zack Pierce, you have to go back to 1968 to find anything remotely similar to this matchup in Minneapolis, when No. 16 Minnesota hosted No. 2 USC in a season opener. The last time Minnesota was 8-0 and facing an undefeated team? That would be 1903.

What a great time to be a HC in CFB.  Raises every year. Big time buyouts. Just a hint of school A is interested in a coach from school B causes boosters and big time money to start flowing.

Mike Shula is a really nice guy too, but he was completely incompetent as a head coach of a major football program. I was happy as can be driving out of Tuscaloosa after losing to Auburn in '06... before talks began about retaining him. Thankfully he told Mal Moore that once again he wouldn't be firing anyone on his staff.

His teams were also undisciplined both on and off the field.

Clemson opens at #5.  Dabo has to be pretty fired up about that.  Could be the best thing for his team to feel disrespected.

Ohio St being #1 right now was the easy pick.  Then next week the LSU/Alabama winner will be #1 anyway.  So stupid.

I have no problem with OSU being #1.  They look awesome, but if it's about resume, why are they #1?  I know it doesn't matter one bit, but it's a little inconsistent.

Seems pretty clear that the CFP guys are just pumping up the TV ratings, but is that really a bad thing?

I feel like Bill Murry in "Meatballs"....It just doesn't matter....it just doesn't matter!

Lotta football left to be played.  Nobody will care about this week's ranking in a month.

Don't have much of a comparison.  Only to Friday night.  Seemed about the same to me.
I feel ya!  Most folks I know were laying low Friday in prep for 5-6am show times for Saturday.

Honestly Beale Street generally sucks. It’s like going to Bourbon St when you’re in NOLA. I might hit Beale once or twice a year.

I generally strongly advise folks to branch outward unless you’re looking for the “drink overpriced sugary drinks out of an obnoxious container with a bunch of other tourists” Type off vacation... which is clearly not unpopular given places like Beale and Bourbon exist. :)

I really hope you guys found some fun pockets while here. If not, come back sometime and let me drag ya around...

While I absolutely love and am ecstatic to see PSU at #4, it's all for hype.  The rankings don't mean anything at this point.  I think the committee was looking ahead a few weeks to the Penn State-Ohio State game, so they could market it as a matchup between two playoff teams.

If you're a black helicopter/ conspiracy theorist sports fan....

SEC bigwigs will really want a Bama win Saturday because a 1 loss LSU has a much better resume to get #4 spot than a 1 loss Bama team.

I'm OK with it too. Let's face it, there's a better than even chance both teams will be undefeated at 10-0 and ranked in the playoff poll as semi-finalists.  ABC makes it a night game at the Horse crap, and the game sells itself.

Have no problem with the rankings.  Plenty of time and games left for it to shake out.  I do think that Bama needs to win this weekend at home.  A loss there will likely knock them out of the SEC title game and I don't think they'll be able to get in with 1 loss and without a conference championship like in 2017 (or whatever recent year that was).

A seemingly resurgent Michigan team makes the OSU/Michigan game interesting again.  In Ann Arbor this year, IIRC.

Penn St. better not sleep on Minn while looking down the road to OSU.

Wake Forest at #19.  Guess that is some decent news for Clemson.  Right now #5 is a very good spot to be in, imo.  Going to be tough for UGA but if they can beat an undefeated LSU or Bama in the SEC title game, they'd have a good argument.

Whoever wins the Oregon/Utah game probably needs to do it convincingly.

Been saying that about Bama. LSU gets in with 1 loss. Bama would need help.

No way PSU is looking past Minnesota. I do worry about Indiana next week leading in to OSU though. That's a total trap game against a pretty good team.

Eh. A lot has to happen for this:

1. the loss to bama is close. Another 29-0 drubbing and no way.

2. Undefeated Alabama beats UGA in the SEC champ game.

3. the fourth spot comes down to one loss LSU and one loss PAC 12 champ, Utah. I dont see taking LSU at 4 over one loss Oklahoma or Oregon.

One loss LSU is an easy #4 over OU and Oregon, unless the Bama loss is a drubbing.

I'm resigned to the fact that the Pac12 won't send anybody to the final four and that's fine.  Utah or Oregon in the Rose Bowl against either PSU or OSU would be fine with me and a great game.

What sort of chaos would ensue if Bama beats LSU but loses to Auburn in the Iron Bowl?  Who then represents the SEC West in that scenario?

Doomsday scenario.

The B12 seems to be the only one definitely out if UO and Utah win out to Champ game, after last night.

Whoops! Per Fox Sports, this will be a noon kick.
